How long to change to FF Broadband?

I would ring and ask, but it takes all day to get through

Are they actually installing it or just coming out on a survey type visit?

It took a few hours when they did ours as they had to dig up the garden to lay the cable and then fix the box to the outside house wall. Then they had to fit the router to the inside of the house and position it correctly. There was also cables inside of the house as well.

If you go online or You Tubeand ask the question there will be an answer for you, I am sure.

They put a new fibre optic cable to the nearest telegraph pole then ran a new cable into a site at the side of the house where i wanted it. Then he came inside to put a small box on the wall near my socket to plug in the router. I think it was 30 mins outside and 3/4 hr inside.

It's not a survey, they are installing full fibre instead of whatever it is we have now (partial fibre?) I should have asked how long it would take when I made the appointment, but I didn't think about the Zoom class. If they need to put a box near the router socket I'd better move things out of the way there, too.

Yes it can depend on if they come across any problems on installation as to how long it takes. Fingers crossed it will go smoothly they usually do.

When mine was installed they connected my new phone line from the nearest telephone pole with a cherry picker, led it along the side of the house and drilled a new hole in the outer wall. They then fitted the new box on my wall, connected the new youmesh system, installed the app on my mobile so that I could control it (password protect, block items, etc), and showed me it all working. It took about two hours.

Good grief . I had no idea it was as big a job as this. The man on the phone just said someone would have to be in as the engineer needed access to the house.

The router is currently under the stairs, as that's roughly the centre of the house. I've recently had a new floor laid in the hallway, so I don't want them to damage that. If fibre broadband is different (stronger?) maybe it could go somewhere else where there is less risk of damage. I'm beginning to wonder if this was a good idea.

I think this may be one of those 'How long is a piece of string?' questions.
Mine took a day and a half but I think they usually manage to do it well within one day.

Anyway, I hope it all goes well.

BT/Open Reach cancelled my installation which was part of my house move 3 times. A month after the move someone showed up and dug up a bit of my front garden. 2 weeks later a team came back and laid the cable. I now have to wait until August 1st until it's properly installed and (hopefully) completed and working.

t's been an absolute nightmare and I've spent over 7 hours on the phone to them over the past 6 weeks.

BT promote themselves as a Leader in Telecommunications but can't even move you 12 miles down the road!

I would never choose to have my router plug behind stuff in my bedroom!!

When I said mine took about two hours I included all the outside work. One of the engineers came in and asked me where I preferred to have the modem box. I picked a spot in my lounge behind a curtain. Then all the outside work was done. The inside work probably only took a good half hour. I might also add that I am really happy with it.

The current router is under the stairs as when it was in the sitting room the signal was weak at the back of the house, and under the stairs is pretty much in the middle. There is a table under the stairs and it sits on that - I don't mind it being there as they aren't things of beauty . I do have full length curtains in the sitting room though. They currently hide the TV aerial cable, so if the box is small it could go there.

I need the internet for work, so I hope it doesn't take 6 weeks! I can use my phone as a hotspot if it comes to the worst, but I'd rather not.

I'm pleased you're pleased with it, Salti. I'm really only getting it as my current contract ran out and the cost doubled. EE offered full fibre for half the price I was paying Plusnet, so it seemed a no-brainer. Nobody mentioned digging up the garden though.

Ours was easy and only took a morning. However there was a fault somewhere and we had no television for three days
The engineer needed was supposedly in Shetland. When he came he just walked up the road and detected the fault instantly. Been fine since

I have a good contract with EE which is called ‘something fibre’ but I checked with them first that it wasn’t the fibre that had to be dug in and they assured me it wasn’t and it wasn’t thankfully

There was no digging involved with installing mine.It was just a new (fibre) telephone line right into the property from the nearest telephone pole. Mind you there had been months of digging up of pavements in the area prior to us being offered it. I now get uploads and downloads of over 900 Mbps as opposed to the 34 Mbps I was getting previously.

Nobody has arrived, so I called BT/EE and there is a problem with the order, and the whole thing will have to be rearranged. I have had to call Plusnet and cancel the cancellation, and wait to find out when the order can be rearranged. I don't fully understand what happens behind the scenes, so I don't know how the problem has arisen, but I am seething. I've waited in all day, have a busy week next week, so it won't be easy to fit in an appointment even if they can get one, which is not guaranteed. I had planned to go away the following week, and we have workmen in the house when we are away, so this is all complicated.

Why does everything have to be so complicated?

I use my phone as a hotspot when away, and would if I lived alone, but it's a pain when there are two people or more, as not all the connected devices are in reach of it, and I can't go out without disconnecting them.

I've been back onto a helpful chap at BT, and have another appointment in 3 weeks time (😡) but they have waived the connection charge and put a credit on my account for the inconvenience.

What connection charge DD?

Was this for installing your full fibre?

With us, there was no charge when we changed to FF. Didn’t think anyone did actually.

£30 or so for the FF, Calendargirl. TBH, given the stories about digging up the garden and so on I was surprised it was so cheap .

I am beginning to wonder about the wisdom of this. The agent said there will be a box outside and a socket inside, with cabling between them. He doesn't think they'll need to dig anything up unless we are particularly remote, which we aren't, but currently there are no cables that I can think of. I'm not having them dig up my floors!

It all seems such a hassle, and I'm not sure what we are going to gain, really. My daughter says that it will be lots faster, but I haven't felt that the speed is slow, really. We don't play games, which my SIL does, though, so I think speed matters to them more than it does to us.

Anyway, he said I should expect it to take about an hour, which is where I came in in the OP, so now I know .
