It's 09.30 and my thoughts are turning to lunch.

Jazz dance class later so will have my usual smoked salmon and scrambled eggs - something light to keep me light on my toes!

No idea about tonight... maybe salad, something from the freezer, odds & sods from fridge, who knows smile

Lunch was cottage cheese and tomato sandwich on brown bread. Dinner will be salmon, salad and new potatoes.

I wonder why some posters feel the need to come onto threads such as this to lecture others? We all have to eat, and it’s a bit of harmless fun to say what you might be having - also gives a bit of inspiration to me when I’m not sure what to have.

I think we are all well aware of the difficulties faced by so many, it doesn’t mean that we can’t have a thread like this.

Surely the more knowledgeable we are about food AlisonKF the better informed we will be about preparing good nutritious meals from a variety of inexpensive ingredients. It's not showing off or disgusting.

Mapleleaf Sun 17-Jul-22 15:28:25

Oh, and having this thread does not mean that we don’t care about the millions suffering poverty, either. So canter away on your high horse, Alison, if this thread upsets you so much.

Lunch for me is always the same so salad with egg, tomatoes, cucumber, spinach, chicken/ham and cheese.

Later tonight it will be chicken korma and rice. Goodness knows what time probably about 9 when hopefully it's cooler.

AlisonK I don't understand why you think this post is all about 'comfortably-off, smug people'. I would say that at least half of those who have replied are having salad with various accompaniments - from boiled eggs to salmon, and several who are having salad are picking it from their gardens. Salad with 'something' doesn't sound overly luxurious to me. And I notice you haven't come back to answer those (including me) who thought your post was very much unnecessarily rude and nasty.

Cereal for breakfast, don't av lunch, probably fish and chips for tea.

Lunch for me was a cucumber sandwich, I don’t think dh has had his yet!
Dinner, cold roast chicken (cooked in advance yesterday) baked potatoes (14 mins in microwave) and salad.

Minimum faff, but I might just exert myself to mix some mayonnaise with curry powder, mango chutney and lemon juice, as a sort of dip, to liven up the chicken.

I’m on my own here … as usual I did a roast Sunday lunch! My friend and we have done this ever since we were left on our own …. Unless there are family invites. I admit my part of the country is not nearly as hot as elsewhere, but a nice cold lager before and a chilled wine with, is just the ticket!

Lunch was lentil soup with oat cake and cheese. Evening meal, cottage pie made with mince, onion, mushroom and mixed bean base, a layer of sliced sweet potato and topped with mashed potato, accompanied by curry and coconut flavoured cauliflower. Dessert - leftover Christmas cherry trifle from the freezer.
No heatwave in N.E Scotland, just quite warm.

A bowl of muesli for lunch. Dinner will be chicken in a pesto and cream sauce with spaghetti and the remains of a biscuit and strawberry cake for dessert.

Happysexagenarian Sun 17-Jul-22 16:39:47

Lunch was hot cross buns, dinner will be chicken and....... something ?????

AlisonKF

I assume all readers of GN are comfortably off. None mention their gratitude at being able to afford to eat well and healthily at a cost unaffordable by millions. There is a note of self satisfaction at being so knowledgeable about food. Rather disgusting, really.

AlisonKF You are one nasty little (or old) cow! And I don't care if that gets me thrown off GNet. You obviously don't know the other GNers here or read their comments and posts often. If you did you would know there is HUGE concern for anyone struggling with food bills or any bills. Lets face it we're all in the same boat! And more importantly there is moral support and often advice from GNers. I see no hint of self satisfaction in the responses, people are simply stating what is on their menus for today.

Lunch was quiche and salad and for tea it’ll be cheese and tomato toasties followed by rhubarb and summer berry crumble and ice-cream.

GrammarGrandma Sun 17-Jul-22 17:20:57

Sweet potato wraps today for lunch, containing hard-boiled eggs and avocado chopped up, lettuce, rocket, cucumber, radishes and cherry tomatoes.

Dinner will be mushroom biryani with a veg curry and some dhal I made yesterday. All home-made. Sunday night is curry night no matter the weather. (My husband is half-Indian).

Thank you all, I enjoy threads like this as it gives me more ideas. Living on my own, although not dining on ready meals, there is a sameness so it is good to get inspiration.

You would not like to dine here because on an extra hot night and I am not feeling hungry it may well be a bowl of cereal- that is until I saw the last price of my favourite, just under a fiver. It will be staying on the shelf. Sorry, I digress.

I'm in the covid sick-bay at present so food is a bit haphazard. Lunch was beans on toast and a couple of satsumas. Tonight DH has decided to do something with chicken breasts, peppers, onions and tinned tomatoes.
I'm not feeling too good but it doesn't seem to have affected my appetite.

Happysexagenarian Sun 17-Jul-22 18:14:07

All this talk of food is making me feel hungry, and I can smell the chicken cooking, and now DH is dishing up roastchicken
Bon Appetit everyone! wine

When there is very little, I make potato fritters or onion fritters.
Flour, salt and water then dip in potato or onion sliced and deep fried. If it’s for a pudding I’d replace the salt with sugar and dip in apple thinly sliced or banana then deep fry.
Very cheap, filling but not too healthy.

Went out for lunch to restaurant by the river. Had coley with herb crust crushed new potatoes and samphire. Yummy.

Then on way home stopped in a village hall for tea and coffee cake

I’m not starting the diabetic dieting lark until doc says I have to !have made some veg soup for dinner

I had to go to Waitrose to collect a jl parcel so bought a cooked chicken, cold meat and some coleslaw sort of things. I do not intend cooking till at least Wednesday.

Also today I delivered stuff to the local church who distribute food to people in need in our village.

I am aware that we have more money than lots of people but I am also aware that lots of people have other disadvantages and I try to help there.

Snidey, sour people are not needed here.

Charleygirl5 Sun 17-Jul-22 18:43:07

kittylester I agree. When I was at Waitrose yesterday instead of popping tins of food in the food bin I added deodorants, toothpaste, liquid and bars of soap as well as toothbrushes because these are items which some folk cannot afford as food comes first. To me they are all essential.

I’ve had a day shampooing carpets so lunch was oatcakes with cheese and tomato. Teatime was 2 poached eggs on toast, ? followed by a mini choc ice lolly. It’s hot in my wee corner of Scotland.
