I am bemused by the amount of times GNetters seem to “report” other members for things which are frankly none of their business. I guess they were school snitches …
The result is the loss of longstanding members of GN through either suspension or their resignation (often due to some perceived “ganging up” aka. Disagreeing with other posters. )
Well done !
Still none the wiser.What happened?
It is immaterial which thread is apparently responsible; it is the content of the posts which is important.
What does matter is that a group of posters were repeatedly breaking guideline on 'mean-spiritedness, ganging-up behaviour and rehashing old arguments.'
Those posters have been suspended, not banned, as is being alleged, and will be allowed to return if they agree to follow Gransnet guidelines.

I looked back at the OP of this discussion to check what it's all about.
Lucca, MichaelGransnet has explained that, recently, there was evidence of repeated nastiness from some posters - not just disagreeing.
It doesn't matter if they were a 'gang' or not - it was happening.
Are you saying that those on the receiving end, or seeing it, should not have reported?
For info: I have no idea what thread or threads were involved in any of this, and it's years since I reported anyone.

I've reported bullying or racist/xenophobic (or very offensive) stuff tbh. I don't care who it is and I don't care if that makes me snitch
Great attitude. I agree with it.
I don't agree. As I said before, let the conversation keep going so people can make up their own minds. It isn't up to any of us to decide what is acceptable and what is not. I never report unpleasant people because I want their comments to be seen so they will show their true colours.
Are you saying that those on the receiving end, or seeing it, should not have reported?
I’m saying they should come on the thread snd say what they don’t like rather than going straight to gnhq
Perhaps they had tangled with these posters before and knew any direct confrontation would turn nasty.
I know there are one or two posters that I avoid getting into any kind of argument with, because they just can't take any kind of criticism and become very nasty and vicious.
A bit like knowing there are certain neighbours you can't reason qith so going straight to the landlord/council.

I once had a neighbour like that. My (then) LL said "I dont like tittle tattles" and put the phone down on her.
That made life easier for the landlord.
Hi, Callistemon21 I've had a trawl through several threads and can see that some people have a much more direct approach than others and indeed I have seen that some posts seem to be bordering on what some people might find to be a too aggressive tone. Including some on this thread. But of course I cannot see those that have been removed following reporting.......which would have been useful to see as examples of what is deemed to be unacceptable. To answer your question, if I saw anything that was truly awful then yes I would probably report it however I believe that the system needs to be reviewed and changed so that if a post is deemed to be unacceptable by GNHQ then action should be taken against the poster, but the offending post should remain visible as an example so that everyone can learn to improve over time. Maybe GN isn't actually suitable for everyone all of the time, just the same as sometimes we have face to face spats with our closest friends and families and we have to find a way of handling those too. We probably can't always walk away from close friends or family, but we all have the ability to walk away from GN even for a short period if we don't like the tone. It seems that we have several options available for dealing with undesirable behaviour on GN and so we should make our choices and then get on with our lives.
A bad landlord by the sounds of it.
I was suspended recently and have been on the norty step. It’s nice to be back. It was a shock to be put on it to be honest. It’s certainly been an education.
Welcome back Urmstongran
Good to see you back Urms
I joined GN in 2019 I know of 2 threads that where deleted by GNHQ. I won't say which forums as it will validate the bullies.
As in life the minority spoil it for the majority. My daughter says they aren't real people. But you can soon spot those as they post once and disappear.
I know how much help, advice ,support and friendship I have found on GN. As I have said I do report posters who go to far and will continue to do so. Any form of bullying and abuse is not acceptable in real life so why do some think it is acceptable on line while they can hide behind their username.
I was bullied enough when I was at school adult bullying is inexcusable.
Hello urmston, good to see you back. I can’t recall us ever agreeing on news and politics. I was very cross and said so, in response to some of your comments on refugees.
I didn’t see what led to your suspension.
Sometimes the report button must be very hot.
I did wonder where you had gone Urmstongran, I didn't know you had been sent to the norty step again! Our politics couldn't be more opposite, but it's good to see you back.
Just reread my post and want to add, I didn’t report you urmston, I disagreed strongly and said so on the thread. Very few posts need deleting imo.

Pretty irresponsible.
Lucca: I’m saying they should come on the thread and say what they don’t like rather than going straight to gnhq.
To repeat MichaelGransnet again:
If you have any concerns about a post or poster then please do report to GNHQ rather than airing them on the boards. We're always fine to take a look behind the scenes
These are the rules we sign up to when we join.
We may disagree with them but it is no-one's place to criticize posters for choosing to follow them.
We do not know who reports what or when; some posters may already have said what they don't like on a thread and consequently been the recipient of the mean-spirited ganging-up; some have even left as a direct result. This behaviour has been quite rightly identified, investigated and sanctioned.
Because of this thread members have become aware of the unpleasant behaviour of a few posters on threads they don't normally follow.

I used to belong to a forum where if someone posted something rude or offensive, a moderator would quote the post with the instruction 'vintagejazz, do not post on this thread again'.
If a poster was banned the word appeared under their username anywhere it had appeared in previous threads.
And yes, sometimes taking a short break from Gransnet if it's getting you down can be advisable. It can be easy to get too caught up in it and lose perspective.

Good to see you Urmstongran
.
I never thought you did Iam64 ?
In fact I don’t think anyone did. No comment of mine was deleted. No warning given.
I’ve learnt a lot this past week.
I agree with GNHQ that they have the right to moderate as they see fit and I’m more than happy to comply with their guidelines.
It IS nice to be back! I’ve missed you ALL (in one way or another - even the N&P threads!)
