Our Queen

I have been listening to a radio prog about whether or not the Queen should give up the throne to Charles as she is starting to have health issues. The thought struck me has she started showing signs of dementia at 95 years old. Its not long since she lost her beloved husband and like in many marriages if this illness starts the other person covers for them in many ways. Now its about 6 months since his death are they more apparent and she is no longer able to hide it and the family are concerned about her. I hope and pray she is really suffering only with back pain but i have a niggly feeling it may be more than the palace is disclosing. I truely hope i am wrong. God bless her.

She does still ride regularly. It was just a few days ago that she was reported to have been seen riding at Windsor. A good way of keeping fit, getting fresh air and being with the horses she loves, back permitting !

Don't think our Queen has dementia. At the age of 95 it is not surprising she has health issues. Whatever she is dealing with she is entitled to privacy.

What is this new thing that people can just say anything they like with no evidence. I think the Queen has hurt her back whilst trampolining, I have no evidence for this but it's what I believe.

I think you could be right Galaxy grin

I believe she was caught paragliding in her helicopter when she went to Sandringham recently followed by a parachute jump over Windsor on her return.

I only caught a bit of GM tv today (don’t usually watch it at all). There was a newspaper editor called Kevin who pronounced the Queen not fit for purpose (or words to that effect) as she was no longer able to carry out the duties of her job as pledged. I’m not a great Royalist, although fond of HM but found his blunt, arrogant attitude quite shocking.

sodapop Mon 15-Nov-21 18:45:05

We could say the same of some newspaper editors Georgesgran and they are nowhere near the age of the Queen. I found that shocking as well.

Why has no one suggested hip problems which I would imagine would explain the scan and walking stick. She is doing remarkably well for her age.

A little bird told me that it was one of the Corgis that caused HM to fall off her electric scooter, by running into her path. Luckily, she landed on the Corgi, and just hurt her back - it could have been worse! She was wearing a helmet, too, unlike when she goes horse riding.

Didn’t Andrew give her the corgis after her old one died?

Maybe not one of his best decisions….along with a few others ?

merlotgran Mon 15-Nov-21 19:21:02

Does anyone know if the corgi’s OK?

That’s strange, I read that she has had to give up riding.

He’s fine! His back is a bit sore, too, but he’s sharing the Queen’s horse liniment and they’re both getting on very well with it.

The. Queen doesn’t have to do anything to be Queen she just has to exist. So whether she’s got a bad back or any number of other ailments we won’t be informed. Her “duties” can easily be done by stand ins and are increasingly being done by them. She won’t hand over the title till she drops off the perch.

Lincslass Tue 16-Nov-21 07:40:55

Again nasty remarks about our elderly Queen, who has given a lifetime of service to this country, she took her vows seriously and is loved by many as our Monarch. Shame on those who think it’s fine to mock her in her final years.

Well said sodapop . Is there noone exempt from the vitriol
of the media? I find Kevin Maguire an odious man.

A high percentage of people get back trouble from time to time - and our Queen is clearly one of them.

BlueBelle Tue 16-Nov-21 07:52:01

She gave up riding a few months back Germanshepherd due to discomfort

JaneJudge Tue 16-Nov-21 07:53:23

I don't understand why people think ill or disabled people have to give up horse riding. It is not applicable to the Queen as she has her own ponies but there is a whole charity organisation called RDA, riding for the disabled, that helps even profoundly physically disabled people access horse riding. It is good for you, even if you have a bad back. Princess Anne used to be patron.

Anniebach Tue 16-Nov-21 07:56:04

Even the press doesn’t refer to anyone’s death as dropping off their perch.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-Nov-21 07:59:16

I thought that was only temporary BlueBelle.

BlueBelle Tue 16-Nov-21 08:12:07

Well she hasn’t ridden for the last three months and I doubt she’ll be riding with a bad back so I m thinking not germanshepherd

I didn't see GMB yesterday and I don't know anything about Maguire. However the reports this morning said that he said the Queen can no longer do the job she is meant to. I rather agree with him.

In the last few weeks she has pulled out of visits to NI and Glasgow, and now the Remembrance Day event. She may well be still doing her boxes. I don't believe for a minute she has dementia, she has seemed very mentally sharp over the last few weeks.

But there are obligations on our Head of State. There are things that only the HoS can do, no matter how much her son and grandson step up to the plate, there are things that need her signature or her presence.

All the righteous anger about how she can stay as long as she likes? Well there are constitutional implications of that. What would be wrong with having a Regent? Demonizing people who ask that wouldn't be the behaviour of a constitutional democracy, asking that must be allowed.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-Nov-21 09:13:25

I think Kevin Maguire was once the editor of The Sun? A nasty piece of work if it’s the man I’m thinking of.

Certain things are constitutionally required of the monarch such as giving the Royal Assent to statutes, but documents are brought to her for signature amongst the red boxes which she attends to daily, wherever she is.

It has been proved during the lockdowns that her physical presence is not essential to undertaking her role, much as people probably like to see her. A possible exception might be the opening of Parliament but I really don’t know if her physical presence then, as opposed to via video link, is constitutionally necessary. Doubtless someone will consult Prof Google.

A regent would I believe only be required if her mental faculties were to fail, but from what I’ve read and seen (for instance her message to COP26) I don’t see that happening any time soon.

Lucca Tue 16-Nov-21 09:16:32

Wasn’t that Kelvin Mackenzie ? (Oops there I go again being the fount of all knowledge..sorry GSM!). And he was indeed a piece of work .

Alegrias1 Tue 16-Nov-21 09:37:39

Mea culpa... I googled.

Unlike any of the preceding Regency Acts, the Regency Act 1937 (which is still in force) established in law a procedure for determining the incapacity of the sovereign due to infirmity of mind or body or due to the monarch's unavailability for another definite cause.

Now I'm heading off before the pitchforks-bearers arrive.

Anniebach Tue 16-Nov-21 09:40:58

The Queen didn’t attend the opening of Parliament when she was pregnant

notgran Tue 16-Nov-21 09:51:44

I adore the Queen and as such love all the pomp and ceremony. I think it's because she has always been there all my/our life. I do wonder though when the inevitable happens if I will feel the same about the Royal Family then. Charles, who I have of course never met is a strange character, Princess Anne, who I have met a couple of times (proud boast) seems lovely and knows exactly what her role is and how to fulfil it. It would be a boost to the country imho if/when Prince William becomes King as he seems to be intelligent and level headed. So what I think I'm saying is God Save the Queen! flowers
