What do you think of Mary Earps being SPOTY?

Mary Earps, England Women’s goalkeeper was voted BBC’s Sports Personality Of The Year. A lot have said there were more deserving sport’s people who have achieved more. Also it was an England Women’s player last year. The odious Joey Barton has made some horrible comments on Twitter. Should Mary have got it or is it the ‘woke’ BBC? Personally I think she was voted for so that’s that.

Mary Earps completely deserved this award.

Joey Barton sounds horrible.

What a vile comment from this unpleasant man .
Congratulations , Mary .

Congratulations Mary Earp. I’m pleased the bbc sports coverage includes football and delighted the women’s game is getting more coverage
Joey Barton has always been odious. I’d like to see more from the men’s game shouting him and other misogynists down

I would have gone for Ronnie O’Sullivan - great career. Eight championships including being the youngest and oldest and not even a mention!

I cannot stand him, although he's never done anything to offend me!

I voted for her. I just love her personality and the fact that she encourages young girls to play a sport which in my mind that can be a positive. A girls team play matches on my local park and I was watching a match and got talking to another lady watching. I commented how good the one goalie was and she beamed with pride and said it was her daughter. She said no one in their family was sportie and her daughter hadn't been until she saw Mary in goal and thought she might like to have a go and found she loved it and had a talent. Her Mom said all she had done before was sit watching the TV or on her phone and now she trained twice a week and played in matches and was a fitter and happier young girl.

Congratulation, Mary, Queen of Stops! A worthy winner and great inspiration.

How many votes would Joey Barton get? Mary was voted top.

SecondhandRose Sun 24-Dec-23 11:06:51

Depends if SPOTY is given for sporting achievement or not. Or is it for raising awareness of the women’s game? Or any other reason?

BlueBelle Sun 24-Dec-23 11:10:53

Could it be a combination secondhandrose that would seem worthy to me

Cossy Sun 24-Dec-23 11:18:11

I’m delighted!

Spec1alk Sun 24-Dec-23 11:21:56

I voted for her. An amazing goalkeeper!

SueDoku Sun 24-Dec-23 11:49:15

She got it for being a great sportswoman and an inspiration to girls in any and every sport.
That’s enough for me! 👏👏👏👏

This is why I voted for her..! Obviously, lots of people agreed - and used their votes...!!

Joey Barton is disliked by lots of football loving men. He’s sexist and not very bright. Lots of women in sports have to deal with this bias. We have a family member that is an elite sports woman so we see it first hand.On the plus side women face fire with fire and surrounded themselves with like minded people. The Joey Barton’s are a there but looked down on .

Fleurpepper Sun 24-Dec-23 11:58:24

Well deserved, and yes, nasty little man.

But ... and i know we shouldn't comment on what other women wear, and was hoping somebody else would do. But what on earth ?!? was she wearing ?!?

Grantanow Sun 24-Dec-23 12:05:05

Why not?

She was wearing a David Koma dress and looked stunning.

Is no one else sick of the self-indulgent nature of these awards, promoted and run in totality by the BBC, for the BBC, in such a self-congratulatory manner, and the fact the the licence payer is funding the whole thing? There are a lot of people who have no real interest in sport, and I honestly think, if it wasn't run and promoted by the BBC, nobody would really miss it. Surely if we are still having to pay a licence fee for the BBC, they should be ploughing the money into good quality programmes.
So would you miss it?

I was interested in this so I googled it. There was a request for information about costs, which was refused www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/bbc_costs_of_sports_personality
There was a row about sponsorship after Robinsons were involved and it was decided that only charitable and non-profit making organisations could sponsor the event. But it is very difficult to find out any information about the costs.
I think it's OK to have an award. I think whoever receives the most votes should be an accepted winner. But I would like to know who is paying for it.

Why not?

Well yes, but why not wear a bikini then?

DrWatson Sun 24-Dec-23 12:26:05

No probs with Earps winning, though her outfit on the show resembled something Cher might have (just) put on as some sort of 'hooker' tribute?

As for sporting 'merit', my sports advisor tells me it was a very thin year, but it was a public vote. That source also tells me that Joey Barton, a failed footy manager with a history of bad behaviour, is even regarded by footy fans as something that, er, rhymes with "cars pipe"? And yes, probably to him any publicity is good?

Juggernaut Sun 24-Dec-23 12:42:41

I think Mary Earps fully deserved her award, and her dress showed off her wonderfully toned body, it looked great on her!
However, I wish people on here would stop describing Joey Barton as a 'man', he's a slimy, sexist, lying, thieving piece of garbage.
Does anyone remember the 2005 murder of Anthony Walker in Huyton, Liverpool?
Anthony had been babysitting his nephew, along with his girlfriend and cousin, and afterwards, walked to a nearby bus stop to go home.
Unfortunately, at the bus stop they encountered Michael Barton (brother of the odious Joey) and another youth, Paul Taylor. Michael Barton threatened to stab Anthony and his cousin, just because he felt like doing it.
Anthony, along with his girlfriend and cousin walked to another bus stop, but were followed by Michael Barton and Paul Taylor in a car. Barton and Taylor then attacked Anthony, and Taylor plunged an ice axe into Anthony's head, twice!
Anthony died in hospital the following morning, by which time Barton and Taylor had fled to Amsterdam to evade justice.
Joey Barton demanded that his brother should return home voluntarily to face trial, but that was all a sham. He claimed that his brother was completely innocent, and to this day, describes the murder as 'just a scrap between lads'!
Why were Anthony, his girlfriend and cousin set upon by murderous thugs? They committed the crime of being decent, well brought up young people, who happened to be black!
I find it astonishing that anyone can possibly describe Joey Barton and his ilk as 'men'!

Mojack26 Sun 24-Dec-23 12:43:41

Wouldn't have been my choice. I like her but...more deserving of that title like KJT ifyou want a woman.

Rosie51 Sun 24-Dec-23 12:59:29

Juggernaut Joey Barton is a man, you can't arbitrarily exclude him and others like him from their sex class. He is a vile, odious thug, but I don't agree with guilt by association. He is not responsible for the actions of his brother or his brother's friend, but is totally responsible for his own actions and words.

EEJit Sun 24-Dec-23 13:01:01

I'm not a sports fan at all so I don't really have a say, but, rather her then some idiot bloke pretending to be a woman

ClaraB Sun 24-Dec-23 13:13:38

I voted for her, she is inspirational for all young girls who play football, which wasn’t allowed in our day. I love to watch my young grand daughters play.
