Things are getting serious as France is because of covid is blocking lorry movements.

It wouldn’t have made much difference to the European drivers if 24 or even 48 hours notice had been given though, because they would have needed to deliver their goods In the UK, that’s why the number of trucks waiting has increased. It’s ingenuous to blame Macron, as it’s highly likely we would have done exactly the same if the situation was reversed.

Nezumi65 Tue 22-Dec-20 18:19:57

I think over 40 countries have closed their borders to us haven’t they?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 22-Dec-20 18:21:35

gg13 what a brilliant idea.

I think our borders should be closed forthwith????

LauraNorder Tue 22-Dec-20 18:26:15

I had already answered Growstuff when I said that the chaos in Harwich and Holyhead was caused by other EU countries and not the UK. Ie Holland and the Republic of Ireland. I thought you’d be able to work that out.

Isn't Macron doing what all the Brexiteers wanted us to do (and said we couldn't while we were in the EU) exercising control over his country's borders?

Apparently only the UK should have control?

I don’t get it

LauraNorder Tue 22-Dec-20 18:27:48

Had we felt the need to close our borders at such short notice we would be working to repatriate our nationals and to feed them in the meantime, it’s what we do.

Your faith in this chaotic government is touching.

It can’t even feed its hungry children.

I do hope that these stranded hauliers are the benefit of your good will when they are blockading EU ports in the event of a no deal Brexit.

The word you are looking for is won’t

vegansrock Tue 22-Dec-20 18:38:48

Terrible, all those countries using their sovereignty and controlling their own borders.

Greeneyedgirl Tue 22-Dec-20 18:47:27

Well with the sort of chaotic messages UK Govt has been sending out about this new variant virus to it’s own citizens, out of control by Hancock, for one, it’s no wonder the French and other countries hastily closed their borders until things are clarified.

Any responsible government would do the same surely?

Nezumi65 Tue 22-Dec-20 18:48:00

I don’t think stranded hauliers can be blamed for a no deal Brexit - they’re not just from France anyway. In the event of a no deal I don’t think we’ll need hauliers to cause chaos. That will be entirely of our govts own making. Kerching (for Rees Mogg).

GrannyGravy13 Tue 22-Dec-20 18:50:07

Every Country has a right to control its borders obviously.

I just wonder why posters on GN are blaming the UK Government for the chaos these closures are causing?

biba70 Tue 22-Dec-20 18:53:10

oh my, GG13, do we really have to explain ?!?

I am not blaming the hauliers for a no deal Brexit - but if that’s the outcome and it effects foreign hauliers the French hauliers unions will be the first to blockade the French ports. They have done so in the past and will in all probability do so again.

Please do

Nezumi65 Tue 22-Dec-20 19:12:07

If we have a no deal we’ll have far more problems than a few lorries blockading somewhere (not sure why they would but we’ll see).

Chappy on BBC has just said that EU states remain sovereign and can control their own borders. I am assuming this is news to some people.

There is no evidence of Britain looking after the welfare of those drivers trapped at Dover this week. They have been left there on the M20 with no toilet facilities, no food, and no personal hygiene requirement needs being distributed.

That is what we do, meaning nothing. There are also some reports of lawlessness breaking out in Dover town centre tonight close to the port entrance.

Retiredwell Tue 22-Dec-20 19:25:59

Apologise I forgot to post link my above post.

wont need to reopen them GrannyGravy13 we wont be importing OR exporting anything to the EU in a few days ...in charge of our own borders isn't that what you voted for?

lemongrove Tue 22-Dec-20 19:46:15

GrannyGravy13

Macron is doing absolutely nothing to repatriate French Citizens, he has caused the chaos he should take responsibility for it!

He won’t of course, he’s muscle flexing as there are French elections in the near future, hope the French lorry drivers remember that they were stuck for days because of it.?
Once again ( for those who blame Brexit for everything)
This has nothing to do with it .....( I know, a disappointment
Isn’t it?)?

trisher Tue 22-Dec-20 19:53:19

lemongrove Of course this has everything to do with Brexit. It is yet another example of the lies told by those wanting us to leave the EU. Or have you already forgotten that we (apparently) had to leave to get control of our borders.

Callistemon Tue 22-Dec-20 19:54:03

Do you have evidence to prove that, Retiredwell?

As hold ups have been anticipated - not, of course to the extent that has happened because of COVID, the traffic is being well managed.
There are toilet and food facilities available and most of the lorry drivers have fridges etc for their own food in their lorries always as contingency in the event of hold ups.

Nezumi65 Tue 22-Dec-20 19:57:44

Well a few lorry drivers have just been on bbc saying they have no access to food or toilets and are weeing/craping in fields/beside the road

growstuff Tue 22-Dec-20 19:57:50

How do you know that toilet facilities are being provided? The media and tweets from the drivers themselves suggest they're not.
