Boxes of chocolates

I have been given a box of chocolates for Christmas, and have been sampling them this afternoon?.

They are what one would describe as modern flavours. Whilst delicious I have decided that I really prefer the more traditional flavours.

I love coffee cream but detest orange and strawberry creams. Terrys used to have a tangerine flavoured one in their All Gold box which was delicious. Generally speaking any hard centred dark chocolates go down well but you can put white 'chocolate' in the to be disposed of pile, disgusting stuff.

I also mourn the demise of Terry’s Spartan, together with their 1767, I loved those drawers. I do actually prefer hard centred chocolates, but do enjoy the Moser Roth Bars, the individually wrapped sections encouraging self discipline!
BTW does anyone remember having a sliced Mars bar shared round during the days of rationing- we really are spoilt for choice now!

Favourite 'modern fkavour'- dark chocolate flavoured with chilli.
Traditional- chocolate caramels- the really chewy ones that get stuck in your teeth (sorry for the graphic description)grin

Yes indeed. I never had a whole Mars bar to myself till I was grown up. It was cut in three for my brother, sister and myself.

Jane10, weren't you lucky. Our Mars Bar was cut in five pieces so that my parents could have some too!

All this talk of chocolates brought back a memory of my auntie V. Unusual for her generation she was the chief buyer for an electrical company and at this time of year she would be inundated with enormous boxes of chocolates from various reps. These boxes would be placed in a pile next to her chair and as the weeks went by she would eat her way through, occasionally offering one to her eager eyed nieces and nephews. The sad part for me though was seeing my Mum’s face when Auntie V offered to give my mum one of her precious boxes and then she rifled through the chocolate mountain and fished out the tiniest box of Roses keeping the beautiful trays all for herself!

I still occasionally have a Mars Bar finely sliced, but I like it from the fridge. Oh dear, now need to add Mars Bar to Christmas groceries order.

My OH says being in the fridge takes away the flavour. I love chocolate hard and cold, then it slowly melts in my mouth.

If it's chocolate - I love it!!

What happened to the lovely Christmas boxes you used to get with beautiful pictures of the front of the box ie kittens with santa glittery hats and things.

Jane10 Sun 20-Dec-20 11:09:06

annodomini- we were spoilt brats right enough!

DH still cuts Marathon bars in two and saves the second piece for tomorrow! It’s why he is thin and I am not.

Old fashioned here. Milk Tray and Dairy Box. Orange cream, strawberry cream, turkish delight, nut whirl, coffee cream, caramel. Yum yum.

EllanVannin Sun 20-Dec-20 11:27:53

Mars Bars were nearly a foot long and I too remember them being cut into pieces to have during the day. 2 or 3 mouthfuls now and they're gone, plus the taste isn't the same either which goes for many things when you compare them with yesteryear.

SJV07 Sun 20-Dec-20 11:34:38

I have tried making my own chocolate covered ginger this year. Not difficult. It is called 'enrobing' I kid you not!

EllanVannin Sun 20-Dec-20 11:36:33

Aussie chocolate is certainly an acquired taste, even their Cadbury's as there has to be additives in it to stop it from melting.
Their dark choc, liquid mint filled chocs were my favourite there and the jelly centred Freddo's both Cadbury.

Hershey's ? You can keep it. Yuk.

Ferrero rocher, lindor, Terry's choc orange or maltesers for me. Not keen on very fancy boxed chocs as usually too many that I'm not keen on. Used to love milk tray when much younger but not now and don't like dark chocolate. Don't mind baileys truffles but a basic bar of fruit and nut also acceptable. I usually get chocs as tell my kids if they want to get me anything I need to be able to eat it, drink it, wear it or plant it as got no room in the house for more "stuff" ?

Kaggi60 Sun 20-Dec-20 11:45:03

I was given a box of Milk Tray but found them salty. I think i will stick with a box of Dairy Box.

Even I’ve moved on from Cadbury’s since thy were taken over by one of the colonies.

The colonies made me laugh Wwmk2.
I agree though. Theyve ruined my treat! Its far to sweet and not so chocolatey!
I like Lindt (cant remember if I've spelt it right). Prefer home made if poss.

I made a batch of clementine & chocolate hoky poky this morning. It was for Christmas but after yesterday's news, maybe not.

EllanVannin Sun 20-Dec-20 11:50:35

Proper Turkish Delight and not the gelatine-free muck.

Namsnanny Sun 20-Dec-20 11:52:56

EllenVallen and half the pleasure in a Mars bar was how thick the outer coat of chocolate was.
If I want a chucky treat nowadays (rare) I have a fancy icecream with a thick chocolate coating.
OoooI might have to get one for the freezer, I dont have to guzzle it down in one do I?????tchblush

Namsnanny Sun 20-Dec-20 11:54:34

What happened yesterday Chewbacca?

I like the Orange and Strawberry creams in Quality Street. I used to love Weekend boxes of chocolates from years ago. You used to get candy and jelly sweets in them as well as chocolate one's. I used to like the green one. I also like marzipan sweets as well. Lidl sells some nice bars with dark chocolate on them.

Chewbacca Sun 20-Dec-20 11:58:54

Only the same rubbish news that thousands of other families have to deal with for Christmas, at very short notice, Namsnanny. I'm telling myself "it's just one day; there will be others; it's no big deal", but I'm fed up with it nevertheless! smile

It seems to be assumed that everyone likes Belgian type chocolates these days. I also prefer the ones we used to have. One of my favourites was the cracknel in Quality Street but they did away with that several years ago.
