Tipping out milk in London stores

I wonder what other Gransnetters think about the incident in which two people poured out milk in Fortnum & Masons, and another store, to demonstrate their wish for everyone to convert to a vegan/plant-based diet.

I do not criticise their wish for everyone to become vegan, but I do wonder if they are using the right methods of persuasion.

Sorry Blossoming, I have no idea how I quoted you there. The joy of being human is that you can ignore people telling you what's good for you grin.

I did wonder!

I have a few auto immune conditions that are always more troublesome when the weather turns cold. Lately I seem to have encountered more than the usual number of ‘self taught’ disciples of Dr, Google who are keen to tell me all my health problems would disappear if only I threw away all my meds and chewed on organically grown peach seeds twice a day. This doesn’t help my grumpy mood at all, could you tell? grin

Why Fortnum and Mason rather than, say, the local Co-op or Tesco's? A better PR stunt perhaps but the Co-op and Tesco's sell far more milk than F&M.

Wasting food like that shocks, but won't convert others to a different diet. Offering tasty vegan treats for free might help more.

And as regards the climate activists in London I think they'll find that their Just Stop Oil banner is produced using oil derivatives. So too the frames for their spectacles, their trainers and their mobile phones.

And did they teleport themselves there?

??????

I make my own decisions and fools like that wouldn't change my mind at all

pinkjj27 Wed 12-Oct-22 12:00:21

If you want to make a statement about the environment wasting food products is not the way to go. Actions like this are counterproductive and actually harm a cause as it brings negativity. I am a vegetarian but I don’t force my choice on others.

Sawsage2 Wed 12-Oct-22 12:02:02

They've probably been ignored all their lives so it's their way of drawing attention to themselves, nothing to do with any 'cause'.

silvercollie Wed 12-Oct-22 12:05:52

Well of course the whole Vegan thing is big business isn't it? And very poplar amongst middle class activists who have nothing better to do with their time.

I am aware that not all these folk are young people either.

And as for wasting food then it is obvious that none of them have ever gone hungry. SHAME ON THEM.

HannahLoisLuke Wed 12-Oct-22 12:10:12

I wonder if they realise that these methods are more likely to antagonise even the most like minded people.

lizzypopbottle Wed 12-Oct-22 12:13:25

I try hard to be environmentally responsible. Climate activists must live in cities with excellent public transport. When they can advise me how to get about in mid-Northumberland without using my car and how to heat my home without using fossil fuels or energy generated from them, I will consider their demands with sympathy.
If they use their own cars, if they heat their homes other than with renewable energy, if they consume imported goods, devices or domestic appliances, if they eat foods that contribute to destruction of rain forests e.g. avocados, then they are hypocrites. Let them put their own house in order before disrupting mine.
There!

Nannina Wed 12-Oct-22 12:14:48

I think they, along with the oil protesters, are loosing support for their causes by their methods. In a cost of living crisis wasting good food and stopping people from getting to work to earn a living is not getting them any brownie points

I do criticise their wish for everyone to become vegan !! surely people have their own choices in life as to what they eat & drink .

So you criticise their wish ?‍♀️

cookiemonster66 Wed 12-Oct-22 12:20:52

I have been veggie/vegan for over 50 yrs & think these extremists give us a bad name. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions & choices. I am constantly having arguments with these new 'jumping on the the latest trend band wagon' eco warriors who behave badly & defend their actions with their excuse of 'good intentions'.

volver Wed 12-Oct-22 12:22:47

Unrelated to the actual protest were talking about on this thread, there seems to be a strong desire to just have a go at people you think are telling you how to live your lives. Or complaining that environmentalists wear shoes (or something). Wanting to change how countries meet the needs of their citizens isn't "telling you what to do" and anybody who thinks it is, is missing the point. Complaining that protesters use energy that isn't renewable (etc) is just laughable. They are trying to get things changed. Do you expect them to live in the dark and not use the electricity in the meantime? Actually, don't answer that...

Theoddbird Wed 12-Oct-22 12:27:49

What a waste of good food. My diet is mainly plant based. It is my personal choice though. I don't try and persuade others and get annoyed at these activists. I do know more and more are going meat free once or twice a week now...cheaper.

I believe everything you have mentioned is available oil and animal free. They may have walked to their destination or cycled.
I have no wish to become vegan and their approach certainly won't change my mind. In saying that, I have changed my attitude and shopping habits to embrace a more environmentally aware.

Fernhillnana Wed 12-Oct-22 12:45:45

So sad and wasteful. My daughter is vegan as am I but we would never condone waste of dairy products as so many animals die and suffer in its production. She worked for a (posh) supermarket one Christmas and they made her throw hundreds of pounds worth of cheese into a skip on Christmas Eve. She wept for so long and it was really traumatic for her.

Pippa22 Wed 12-Oct-22 13:03:37

Watching the news I feel embarrassed and very annoyed that our government can allow such a large deployment of Police to look stupid standing watching these activists disrupting peoples lives. I fear that before long peoples anger will overspill and there will be casualties of death. I wish water cannon could be used, harmless but humiliating. These eco warriors must be stupid, large plastic banners, dyed hair they really don’t have a clue do they ?
This government need to get on and do things for the general public to feel pleased about, dealing with these activists in a meaningful way would help a would arresting the idiots emptying milk out in Selfridges and Fortnam and Mason. Waste is dreadful and why should they try to inflict their ideas on others ? I really like milk and will continue to drink it whatever they do.
Do these activists work or are we paying for them to be unemployed and disruptive ? I hate what they are doing.

katy1950 Wed 12-Oct-22 13:07:31

I think it's disgraceful why should they force their opinions on other people they really need to get a job. If I was deciding to go vegan having seen thier stupid antics I would change my mind

GoldenAge Wed 12-Oct-22 13:08:02

I'm not a vegan and I completely disagree with the methods used by these protestors but although they are old hat, they've got people like us talking about the issue, and personally, I've not drunk cow's milk for decades. Cow's milk is for cows, just as the milk many of us produced for our babies was for them and precisely for them. Oat and nut milks taste as good as if not better than cows' milk, and they don't have the same unwanted effects on the planet as the production of milk from cows does - that's a fact substantiated by academically rigorous research. And I do think that if cows' milk drinkers were to actually see what happens to dairy cows - arms up their rear ends to artificially inseminate them so they can continually give milk with no babies to suckle - they might just thing again about enabling that level of suffering.

Treetops05 Wed 12-Oct-22 13:50:22

My attitude is how entitled are these people? There are people out there who can't afford milk or its a luxury. Yet these protesters feel that not only do they have the right to tell everyone what life choices to make, but destroy items they don't own? I hope they are prosecuted.

Happysexagenarian Wed 12-Oct-22 13:57:03

Disgraceful! What a waste of a food product. That certainly wouldn't persuade me to convert to anything.

4allweknow Wed 12-Oct-22 14:20:56

Urmstongran I constantly look and wonder at all those save the earth type protesters wrapped up, wearing and waving plastic based items. Even the glue they use to stick themself to railings etc.

RichmondPark1 Wed 12-Oct-22 14:22:58

Just for a bit of balance, both these protestors have been charged along with 100 environmental protestors who took action over the weekend. The police did not do nothing.

We don't know that they don't work, in fact I think he definitely does and she definitely sit on committees of climate change charities/activist groups. These people are motivated to make positive change and give their time to that. You might not approve of their actions but their sentiment is worthy of consideration.

They weren't trying to make us vegan. Their protest was aimed at the government.

Gabrielle56 Wed 12-Oct-22 14:25:10

Milk that gets into eco system is extremely dangerous and harmful and these idiots p ok ve the UN know NOWT! Disgraceful to waste a stole like m ok ok anyway I'll drink it up if any left in jugs when I have meals out! We were taught to never waste milk!!
