Well thank goodness this new PM debacle is over.. just have to see if what is promised is delivered and hope we all get the support we need?

Nanny27 Tue 06-Sept-22 14:10:35

How depressing Gransnet is becoming. No-one on here knows how she will perform as a PM. She hasn't had the chance yet. She may be great she may be awful but condemning someone outright without any evidence is not only unfair but narrow minded.

polly123 Tue 06-Sept-22 14:13:29

I can't believe anyone could vote for her! She will make a complete mess of everything. I can't look at her for very long as she seems to have a permanent smirk on her face.

Yes, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

She wouldn't have been my choice but we should reserve judgement.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 14:16:37

Quite simply, her manner doesn’t inspire confidence. She has no charisma,

Callistemon21 Tue 06-Sept-22 14:18:43

Perhaps we've had enough of charisma, though.

Not that I thought Johnson had charisma, more chutzpah.

nanna8 Tue 06-Sept-22 14:20:09

Prejudging and making personal comments about someone’s appearance is pretty rank on my book. I always thought gransnet was a fair place with fair minded and open hearted readers. Now I am not so sure and I find it very disappointing. Maybe this woman will turn out to be a poor Prime Minister, maybe not but she should not be judged before she has even started. Shame.

grammargran Tue 06-Sept-22 14:20:47

She may well be Nanny27 but I think people are going on her past record. It’s worrying that she seems in thrall to the ERG group, that she intends to fill her Cabinet with loyalists rather than competent and experienced politicians, to lower taxes when so many of the least well off and vulnerable don’t pay any tax. I was dismayed when, hearing she had won, gave her husband barely a glance, snatched her prepared speech from his hand and strode to the podium without even shaking her opponent’s hand, let alone a brief word of commiseration. That spoke volumes to me, and all of the above and more is evidence enough for me that she is definitely not going to change her spots …

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 14:27:42

Exactly, grammargran. She’s not a complete unknown. A Foreign Secretary with little knowledge of geography it seemed. And now a PM whose declared economic policies have been widely criticised, who will likely appoint Cabinet ministers on the basis of support during her campaign.

Gabrielle56 Tue 06-Sept-22 14:29:41

I third that!!

Zonne Tue 06-Sept-22 14:55:38

Adding to grammargran and GSM's posts: she's just been through what felt like an endless round of hustings for this role, most of which were reported verbatim, and some recorded.

She has had ample opportunity to set out what her vision for the country is. She has avoided any discussion of the NHS or social care, I can't recall anything on benefits, or tackling child hunger and poverty, and she consistently said she would not provide direct help with fuel bills (although she is reportedly backtracking on that now).

What she has focused on is the same anti-Europe, anti-immigration (whilst being forced to recruit for the NHS overseas), confected culture war nonsense that has marked her time in various offices.

It could be argued that she was merely feeding the beast to get elected, but her track record does not suggest that is the case. I think there are ample grounds - and evidence for them - for concern and worry.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 14:58:36

Well said.

sazz1 Tue 06-Sept-22 15:02:34

Perhaps people are prejudice against female prime ministers. Well Maggie was a formidable disaster for industry and working class people, Theresa May was a weak wet dishcloth unable to achieve anything so I'm hoping Lizzy is at least better than those 2.
Maybe we should have kept Boris the cake eater. At least he achieved quite a few things during the most difficult time for the world since the war. Better the devil you know springs to mind

Gawd help us !!!

Completely hopeless - probably worse even than Johnson, but is that even possible!?!

Come back Boris!

You are joking? Aren't you?

Luckygirl3 Tue 06-Sept-22 15:12:26

not only unfair but narrow minded. What is unfair about being aware that our new PM does not have any sort of mandate from the country, is wedded to divisive policies and has all the charisma of a gnat? We cannot pretend that things are otherwise. What is unfair is that we are lumbered with her, like it or not.

Well if any of us need a truss ...

MayBee70 Tue 06-Sept-22 15:22:56

And even Nadine Dorries doesn’t want to be in her cabinet! Mind you she’s off to the Lords isn’t she.

Callistemon21 Tue 06-Sept-22 15:24:10

You Must Be Joking !!!!

For Gawds sake- sorry for seeming sexist- as im a woman too and all- but how many more times do they have to put in a (conservative) woman till they realise IT DOES NOT WORK, and it wont help the beggaring mess the UK is now in!?

I am not a Conservative. I do not like Liz Truss.

But can you tell me why - logically - "IT DOES NOT WORK" if a Conservative woman becomes a Prime Minister?

Margaret Thatcher's premiership seemed to work quite well. Not necessarily for me but that was largely down to her ideology, not the fact that she was a woman.

And maybe Theresa May failed because she was a Remainer doing a Brexiter's job, I don't know - but I don't think it was because she was a woman.

I'm genuinely puzzled why you think a woman isn't suited to the job.

And yes, It does seem sexist.

Reading up the comments I'm starting to like Lizzy. Totally agree we should legalise cannabis as America, Netherlands and other countries have. Its regulated there so you know what's in it and under government control. I don't smoke it but can't see why others shouldn't. Alcohol kills so many people each year but we don't ban that, or tobacco.
Also I think abolishing the monarchy is a great idea and I'm in favour of a republic. We could keep the parades for the tourists without paying a fortune for the Queen and all her hangers on. People living on the streets and her with all those palaces full of empty rooms. Just a president with one residence would suit me.

Forget 'We will deliver ' x 3, I think we need to go back to everything being 'the fault of the previous (Labour) government ' ad infinitum et nauseam, with obviously, one significant word change.

Callistemon21 Tue 06-Sept-22 15:37:24

Ms Truss said a while ago that her speech as a teenage Lib Dem calling for the abolition of the Monarchy was a mistake so don't get your hopes up sazz1.

I hope that, if ever cannabis is legalised, there will be more traffic police recruited to pick up those driving under the influence.

Babs758 Tue 06-Sept-22 15:39:47

I would be more impressed if she would impose a windfall tax on the energy companies in order to reduce the debt to future generations that will be caused by loaning energy companies money!

“Democracy in action”

this is so odd to me, it is how the leader of any Party is chosen.
should we turn it into a Eurovision Song Contest?
surely GN members who are all older people do realise that it is the method used by all political parties in the UK?

I have absolutely no issue with hoe the leader of the Party is chosen. Fair enough. But as they happen to also automatically become the Prime Minister in charge of the country, with a vote of about .17% of the population, yes, I do object- massively.
