An interesting slant on the wearing of a burqa.

I am in two minds regarding the possibility of banning the burqa.

I am concerned for the women who will not be allowed out by their “male controllers”, this will create more misery and leave women open to more potential abuse.

However there was an interesting article in the is mornings DM by Khadija Khan.

She suggests the wearing of the burqa encourages Muslim men to assume that women from other cultures are sexually available.

I had never considered this before and perhaps she has a point.

What do you think?

Well I’m not bothered for one.
There are cultural practices and cultural practices and many are just awful.

Lathyrus, you don't know where my quote comes from?
My post clearly tells you that I asked Google.
????????

Monica, some places for you to try where you would not be arrested,
Brighton Beach, Studland Bay, Druridge Bay.
Personally, I prefer to 'tourist' in Seasalt, East and Monsoon dresses.
But each to their own.

Well even quotes on Google come from somewhere. It’s just a search engine, not an author🤔😄

But those are permitted areas and usually enclosed and the people stripping off must stay in their area and not be seen by the general public - a bit like the rules governing those who wear burqas

Primrose53 Sat 06-Dec-25 22:07:44

if they just wore burkas in their own homes and mosques and did not wear them in public places that would be a start.

Wyllow3 Sat 06-Dec-25 22:08:52

Oh, you mean like they are forced to in Afghanistan?

wow, what a terrific suggestion.

Primrose53 Sat 06-Dec-25 22:18:13

This is Stacey Dooley ten years ago visiting her home town of Luton. Plenty of burkas. Shocking really how she was treated in her home town.

Comments make it quite clear. Vote Reform. Our country for whites, etc.

Dooley picks out little pockets of extremism. Not hard to find, with any group..

But what she does, is generalise from this extremism to cover ALL muslims

she's a nasty racist piece of work and I have doubts about this being presented as "Evidence" here.

Why doesn't, for example, she choose to show the many muslims working as doctors or carers of just ordinary mums collecting kids from schools or the ones I meet at my gym, or the ones I meet in my local interfaith womens group.....

I saw that Stacy Dooley video. I've seen various ones by her on different topics - but that was one and I was shocked to see that march and so many women dressed that way.

"Why would someone support a wrongdoer just because they are the same race as them?" was certainly a question that was going through my mind for sure watching that.

I don't think Stacy is racist - from what I've seen of her. She could not have reported that march if it hadnt happened for instance. She'd not gone and hired a cast of actors/actresses.

Thankfully there are lots who do want to integrate...but it's unrealistic to pretend that all do...because it's clear some don't wish to/don't intend to.

Is this libellous,

Stacey Dooley is a well-known public figure and is it quite wrong, even libel.pts, to label her as such on an open forum like Gransnet?

Babs03 Sat 06-Dec-25 22:40:32

I couldn’t say Allira but if it is ok to be openly racist on a GN thread like this, and btw am but pointing at you but those who suggest Muslims ‘are spreading’ etc., presumably like some kind of infestation I suppose, I think making a comment like this about Dooley is the least of our worries.

Babs03 Sat 06-Dec-25 22:43:36

“Sky dancer

Oreo
And areas of London too Primrose53
And spreading…”

And just for the record this is the kind of remark I allude to but there are others, one regarding Leicester.
Openly racist.
Quite disgusting really.

Babs03 Sat 06-Dec-25 22:44:54

Imagine if these comments were made about Jewish people.
Would it be ok?

Babs03 Sat 06-Dec-25 22:46:25

Anyway will leave this thread to more of the same.
Obviously nobody has the moral backbone to call this what it is.

Wyllow3 Sat 06-Dec-25 23:03:17

It's my opinion based on observing her videos, I watched a couple more too.
I just intervene when I see something full of hate.

Allira Sat 06-Dec-25 23:16:25

I think Stacey Dooley made a documentary trying to find out why extremism of both sides had risen in her home town.

That does not make her a racist.

So you intervened in the making of the documentary?

Really?

Stacey Dooley appears to be condemning extremism of any kind.
She is right, we should not tolerate extremism.

Sago asked in the opening post if attitudes of men differed when dealing with women who choose not to wear the burqa. If the burqa is a display of modesty does that, by definition, make women who do not wear "modest" garments immodest?

Lower standards, morally suspect?

I threw away the lace mantilla I used to chastely wear at Sunday mass in the 60s when I read about the Borgia's unholy shenanigans - don't do as I do, do as I say hypocrisy.

Wear modest dress as a fashion statement if it floats your boat, like any fashion statement it's all about the look not the morals.

Do Jewish people cover their faces?

I wasn't aware of that.

Babs03 Sun 07-Dec-25 11:51:28

That is not what I meant I was talking about racist comments about Muslims being all over Leicester and in London and spreading.
But if you want to be disingenuous about something so horrid that’s up to you. I even sent a post so you could see for yourself.
As with all racists the discussion about the burka was just a platform for them to then sue their odious opinions.
Anyone who thinks this is just about liberating women in burkas must be on another planet.

Babs03 Sun 07-Dec-25 11:52:11

*air not sue
