My daughter has died

And I just don't know how to cope. She struggled with her mental health for so many years, from her early teens, and I tried to support her in every possible way I could, but it wasn't enough. She took her own life a year ago. Her health problems devastated our family but her death has completely destroyed us all. We all loved her so very much. Now I just don't know who I am or what to do. I know I need to still be Mum to my other children. I know I need to get on with my life in the real world get out there, relate to other people etc but I just can't imagine ever being normal again. I'm just posting here to be a bit anonymous and ask if anyone could give me some motivation or advice?

I don’t have any wisdom or experience to offer, Tigerpaws but I am so sorry you lost your dear daughter. There are many compassionate people on Gransnet and I am sure they will be along soon to offer support. X

Really sorry to read this Tigerpaws. Mental health is very often misunderstood and some people have more sympathy if it is just a health issue itself.

A year has passed and that really is a short time. I think it’s perfectly normal for you to feel like this. Are there any support groups for family of suicide victims in your area? Or would you consider bereavement counselling?

Sending kind thoughts to you and your family. X

This happened when my eldest brother took his own life and my dad said the only thing that kept him going was my other brothers and me. You will get through this - take one day, slowly, at a time. X

So sorry you and your family are going through this I’m sure Anniebach will be able to help you. She is going through the same heartache flowers

I have no words of wisdom for you unfortunately. I can only offer my deepest sympathy. I know of two GN’s who lost children to suicide. One is no longer with us but Annie is and maybe she can help you with advice on coping with your loss flowers

Tigerpaws my darling Catherine took her life 6 years ago, she
had developed a mental illness. My husband died after only 8
years of marriage, anniversary today , I thought that was pain,
so wrong. Take one day at a time, I didn’t have any support,I
reached out here, so much support and caring.

There are others here who know our pain, they too will be here
for you xxxx

So sorry, Tigerpaws. It must still be so raw.
Just sending you love, really, and hoping that posting on here can help you to take a tiny step forward.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Just know that there is help and support out there, and there are many people on here who will always offer a caring, compassionate ear.

I'm so sorry. It's every parent's worst nightmare. I wish I had words to say something comforting but I doubt that's possible. All I can say is keep.on keeping on. Trite, but wish my very best wishes.

Sending you my love. A year is no time and you must still feel very raw. You know you did all you possibly could for your darling girl.

Such a recent tragedy for you; no wonder you are feeling knocked sideways still. My lovely brother took his own life just over 30 years ago, and I still think of him every day. For a parent, especially a mother it is SO hard and seems utterly wrong that your child should die before you. Be kind and gentle with yourself and don't expect yourself to move on; she will always be part of you and your family. The pain WILL start to soften a little eventually, but meanwhile turn to counsellors, friends, your other children and family to talk, cry, remember, love. xxx

So sorry for your pain and hope that posting here and the love that is sent to you helps.
My nephew has been struggling with mental health problems for several years now and this is our worst nightmare. My heart goes out to you and your family.

My elder daughter died four years ago, tigerpaws to a rare cancer that was so sudden and brutal that we hardly had time to process what was happening before we lost her.

I have no idea what motivated me to carry on but I remember how it felt one year down the line when some days I just didn’t want to get out of bed.

As you struggle to manage your grief it’s important to remember that it’s your grief. You will know when you are having good days and bad ones so treat them accordingly. There’s no cure but you will master it and peace will come when you realise grief no longer defines you.

It was a good move to post on Gransnet. You’d be surprised how many of us understand how you feel. You’re not alone.

Sending love to Tigerpaws and all here who have suffered the loss of a child. I am so sorry. I wish I could ease your pain but I hope the fellowship of Gransnet and the strength we are all sending you makes you feel a little less alone.

Sending love to you. My brother took his life several years ago. One thing that helped was SOBS(Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide). You could check if there are any groups in your area, they also have a phone number you can ring. I found it helpful meeting other people who had lost loved ones, in my local SOBS group. I hope you can feel the care of those in this group.

I have no experience of this Tiger paws and can only imagine your pain. There are lovely people here on GN some of whom can offer you more support/ advise than I can . Thinking about you 💐💐💐

Kate1949 Sat 27-Jan-24 22:41:09

I'm so very sorry. My brother too. This is unbelievably hard. The shock is horrendous. My heart goes out to you.

grannyactivist Sat 27-Jan-24 22:54:38

I’m so sorry for your loss. 💐

I can only say that a year is no time at all. Grief has its own timescale, so if you’re putting one foot in front of the other and getting through each day, you’re doing well. After a couple of recent bereavements I waited for eighteen months and then got counselling as I was still unable to process my grief.
