Paragraphs please.

I enjoy reading the threads on GN, but please break them up into paragraphs.

I was just about to read a comment but it was just one long block of writing and I find it hard to keep my place if I happen to look away.

I completely agree. I too find long blocks of print offputting and indigestable.

I probably use too many paragraphs , but my eyes get tired trying to follow an unbroken text . I find it hard to read some of the long ones .

I don’t bother with very long posts with no paragraphs. Too off-putting.

I do often wonder, whether when they preview (maybe they don’t) posters don’t think, ‘Er, perhaps I ought to break that up a bit.’

I find paragraphs make a post more likely to be read to the end

Aveline Sat 08-Jun-24 09:42:01

I often give up on those long, long posts.

I use more paragraphs online than otherwise. When people are reading on a phone posts seem longer than they would on a bigger screen, and it is important to break them up. I don't mind long posts, but it's so much easier when they have paragraphs.

I give up on long unpunctuated posts which don't have paragraphs.

henetha Sat 08-Jun-24 09:59:59

Me too. Just can't cope with reading very long posts.

BlueBelle Sat 08-Jun-24 10:05:49

I can’t be bothered with long long chunks of posts I do start but get half way down and just give up

Charleygirl5 Sat 08-Jun-24 10:37:18

I am partially sighted and can read normal font provided it is paragraphed. I do not bother with a page of A4 totally unparagraphed and in some cases little punctuation. Life is too short.

M0nica Sat 08-Jun-24 10:39:12

Many of the long unparagraphed posts come from US members. Is it a question of how they are taught to use /not use paaragraphs at school?

Lovemylife Sat 08-Jun-24 11:04:19

Realised I’m probably guilty.

But I was wrongly assuming that when you press Return the message gets sent. As it does when using WhatsApp.

Getting the hang of this now grin

JamesandJon33 Sat 08-Jun-24 14:18:54

It’s not just no paragraphs sometimes. No commas or full stops often make reading difficult.

AreWeThereYet Sat 08-Jun-24 16:54:37

But what do you consider a long paragraph? One long sentence? Two sentences? Three?

Or the posts where everything is in one paragraph?

Gummie Sat 08-Jun-24 17:21:40

Very long opening posts put me off even when they do have paragraphs and punctuation. It I have to keep scrolling to get to the end of the OP then I don't bother.

Sparklefizz

I give up on long unpunctuated posts which don't have paragraphs.

Me, too.

It's like trying to plough through James Joyce's Ulysses.

I feel almost breathless at the end of those paragraph-less posts and am not quiet sure that I grasped the point.

I don't even attempt them now.

Kim19 Sun 09-Jun-24 09:02:44

I don't even try. One look then automatic miss. I do realise the content may be interesting but....hey......

Marydoll Sun 09-Jun-24 09:11:44

Long posts, with lack of paragraphs and punctuation irritate me too and I tend to move on.

However, I am aware that some posters may be upset and desperate to get their thoughts down and write without paying attention to coherence.

RosiesMaw Sun 09-Jun-24 09:33:53

Hear, hear from me.

And while we’re at it, this “stream of consciousness” posts where the only punctuation is a series of …between sentences.
I too become quite breathless!
You know the sort of thing
I don’t want to moan…but I need to get this off my chest…and my friend isn’t speaking to me…and my neighbour plays noisy music or cuts his grass when we’re enjoying a barbecue…I can even hear their children shooting basketball hoops…and as for the smell of bacon from their kitchen…when we’re having croissants …and on…and on,..and on…
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Aveline

I often give up on those long, long posts.

I never even attempt to read them. 😖

Aveline Sun 09-Jun-24 10:00:31

I wonder if this thread might lead to a reduction in those long unpunctuated opening posts. Hope so.

henetha Sun 09-Jun-24 10:16:14

Good point. So do I. Not wanting to be unsympathetic, but it's so hard to read some of them.

DamaskRose Sun 09-Jun-24 10:26:52

No paragraphs, no (or completely incorrect) punctuation, inappropriate capitals - I too have difficulty making sense of these posts.
