In about 3-4 weeks time .

This idiot government is losing control.

Callistemon Tue 12-May-20 22:20:39

Gagajo I am surprised at your comment.

So many people have tried to be supportive of you on GN with all your problems, including me, but obviously unappreciated by you.

Sometimes those whom you give to are the ones who then take it away.

What I find hard to digest is that they're only now talking about quarantining people coming into the country.
The horse has already bolted.
I'm becoming one of those people who shout at the television in disbelief.
Too little, too late, too tory.

MayBee70 Tue 12-May-20 23:11:36

They say ‘the science’ thinks now is the right time to do that: except it’s not now it’s in a couple of weeks time. And I don’t think it includes France. At the moment. They keep telling us to use our common sense but, thus far they science’ doesn’t seem to have applied any common sense to their advice. Oh, and it’s only now advisable to wear masks. Unless we don’t want to wear one in which case we don’t have to. Does that make it any clearer?

GagaJo Tue 12-May-20 23:24:00

Callistemon, you’re not surprised at all. Don’t be disingenuous. The cliquiness on here is pathetic. It’s the playground all over again.

OmaforMaya Tue 12-May-20 23:34:23

Whitwavemark2. It's not always the Government's fault. Look around and see how many people are not for, living the basic instructions. To stay home, not let visitors into their homes and not keeping social distance when out. The general public are so stupid at times and very self centred. So please....not all blame should be directed at Westminster.

MayBee70 Tue 12-May-20 23:45:51

Therefore it’s up to Westminster to make sure the regulations are perfectly clear, not done in such an ambiguous way that people can interpret them in whichever way they choose. Our lives are at stake here: we need strong leadership from government. Can you not see that they’re trying to pin the blame on us for when the death rate goes up again?

As long as guidelines are followed we should be fine. This virus is going to be around for a long time, we have to get used to a different way of life. The whole world has changed.

Weefinn Wed 13-May-20 09:40:35

And there’s this: metro.co.uk/2020/05/12/new-york-now-has-100-children-suffering-deadly-covid-19-related-kawasaki-disease-12693774/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

Weefinn Wed 13-May-20 09:41:46

This is exceptionally worrying, with schools being reopened here in less than 3 weeks... metro.co.uk/2020/05/12/new-york-now-has-100-children-suffering-deadly-covid-19-related-kawasaki-disease-12693774/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

It's not the government's fault anyway. Nature made this virus and she has probably wiped out half the humans and animals in the world several times before. Sometimes no matter how smart their suits and ties, and how long their words, humans can't control everything nature throws their way.

Sparklefizz Wed 13-May-20 10:32:56

This is in The Times today:

"There have now been more than 40,000 Covid-19 deaths in the UK, although weekly fatalities are falling, according to official figures.

"Separately, modelling by The Times estimates that 61,000 people have died as a result of the pandemic when deaths caused directly and indirectly by the virus are included."

Joesoap Wed 13-May-20 11:21:41

I think the UK Government should have put the country in lock down much earlier, however its too late now, as long as people keep to the rules, things should be sorted, and lock down eased in time.

growstuff Wed 13-May-20 13:24:57

Theoretically, the infection COULD be eradicated completely.

If everybody was shut up in a defined space for a certain time (two weeks?) with absolutely no human contact, the coronavirus would have no host. Borders would have to be totally locked down too.

Of course, that would be totally unacceptable. The people who are already infected and those with illnesses requiring medical care would die. A few young children, old and disabled people would die too.

When formulating a plan, the government should concentrate only on the essential contact needed to make sure that those who can't be self-sufficient don't die.

Zink1 Wed 13-May-20 18:14:26

Could this be a secret plan to discourage immigration to the UK? The world looks on in horror, the images and statistics lingers in the world's collective memory for years to come.

The UK is no longer seen as a safe haven.

Sparklefizz Wed 13-May-20 18:26:27

Zink1 It's made no difference so far!

moggie57 Wed 13-May-20 18:37:03

i had to get three young teenagers to move from the bench in our communal gardens .they said they were cousins .do you all live in the same house. em no they said .ok says me i need you to move from the bench .one/ because you are smoking weed.2. /because you are not 2 metres apart. and 3. because i'm over 60 with health problems .oh they said why you out then? .me .because i am watering the flowers .its my exercise.. so after waiting 10 minutes for them to move while i pottered around .i said you need to go now please. so they went.....i then sprayed the bences with antiseptic spray .(just incase)

varian Wed 13-May-20 19:08:46

Well done for trying to sort them out. I hope they listened to you and thought about what you said.

Furret Wed 13-May-20 20:33:34

moggie I admire your restraint. I’d have been very tempted to spray the bench with them on it.

LadyBella Wed 13-May-20 20:42:25

How can there not be a surge? What would stop it? There is no cure for the virus.

MayBee70 Wed 13-May-20 21:33:24

But there are more things we can do to help. Mandatory mask wearing in public places. Hand sanitiser everywhere. Open windows where possible. Some countries I believe have things in the street that take peoples temperature and can pick out those that are infected. More cleaning of public places especially toilets. Tracing, testing containing. We're learning more and more about the virus. But we're not imposing those measures fast enough.

growstuff Wed 13-May-20 22:03:58

I agree MayBee. Lockdown has had results, but we need to continue and go further. There are currently very few people who are showing symptoms or are infected but not showing symptoms. They need to be traced and isolated. Those who need to be isolated need to be given every support possible to stay at home and not feel that they are forced to work because they need the money.

Daisymae Wed 13-May-20 22:57:41

Lockdown was always half hearted and no where near as stringent as in some other countries. Today the impression is that it's lifted but officially it's officially still in place. A bit. Here and there. It feels like a surge in infection is inevitable

MissAdventure Wed 13-May-20 23:00:52

I've just watched the news, showing the tube trains today.

Just terrible. Everyone crammed together, lots not wearing facemasks.

MayBee70 Thu 14-May-20 00:13:54

But, according to some people, that’s their fault.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 14-May-20 05:25:50

Whatever the rhetoric coming from this mealy mouthed government during the first covid spike, about how wonderful are the essential workers and let’s give them all a clap, it is swiftly forgotten and they are sent to work without any adequate preparation or protection, once the almighty economy needs feeding.

An good example of workers protection would be in Spain. Here buses are tapped off appropriately and free masks are available for every passenger.

Can you imagine that happening here?!

No - use your cars is the advise. Let’s undo all the environmental gains we have achieved over the past few weeks. Abysmal air quality is the unseen killer, killing many thousands a year - mostly poor inner city folk. So they don’t matter.

Soon it will be grid lock on the road.
