What did you think? I caught up with it on iPlayer last night just to see how it went as it was his first Christmas speech, and I thought he did quite well.

I also thought it was a very good idea not to be filmed sitting at a desk surrounded by personal photos which could then be picked apart.

Our Head of State would be a parliamentary President similar to Ireland’s President a well liked and respected Mr Higgins.
Prove it?
How can you guarantee that?

Witzend Mon 26-Dec-22 19:32:58

IIRC, volver, in Thailand (which I have visited twice) it was illegal - and punishable by imprisonment - to criticise the monarchy.

Emphatically not the case here!

volver Mon 26-Dec-22 19:35:50

Emphatically not the case here!

Yet.

The excuse of "But we're British, that couldn't happen here!" isn't so convincing any more.

Well over 10 million tuned into his speech.

One of them was me.

I'm not exactly a vigorous supporter.

I’d still bet quite a lot on it not happening for a long time - unless of course we’re eventually taken over by Russia or China.

Plus, imagine how many people would have been banged up here in the last few years if it were illegal to criticise the PM! 😱
They’d have had to build several new prisons! Has Putin managed without building any more, I wonder? Maybe he just has a lot of them meeting sudden, ‘accidental’ deaths instead - so very convenient.

volver Mon 26-Dec-22 19:49:11

But we're British, that couldn't happen here!

Nobody will ever lie to the Queen!

We'll never all stay in our houses for months on end just to suit the government!

The Royal Family will never be involved in shady dealings!

hmm

I just looked it up - satisfaction for Michael Higgins is 73%, last satisfaction survey I could find for the Queen was 83% - I’m not suggesting that proves anything, but it’s fair to say nobody at all is universally popular.

"Emphatically not the case here!" but possible.

The Treason Felony act of 1848, a law which makes it illegal to advocate for the abolition of the monarchy and carries a life sentence is still on the statute book.

Smileless2012 Mon 26-Dec-22 19:58:52

Is it really Normandygirl, I didn't know that.

I'm not a vigorous supporter either volver, didn't listen to the late Queen every year but am pleased we did last year, as it turned out to be her Christmas day speech.

Hmmm, well I think it comes down to you usually being in the minority with the way you think on every subject and thread Volver but if you don’t care about that, it’s all good.

How rude and unnecessary

Oreo Mon 26-Dec-22 20:46:47

Ah, there you are Lucca I’ve been expecting you🤣

It wasn’t rude and it was neccessary.

Volver isn’t bovvered.

volver Mon 26-Dec-22 20:51:40

Volver has quite a thick skin and is quite used to ill mannered folk who think they're making funny statements while being insufferably rude.

Volver also appreciates the people who take the time to speak up for her.

Why was it "necessary"?

Oreo Mon 26-Dec-22 21:00:26

Because I was answering a previous post of yours.
You must admit that you often go against the grain, nothing wrong with that until you use sarcasm.
You did say you weren’t in the least bovvered.

volver Mon 26-Dec-22 21:04:04

Posting on GN is never necessary. Especially if one is targetting a fellow poster.

Similarly, I have never used the word "bovvered".

Ever.

Oreo Mon 26-Dec-22 21:06:38

I’ll hold you to that sentiment for the future then Volver

volver Mon 26-Dec-22 21:14:27

Oh you can do it. It's just not "neccesary".

volver Mon 26-Dec-22 21:25:10

Or even "necessary". 😂

nadateturbe Mon 26-Dec-22 21:34:05

Charles is sitting on a huge fortune, most of which is either the result of slavery, unique and unjust tax breaks or the state allowing him and his family multi-million pound income from state assets
True and just so wrong.

Granmarderby10 Mon 26-Dec-22 21:49:41

I may watch it again because I became distracted by the Kings appearance. His suit looked enormous as though he had lost a lot of weight and needed his clothes altering (which I know is very unlikely) …the suit I mean. The left sleeve of the jacket looked empty

I’m not sure that means much.
AFAIK there is still a law - never repealed - to state that all men between 16 and maybe 40, must go and practice their archery at the butts every Saturday.

And another to state that any Welshman found within the city walls of Chester (I think) after sunset maybe be shot by any bona fide resident with a crossbow.

Oh I forgot I am not allowed to support Volver….sorry thread monitor. I just don’t like personal attacks. Let me know when I can join in again won’t you.
Nothing necessarily wrong with being in the minority

nadateturbe Tue 27-Dec-22 07:15:32

Interesting Witzend 😄.

Galaxy Tue 27-Dec-22 07:55:13

Being in the majority doesnt mean a lot to be honest either, especially as opinions tend to shift over time.

BlueBelle Tue 27-Dec-22 08:27:48

I didn’t watch it nor did I watch the Queen it all seems unnecessary I like Charles and Camilla and I think as Royals go they re probably pretty ok but I don’t like the thought of such vast differences in wealth I m not a communist but think things should be a lot more equal than they are

I m neither supportive nor anti Royals but I would never curtsy to another human being I do not feel my status in life makes me any less a human and I can’t revere another however rich, privileged or titled

Grany Tue 27-Dec-22 09:41:49

Here’s Why Britain should ditch king Charles

m.youtube.com/watch?v=qElmEr8RrLg&t=138s

Accepting money from some dodgy people giving honours for cash
Insisting NHS support alternative medicine thinking that coffee enemas cure cancer
Not allowing tenants on Duchy land to buy the land their house sits on its run in a feudal way belonging to another era. Etc etc etc

Keeping money from duchies Cornwall and Lancaster between Charles and William and not paying any corporation tax.
