I know some of you especially further north have had a disappointing summer, but for me, this evening is affording the first glimpse of Autumn. And I’m loving it!
Darker, drizzling (don’t need to water the pots-yay!) and so much more comfortable.
Cup of coffee instead of iced water and light on to read my book by.
I know summer isn’t over, we are due some nice days , but we are moving into what I feel much more comfortable in.

I'm in Scotland and the thought that we are heading into Autumn is depressing because it's been raining since September last year with very few warm days. I am grieving for blue skies and yellow sunshine!

Not a question of wishingone's life away, simply a question of having preferences.

Babs03 Fri 16-Aug-24 11:45:50

Silly to say those who prefer autumn/spring etc., to high summer are wishing their lives away, nobody actually does that.

MissAdventure Fri 16-Aug-24 11:46:20

Wishes don't come true, as a rule, anyway.

Baggs Fri 16-Aug-24 11:46:23

I love autmn too. Also spring. Summer in western Scotland can be hellish with midges and clegs, not to mention ticks. This morning it felt comfortably cool to do some quite heavy work in the garden without attracting the noisome beasties. Yay, I say!

Beautiful Scotland.

The worst thing is that Rachel Reeves has removed the WFP which I and my husband only got for the first time last year. As we're not on any benefits (and I'm a WASPI woman) it's a large loss for our household.

Only one word for it and thats "Horrible"!

Wind, cloud, more wind, drizzle & rain interspersed with a very hot humid day here and there for what seems months and this is Devon! I’d just like a few weeks of ‘proper’ summer with no interruption. Is that too much to ask? I loathe winter which recently seems to go on forever. Early Autumn & Spring I can deal with so, decision made, I’m going to Australia this winter 🥳

Siope

I’m hoping for a long Indian summer.

So am I. I love summer and I love sunshine. It’s going to be a scorcher here today in the West Country☀️. Clear blue sky outside. I’ve had my walk and will sit in the garden later this afternoon.

Great news!!
Lots of sunshine there in winter!!

Same here in northern ireland. We have been lucky to see sun 1 day a week here since last June 2023 that is. Autumn is kicking in here already.

Glenfinnan Fri 16-Aug-24 12:18:41

Couldn’t agree more! I have no energy in the really hot weather!! Love it when a bit cooler!

heavenlyheath Fri 16-Aug-24 12:19:38

It has been depressing this year not one bbq no sitting outside past about 3pm wind and heavy rain forecasters say showers but with us it has been persistant. Dread taking dogs out nothing worse than smelly wet dog house

I saw my first hint of Autumn this morning when I opened my kitchen blind.
In the valley below me runs the river Severn. Mist was rising off the river and undulating as it followed the flow. Brilliant sunshine and blue skies too. A sure sign Autumn is on its way.

I too saw the first sign of Autumn this morning when I opened the bedroom curtains and there was some condensation on the window. Definately going to make the best of the sunshine while I still can.

Quite

I enjoy all seasons of the year, Especially if they live up to our expectations, although why we expect warm summers and snow in winter, I really do not know, as we rarely get the appropriate weather for the season we are in.

The approach of autumn means to me that with a little bit of luck I shall only need to mow grass twice more this year, and come October I can leave the garden serverely alone until next March or if I am lucky and the weather is still cold, April.

The relief of not having to bother about the garden is marvellous.

Just this. Some rather heated(!) comments about those of us who prefer Autumn. SADs is an accepted condition, reverse SADs not so much but it’s what I suffer from. I don’t begrudge anybody the heat and brightness of summer but I can’t cope with it so I make my own arrangements and stay on the north side of the house as much as possible and garden etc in the late evening/early morning. That’s my reason for not preferring summer and I think it’s a valid one.

M0nica Fri 16-Aug-24 13:45:32

My preference has always been Autumn, ever since as a small girl, I discovered the joy of kicking my way through great heaps of dried leaves. the smell of the leaves is so beautiful

Raking up the leaves in Autumn is far and away my favourite gardening activity, again the smell of the leaves, and I will really miss it when we move.

I didn't think it was Autumn yet - I thought that came in October. But our drive is already covered in acorns and the cyclamen have started to flower!

MissAdventure Fri 16-Aug-24 14:23:34

It's beautiful here again, today.
Not too hot, a light breeze, and dappled sunshine.

Perfect!

Definitely 👍

We have been out with two of the GC, just got him and they are playing in the garden whilst I sit and watch (scroll GN)

Lovely day here and really warm, but the quality of the sunlight has an Autumn yellowness, not the hard white sunshine of summer, and where it shines on the foliage of the trees that surround us they are a more yellow green than they were a few weeks ago.

These days Autumn seems to mean hot dry days, lots of sunshine, but the light and the trees give it away.

HelterSkelter1 Fri 16-Aug-24 16:13:40

MOnica I will invite you to rake up my 2 tons of conkers this Atumn and a ton of leaves!!!!

Ziplok Fri 16-Aug-24 16:14:35

It is still summer. Meteorological autumn will be September 1st, but the autumn equinox will be around the 20th/21st September. I’ll go with the latter 😁.
Early September can often be very warm.
