It’s raining in Paris!

Actually it is (again) but in my teens that was a warning that ‘Your petticoat is showing”.
“Vive l’empéreur!” meant a chap’s flies were undone.
Mum used to refer to “marking the calendar” for my sister’s and my periods (same calendar was kept discreetly inside a kitchen cupboard door!)
Did you have similar euphemisms?

It was ‘Charlie’s dead!’ for your petticoat showing in our house. No idea why.

Mamardoit Sat 03-Aug-24 21:13:15

Yes Charlie's dead if your underskirt was showing. I can't remember any others.

JenniferEccles Sat 03-Aug-24 22:59:43

Yes Charlie’s dead here too!
A really strange expression, isn’t it?
I wonder what the origins are.

Mind you, how many women/girls wear petticoats now? Virtually none, especially as 90% are in the dreaded jeans 90% of the time anyway.

There is a star in the East, (no idea why) meant a gentleman's flies were undone.

We heard, “It’s snowing down under” for a low hanging slip.

Chestnut Sat 03-Aug-24 23:35:26

I believe men are told they are flying at half mast if their flies are undone. I think.

Same here.

My grandmother would always announce she was, ‘Going to see Auntie’ when going to the loo.

It was raining in Paris when my slip was showing and periods were referred to as the curse. I can't remember any references to undone flies but I like Maw's one and am just waiting for an excuse to use it.

I did hear men say that they are going to show Percy the porcelain when going for a wee. The memories are flooding back now!

I have heard pointing Percy at the porcelain

Snowing in Paris for petticoat showing.
Wearing your medals - flu undone

Aveline Sun 04-Aug-24 05:55:40

Fly!

Ladyleftfieldlover Sun 04-Aug-24 06:06:58

Going to see a man about a dog - dad said that when he was going to the loo.

JamesandJon33 Sun 04-Aug-24 06:12:59

‘Aunt Jane’ was visiting…for your period
‘Charlie’s dead’ for you petticoat showing
‘Dark over Aunt Maude’s’ rain coming
‘A bit of blue to make a sailor’s trousers’. Sun be out soon

Mollygo Sun 04-Aug-24 06:59:55

Pointing Percy at the porcelain I’ve heard men say that.
Your medals are showing or flying low for undone trousers.
Going to see a man about a dog was my uncle’s way of saying he was going to the pub. As a child, I could never understand why those trips never resulted in a dog.

Joseann Sun 04-Aug-24 07:13:37

I nearly died the first time I heard the expression for periods in French.
Les Anglais débarquent.
It goes back to the battle of Waterloo when English soldiers dressed in red uniforms caused bloodshed.

Greyduster Sun 04-Aug-24 07:24:18

“Charlie’s dead” was always for petticoat showing, and it was “you’re showing your medals” for an open fly.

Greyduster Sun 04-Aug-24 07:26:54

“It’s a bit black o’er Bill’s mother’s” indicated that rain was in the offing.

Casdon Sun 04-Aug-24 07:30:09

My nana would always say when she was going to the loo that she was off to spend a penny.

Sparklefizz Sun 04-Aug-24 07:51:09

It was "Charlie's dead" when your petticoat was showing. (I found this very disconcerting when I had a boyfriend named Charlie)

My ex husband used to say "Has Mrs Johnson arrived?" referring to my period.

Spurs at the bottom of the league, for do up you flies !

Auntieflo Sun 04-Aug-24 09:19:48

You're Flying without a Licence, meant your flies were undone.

Aldom Sun 04-Aug-24 09:23:10

It's snowing down south... Petticoat showing.
