Boxes of chocolates

I have been given a box of chocolates for Christmas, and have been sampling them this afternoon?.

They are what one would describe as modern flavours. Whilst delicious I have decided that I really prefer the more traditional flavours.

Coffee, praline, truffle - in that order. However I am an addict for Peanut M&Ms. My daughter always sends me some modern, fancy chocolates, and I eat them - it is chocolate after all, but would love someone to tell her to save her money and send me some M&Ms or Thorntons Truffles.

White chocolate is an abomination.

I’m another lover of coffee chocolates and find it harder and harder to find them. M&S do coffee filled bars, or did, and tThorntons always have a lovely selection, but I’m now going to investigate Hotel Chocolates.

Hard centres for me; nuts and toffees. You lot can have all the creams.

I like the older flavours too, though I don't like any of the creams except a strong mint. And I positively LOATHE praline though I love marzipan which I suppose is a sort of praline.
All in all I think I prefer a nice slab of milk chocolate, I'm very plebeian and don't much like the dark.
@EllanVannin I remember the Terry's boxes with little drawers too and still have one of them (somewhere!). And the big chocolate boxes with just one layer and a lovely picture.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 20-Dec-20 12:34:47

What happened to the boxes with lovely chocolate boxy pictures?

GreyKnitter Sun 20-Dec-20 12:39:33

I used to like the toffee and hard centres best - but need to be careful with the teeth now!!!! We’ve got Celebrations. Like those and nothing too hard!!! Reading about Mars bars I could def eat one now! ??

Who needs chocolates when you can get Toffifee? Chocolate, nuts and toffee all in one. Yum. Apart from that, I don't think you can beat Lindor in all forms.
Quality Street have become a real disappointment as they have pretty much removed all my favourites or limited the quantities of them. As far as I am concerned you can keep the coconut and cream ones. Give me nuts, toffee or the orange crisp.
If I were to choose a a bar of chocolate it would be a Dark Milk Chocolate one from Green and Blacks. Other than that, anything with Salted Caramel gets my vote, palm oil or not.

EllanVannin Sun 20-Dec-20 12:43:00

Yes, those lovely pictures on the boxes. You could actually frame them.

What about the " snow houses ?" Novelty decorated cardboard houses/ cottages that you had in the centre of the table and were filled with things such as those in crackers, but better quality, though even crackers were better in those days.

The wooden boxes of crystalized fruits, they were delicious.

Orange smarties, lindt 70% dark chocolar

handbaghoarder Sun 20-Dec-20 13:08:08

Give me Cadburys Heroes or Roses any day. Lindor if I must. Bought OH a Hotel Chocolat advent calendar this year. Havent wanted to fight him for any of them. I dont like Thorntons and have to remind OH of that fact every year. Although he ‘knows’ this he still bought me 3 large boxes one year. . I think they were 3 for 2 ! Bargain! And he liked fact they were big boxes!! First world problems I know. I took them to work and donated them to a local charity

Whitewavemark2 Sun 20-Dec-20 13:18:52

Candied fruits yum and candied marron yum yum.

Witzend Sun 20-Dec-20 13:27:39

I really like the rose and violet creams but hardly ever get them. Also the orange creams in Black Magic - or any orange creams come to that. Ditto dark chocolate peppermint creams.
I like toffees but my fillings don’t!
Dark chocolate brazils always go down well here, too - I found some small boxes in Waitrose - funnily enough I think Father Christmas will be putting one in dh’s stocking. ??

LauraNorder Sun 20-Dec-20 13:30:28

I’m a cheap date. Lidl dark chocolate with chilli, peanut m&m’s or a snickers bar.
Anything with marzipan or coconut. A box of chocs is never wasted but never enjoyed as much as Lidl choc & chilli.

Llamedos13 Sun 20-Dec-20 13:34:21

After Eight is my favourite, dark chocolate and a minty creamy filling. Sooo delicious.

therustyfairy Sun 20-Dec-20 13:53:14

Booja-Booja Chocolate Truffles
And for a very special present see their artist collection
Don't let the Vegan, organic, dairy-free, gluten-free and soya-free description put you off, I'd be happy to barter most things for a years supply of these

Witzend Sun 20-Dec-20 13:56:32

Many years ago my father used to buy several truly enormous-looking boxes of chocs as company presents for more junior staff - they were only single layer but looked very impressive - with a pretty chocolate-box type picture on the front, too.
He’d also give one to both grandmothers, and my DM was once shocked to hear that her mother had called neighbours’ children over to see her enormous box of chocs - and then hadn’t offered them one!?
It was very unlike her, usually a v generous type!

I love Lily O`Briens Dessert collection. Each one tastes like a dessert, perfect for me as I like something sweet to finish a meal.

Me too, they're my current favourite. Although I do miss the days when you could walk into a Thorntons shop and pick your favourites.

BlueBelle Sun 20-Dec-20 14:03:21

I don’t like chocolate so I ll throw any I get over to you all to fight over

elleks Sun 20-Dec-20 14:12:52

Neideregger marzipan for me-my SIL always buys me an assortment box. Does anyone remember Terry's Moonlight chocolates? You had 2 of each filling; one in milk chocolate and one in plain.

Looks like nobody’ll be fighting me for the white ones, BlueBelle, so just aim them straight over here.

Funnily enough, when I asked my lot what sort of Advent calendar they wanted this year, seven of the thirteen of us went for Milky Bar. We’re obviously a set of plebs.

What memories this thread conjures up. My late father-in-law liked Terrys all gold or Spartan. My dad always bought us girls and my mum beautiful big boxes of Dairy box (are these still made) with pictures of flowers country cottages etc wrapped around would be a lovely ribbon. I l used to enjoy Milk Tray Dairy box and Quality Street but they've messed about with the chocolate and the flavours they don't taste the same. If it ain't broke don't mend it. Why can't manufacturers leave things be!

annodomini Sun 20-Dec-20 14:46:10

The way to get round my late mum was a box of chocolate gingers, while my dad preferred chocolate with hazelnuts, though I usually had to fight him for the coffee cream in a mixed box. Nowadays, I much prefer good quality dark chocolates and avoid toffees, having removed one of my crowns on a chocolate caramel two years ago.tchsad

Don’t like liquid toffee, what has happened to all the hard toffees in a box or tin? Love love love coffee fondant cremes. The cheap ones, not the Thornton’s type truffles. You don’t see many coffee cremes now. Or hard toffee or nougat.

Nell8 Sun 20-Dec-20 15:14:31

Liqueur chocolates are ghastly. Such a waste of good chocolate..

I like my chocolate in biccy form with built-in potential for play. I love to nibble it off a McVities Club or use my tongue to prise it off a Tunnocks Teacake leaving the marshmallow intact ..... need to get a life.

seacliff Sun 20-Dec-20 15:17:49

Rum truffles, really posh expensive ones from a little chocolate shop near me. And chocolate liqueurs, when you bite the top off, there is actual alcohol inside.
