Just discovered I'm a Mif! (lighthearted thread)

While enjoying a novel which evidenced British class distinction (mentioned under Books thread today), I was amazed and amused to find I'm a Mif "which is absolutely not done!".

This means Milk in first.

I'd never realized there was any snobbery attached. In fact, had read that the choice of when to put the milk into tea depended on whether or not delicate porcelain cups are being used. If so, it is sensible to start with the milk to prevent the risk of boiling tea cracking the cup.

I don't use porcelain cups and have always started with the milk and do not intend changing.

How about you? I DID say this is a lighthearted thread!

Sorry, that was 5 letters.
I do Wordle as well!

Bizarrely I put milk in last at home and milk in first if I’m out.
I have no explanation as to why.

I went off milk in tea when I was pregnant with DD1 36 years ago. Never got the taste back so always black. Also went off coffee but once she popped out I enjoyed it again.

Milk after the teabag has had time to stew for a bit.
My girl used to leave the teabag in whilst she drank her tea. smile

Thank you. She is very, very missed, lately.

But she was pernickity about her tea; listening in case you took the teabag out too soon.

Milk ruins a good cup of tea or coffee. I gave it up 54 years ago when living in a country that only had long life or sterilised milk.

Maggiemaybe Fri 13-May-22 09:36:09

Tif for me (or is it Mil?). DH is of the Mif persuasion, so one has to turn a blind eye, if one ever expects to get a cup of tea made.

BlueSky Fri 13-May-22 09:52:09

I’m sure she is MissA flowers
I’ve been known to leave my tea bag in as tea was never strong enough for me. Now I like a paler cuppa, but coffee is still strong and black! cafe

Whether it's our usual loose tea or teabags all tea is made in a teapot so always milk first. I've read that milk last scalds the milk which is why it will taste different Gin.

Never heard that before. Interesting!

MissAdventure Fri 13-May-22 09:55:25

I've gone the other way: tea strong enough to stand a spoon in, but coffee kind of weakish.
It might be because I am trying to cut down my sugar, but I find coffee bitter lately.

I hadn’t got my glasses on and quickly read the title thought it was MILF and decided this is a bit of a racy thread! Rather reminiscent of mumsnet

MIF here, always. I sometimes do use porcelain cups (vintage not posh). One of my lovely Welsh grandfathers taught me how to make a pot of tea, therefore a cup.
Apparently I was a dab hand!

20 0dd yearsago my daughter brought a new boyfriend home ,he put 6 spoonsful of sugar in his mug then a teabag and milk before the boiling water.....he left the bag in until the tea had all been drunk. It turned my stomach.Thankfully he didn't last long

I had boyfriend who would three quarters fill a mug with Horlicks powder, top it up with hot milk and eat it with a spoon ?
He didn’t last long either! ?

BlueBalou Fri 13-May-22 12:04:51

Mif here too, I drink my tea very, very weak ?

icanhandthemback Fri 13-May-22 12:24:11

I'm definitely a MIL. How do you know how much milk to put on until you see the strength of your tea? I hate it milky so I want to know the spoon would stand up in the cup before I put in more than a drop of milk.

grandMattie Fri 13-May-22 12:31:33

Gracious, no! Definitely a MIL!
My family, especially my parents and grandparents, would turn in their graves if I was a MIF. Not just that - but one never stirs one’s drink, one gently mixes it with genteel sideways move, ents! ?

Juno56 Fri 13-May-22 12:45:02

I have always been a TIF, as is (apparently) HM the Queen. Good enough for me ?.

Grantanow Fri 13-May-22 12:48:36

A teabag!? (with apologies to Lady Bracknell)

Yes I was taught this too grandMattie a gentle sideways movement, the spoon never ever touching the sides of the cup ?.

It's Mil for me too but it's almost always teabag in a china mug and I compost the tea leaves (not the bags) which I couldn't do with Mif.
I know some teabags are now compostable but i've no idea how long that would take and had previous experience of putting compostable bags into my compost and finding bits of them for ages . Easier to just open the bags up and use the tealeaves.

I'm a YNM - Yeugh no milk!!

I'm a YNM - Yeugh no milk!!

I'm a YNM as well, as are all the family all my neighbours as a child were too. It's a hangover from when men took cold tea down the mines. The mines were warm and soured the milk so it was always drunk black but with loads of sugar.

Musicgirl Fri 13-May-22 14:06:56

Another Mif here, too. I prefer tea made in a pot and sometimes treat myself to loose leaf tea but do have the bag in a (china) mug regularly. Mil for coffee and Css (can’t stand sugar) in both.

Madashell Fri 13-May-22 14:12:25

I love the ritual of making a cup of tea. Loose leaf tea from a tea merchant, a small Chinese clay teapot, warm the pot and the leaves, just of the boil water, cover with my home knitted cosy and leave to brew for recommended time. Pour into fine porcelain mug using a tea strainer - perfect!

Now milk or not? Darjeeling without, Assam with?

The worst tea I have ever had was scalding brown liquid in a bucket from a service station. A very sore tongue and the muck down the drain!
