Been discussed before, I know, but in the DT today, it seems that support for this to be the Duchess of Cornwall’s title in the fullness of time is ever more likely.

I, for one, would be pleased to see this happen. Princess Consort would be a silly title for the wife of the King.

I have never thought Charles will allow his beloved wife to hold an inferior title.

Sparklefizz

Was surprised to see that this thread was still active today so have just come on to take a look, only to find that Diana is still being slagged off by the usual suspects who are raking up the same old stories.

Can't she just be left to rest in peace? (I think I posted that on p.2 or 3)

Clearly not sparklefizz!. I find it weird obsessive and distasteful to constantly go on about all Diana’s faults …

I avoided the thread because I knew Diana would be criticised again. Just looked at last few pages.
I simply do not understand the obsessive need by the usual suspect to keep doing this in such an unpleasant manner. It is so distasteful.

Sources say Prince William is pragmatic about Camilla's role in his father's life and the future of the monarchy
There were huge family rows in the early stages of Charles and Camilla's marriage as everyone found their feet. William didn't have the best relationship with his father back then.

Diana’s death was not important to the whole country. Many people were upset whether they liked her or not, because of the fact that she died. That’s natural, but not important to the country. Many people were just as horrified by the fact that she was with Dodi Fayed as they were by her death. Commentaries in France, where I was at the time also mentioned how shocked the British people were by the fact that Diana was with Mr Fayed.
She’s dead. if you think she have would have denied either herself or PC the right to future happiness, it paints a different picture.

It's a long time ago now but I honestly don't recall any horror at Diana being with Dodi Al Fayed. They had only been together a few weeks and I think most people assumed she was just having a dalliance with a rich playboy. There was probably a bit of eye rolling as public opinion was beginning to turn against her, but he was just viewed as another unsuitable boyfriend who she probably wasn't serious about.

Yes, it is believed (by me wink) that Diana was heartbroken about the end of her relationship with Hasnat Kahn.

Prince Philip was offered the title of Prince Consort, but he refused as he didn't wish to be compared to Prince Albert, who it was said, influenced Queen Victoria to the point of running affairs of state through her, making him quite unpopular, and her ineffectual. I certainly don't remember any adverse comments or feelings about Dodi. Nobody I knew mentioned it one way or the other, why would we? it simply wasn't an issue.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 08-Feb-22 09:21:10

I remember the conspiracy theorists suggesting that Diana had been disposed of because it was feared that she might have children by Dodi who would be Muslims. Also his father was a very controversial character who had, it was said, done all he could to foster the relationship. Don’t remember criticism of her relationship with Hasnat Khan though. Perhaps because he was a surgeon and his father wasn’t Mohammed Al Fayed.

FannyCornforth Tue 08-Feb-22 09:41:49

Her relationship with Kahn was kept very quiet.
Obviously Dodi wanted to go the other way and have their relationship as high profile as possible.
You couldn’t get a good story about Kahn and Diana having a cuddle in front of Friends

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 08-Feb-22 09:47:47

The Al Fayeds were all about publicity weren’t they?

Ali08 Tue 08-Feb-22 10:01:50

Well, according to what I've read lately, Camilla is to be Queen if Charles ever does get to be King!

I don't recall knowing anything about Diana's relationships until after her death, other than Dodi Al-fayed, and thinking she had cheapened herself in associating with him, and that she was doing it to provoke the royal family.

Beswitched Tue 08-Feb-22 11:09:19

I think the fact that she died whilst having a fling with Dodi Al Fayed has created a strong association between them that just wouldn't have existed otherwise. If the car accident hadn't happened I've little doubt the affair would have fizzled out by the Autumn and most people wouldn't even remember his name by now.

But because they died tragically and while together people blew up their relationship to be something it never was. Chiefly Dodi' s father who has turned it into this great love story, an engagement soon to come etc
And some people have bought into that re-imagined narrative.

MissAdventure Tue 08-Feb-22 11:15:31

I read the book by the bodyguard who survived the crash, and he stated that Dodi was a childish, spoilt, man-child. (In a more polite way)
His stock phrase when thwarted was "My dad said I can"...

Anniebach Tue 08-Feb-22 11:50:55

Fact - Hasnat Khan wrote a written statement for the enquiry of Diana’s death

‘They had been in a relationship from 1995 to June 1997, they
talked of getting married but he believed he would find the media attention hell, he ended the relationship’.

FannyCornforth Tue 08-Feb-22 11:54:43

Thank you Annie
I remember that. What an honourable man

MissAdventure Tue 08-Feb-22 11:58:06

Just think, if he and Diana had married...
I wonder how very different things would be now.

Beswitched Tue 08-Feb-22 12:43:38

Yes they do seem to have been genuinely in love. And he certainly didn't regard her as some kind of trophy or prize. They kept their relationship very private.

If she had never met Charles I wonder if she would have ended up with him or someone like him. A decent stable man with a worthwhile job, who loved her for herself. Her life could have been so different if she had received better advice early on.

Charles should have been a short lived teenage crush in her life, not the ruination of it.

Anniebach Tue 08-Feb-22 13:26:28

She was with James Gilby before Charles

MissAdventure Tue 08-Feb-22 13:28:43

Good for her. smile

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 08-Feb-22 13:30:00

Mmm, so naive. Just as my shooting friend says.

Anniebach Tue 08-Feb-22 13:31:48

Yes, and he still loved her when they made the squidgy tape,
could have been so different if she had stayed with him

MissAdventure Tue 08-Feb-22 13:33:03

Why should she be naive?
Was that on Charles' remit for a potential wife?
He seems to prefer those with a few miles on the clock, I'd say.

Anniebach Tue 08-Feb-22 13:35:36

Yes you would say , so the ‘must be a virgin wife ?
