ANGER

We need to be angry. We need to hold the government to account.

Yes, many of the populace are not abiding by the very lax lockdown. BUT the government should have abided by the WHO advice to TEST, TEST, TEST. By not doing that, they will have cost tens of thousands of British deaths. Our family members, our friends, our colleagues.

When this is over / slowing down, they need to be held accountable. We had THREE months notice. We watched Italy and Spain. And yet, they did nothing.

They actually admitted today that masks might not stop you from catching the virus but would prevent an asymptomatic person from coughing or sneezing thereby infecting you. Which again is something that we've been saying for ages. And in another interview [I didn't notice who it was with] it said that the reason for not advocating the use of masks was that there weren't enough of them to go round. As ever the people are leading the government. Going off at a tangent here but my daughter did a click and collect from Tescos today and they have really got their act together; she was very impressed.

MawB grin I would also go with the a 'tenuous grip of reality' for some posters.
Either that or political point scoring is the name of their game.

1) A bully boy. A member or ex member of the Bullingdon Club. Whence arrogant upper-class boys treated working-class people like dirt.

2) Johnson admitted to taking cocaine.

3) No, you're right. 980 isn't 1000. I rounded it up in error. BUT that 980 isn't including care home deaths, so actually, the number will be higher than 1000.

Number 1 for tickingbird.

Apparently all types of masks seem to have a role to play in restricting the spread. Even home made ones. Expect that the government will come to this conclusion in the next week or so.

GagaJo Mon 13-Apr-20 21:09:22

Hahahaha, Daisymae!

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Apr-20 21:12:16

daisy ???????

That just about sums this whole debacle up.

Labaik Mon 13-Apr-20 21:13:03

This is not about political point scoring. This about people dying in vast numbers and the fact that we need to do everything possible to stop that happening. And if that means questioning what the government are telling us sobeit. I mean, they told us all we needed to do was wash our hands. Then that sporting events were safe. Then told us we'd better shut ourselves indoors after most of us had already decided to do that anyway. Now a lot of us think that wearing masks might be a good idea. Shall I run a book on how long it will be before the government play catch up. I say 7 days.

I’ve never been a member of the Bullingdon Club Gagajo. In fact I didn’t go to Eton but I do know someone that did if it helps? ???

My previous post being in answer to this bizarre post.

MawB Mon 13-Apr-20 21:19:39

Tickingbird Are you confusing “Pop” (Eton) with the Bullingdon Club, (Oxford ) - private all-male dining club for Oxford University students, known for its wealthy members, grand banquets, boisterous rituals, and occasionally (oh really?) bad behaviour.

GagaJo Mon 13-Apr-20 21:36:39

A response to your comment of 13.4.20. 14.48. tickingbird.

You misinterpreted my 'bully boy' comment.

Nana3 Tue 14-Apr-20 10:18:47

A friend in Italy called us before any government advice was given and said,
Why is your country not doing anything? It's coming to you.

tickingbird Tue 14-Apr-20 10:39:37

Gagajo Sorry was half asleep.

Masks, apart from the really high spec medical ones, will not prevent the virus particles getting through to you because they don't have small enough holes.

What they will do, as a far as I understand, is prevent such a wide spread of droplets from the cough/sneeze of an infected person if they are wearing one, and maybe prevent the entry of a large number of virus particles.

I have seen comments to the effect that people wearing masks and gloves have been observed to be more lax in observing social distancing and indulging in riskier behaviours.

I recall that there was a similar argument made against compulsory seatbelt wearing in the '70s.. so I don't know if it is valid, Worth a thought, though.

Labaik Tue 14-Apr-20 12:57:07

I don't know about everyone else but, when we start to come out of this it worries me that doing things eg going to a supermarket again will give me panic attacks. However wearing a face mask would give me some sort of reassurance. I did read earlier today [I'll try to find it but it was a comment on facebook from someone who lives there] that compliance, in general in Thailand isn't very good but people do wear face masks and this has resulted in a much lower mortality rate. I apologise if I've got this wrong as I was just browsing half asleep on my ipad. I think the comparison with the UK and Ireland that I mentioned earlier is in todays Times so I'll try to find a link to that.

surfsup Tue 14-Apr-20 13:20:01

I have also heard several times 'experts' saying they do stop us touching our faces so much which is one of main ways the virus transmits apart from breathing in the droplets. It has made me aware of how much I touch my face - apparently we do it over a thousand times a day without realising which is scary. Keep washing those hands!

Pikachu Tue 14-Apr-20 13:29:58

Anything that forms a barrier even if not 100% is better than nothing. I think that seatbelt arguement has been disproven for the majority and that will apply here.

GagaJo Tue 14-Apr-20 13:36:00

Nana3 and Labaik, my best friend is in China. She said weeks ago, LONG before there was a lockdown: Stay in. Don't go out AT ALL. IF it's an emergency, wear a mask and gloves.

We can't get masks or gloves (despite ordering them over a month ago) BUT we have locked in totally. No supermarket. No outside exercise.

Labaik Tue 14-Apr-20 13:45:50

A facebook chum of mine bought some masks in January when he first started to worry about where we were heading. They were £6.99. They're now selling for£100.

tickingbird Tue 14-Apr-20 14:23:52

I have to go to the shops though. I have had two home deliveries but weeks before I can get another one. I only go once a week and wear a mask and gloves but it does freak me out a bit I must admit. I have dettol wipes in the car.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, GagaJo, but did your friend in China give you this advice while you were still working in Europe and had been in contact with a colleague who tested positive?

If so, I'm surprised you then flew to the UK to be with your family, thereby ignoring her advice and risking infecting others?

POGS Tue 14-Apr-20 19:07:55

Merlit

Fairly made point/question.

'Johnson admitted to taking cocaine. '
---

Did you read your link and consider that to be proof Johnson is a drug user as previously mentioned.?

I think in general if it was then some responses by a few MP's when asked about their youth and taking drugs would be enlightening.

maddyone Tue 14-Apr-20 19:12:31

I don’t go out at all either. I look longingly at the lovely sunny weather, and I’d really like a walk, but I’ve resisted and haven’t been further than the garden. I think it’s the safest way to be honest. I have asthma and take a high dose steroid/bronco dilator inhaler plus an oral medication every day to control the symptoms. My daughter who is a GP has told me that I should be on the ‘shielded’ list because of the strength of the inhaler I use but as yet I haven’t had a letter. She has told me that I should phone my doctor and ask why I haven’t had the letter. I haven’t up to now though. Anyway, that’s why I’m not leaving the house or garden.
