News channels reporting with the increase of covid infections saying we should be all returning to face mask wearing...how do GNs feel if/when it becomes compulsory again?

Minerva Fri 22-Oct-21 11:52:36

I could claim medical reasons for not wearing a mask. I hate wearing it but I do. I also hate that perhaps 50% of people in our nearest supermarket don’t.

Marilla Fri 22-Oct-21 11:53:24

My husband and I still wear a mask in shops. We are lucky not to have issues in wearing a mask. We don’t need to use public transport, but if we did of course we would wear masks.
I felt much safer in Scotland on a recent visit than I do here in England!
Its quite shocking and arrogant of the Government to fail to heed advice from Scientists and the NHS.

Urmstongran Fri 22-Oct-21 11:53:50

As said upthread Lucca I wear one when requested to do so. Outside? No. I keep my distance. Or stand still if somewhere busy to wait a minute, then pass by, passing no one closely.

I've asked for my post to be deleted cos it was totally daft, but the darn things wind me up so much. Bridgeit, I have very rarely worn one, and I'm still here - they don't work!!

Do enlighten us, what are your epidemiology qualifications? Are they from the great University of Facebook?

Nannabumble70 Fri 22-Oct-21 11:54:48

Yes will continue to wear a mask

yogitree Fri 22-Oct-21 11:56:44

We live in Scotland and have continued throughout with masks when inside shops/library/bus/doctor/vet etc etc. It's a courtesy to both ourselves and others and may make a big difference if everyone does it. People in our town do.

I read today that apparently 70% of covid cases in hospital have been double jabbed. I then did more research & found this www.politifact.com/factchecks/2021/jul/30/facebook-posts/uk-health-official-misspoke-when-he-said-60-hospit/

We still wear masks if in a shop or bus etc but hardly anyone else does now. Dh just returned from Sainsbury and it was just him and the staff in masks. I can’t imagine how staff feel.
Apart from anything else it’s a reminder of the serious situation we are in. We are on our way to another lockdown and no one seems to care. Our numbers are the highest in Europe.
Most Europeans still wear masks and need Covid passports to get entrance to restaurants etc. We seem to be acting as if it’s all but over. It’s not,

I wear a mask and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I am genuinely astonished at the number of people who simply don’t bother anymore. The number of infections continue to rise and yet hardly anyone wears one in my area. I simply don’t get it…

I wear one. Yesterday at hospital speaking to dr and staff they said should be compulsory. I returned from France three weeks ago. PCR in France before returning to UK and PCR two days after I returned home. During the 4 weeks I was over there everyone wears a mask it’s compulsory and fines heavy if you don’t. On visiting a restaurant I was asked to show my Nhs Covid passport to price I was double vaccinated. Even in a small outdoor cafe I was asked. What’s the problem in doing that? It’s better until we can eliminate or reduce virus. This morning a young neighbour had tested n found to be positive. He’s only had the one vaccination so far. He’s got asthma n is very worried. No wonder we dint have a high flu rate last year because we wore masks. It’s up to each and everyone of us to do our bit.

Yes I wear a mask and use hand sanitiser and give my hands a good wash when I get home.

maddyone Fri 22-Oct-21 12:03:12

Thank you GrannyTracey for that informative post. I already knew that Prof Patrick Vallance had made a mistake and that he self corrected that mistake later, but it’s possible that not everyone on here knew that.

I haven't stopped wearing a mask, day in and day out

I don’t understand it either Mamma66. It seems unbelievable to me that the numbers of infections are rising so much and yet many people are behaving as if they have never heard of Covid.

Missiseff Fri 22-Oct-21 12:07:15

Never stopped.

Caro6699 Fri 22-Oct-21 12:09:26

Yes, I still wear a mask when entering shops, restaurants, public transport and anywhere indoors if it’s busy. And I will continue to do so for the foreseeable future as I do believe it offers some protection, both to me and others I may come into contact with. It’s my choice even though I am now doubled jabbed and have just had a booster

Sueo246 Fri 22-Oct-21 12:11:54

My husband and I are still wearing masks inside shops and public buildings and have done so throughout. Neither of us has had a cold in over 18 months. Lots of people are not bothering but we shall continue and may well do so in cold and flu season in future years regardless of Covid.

Lupatria Fri 22-Oct-21 12:15:24

i don't wear a mask as i am exempt. i suffer from asthma and cannot get enough air into my lungs while wearing a mask or visor. i wear a lanyard which tells everyone that i'm exempt and i have no problems not wearing a mask if i go to the doctor or hospital.

essjay Fri 22-Oct-21 12:16:11

yes in shops

Quaver22 Fri 22-Oct-21 12:16:39

I am wearing a mask everywhere I go indoors. I can’t see that it is very inconvenient and I believe there is evidence that wearing a mask will offer some protection to the wearer and others. If they don’t work then there is no harm done. I wish they would be made mandatory in all indoor situations especially on public transport.

GrannyTracey Fri 22-Oct-21 12:17:06

I’m in Scotland so they are compulsory unless except . I work from home & have really tried to avoid shops for all these months unless absolutely necessary but 4 weeks ago I caught an awful cold & cough , it is still lingering . I went for a pci test twice but both negative & do a lateral flo before I go out but no idea how I caught the cold cos most people are wearing masks here . I suppose you still have to remove a mask to blow your nose & then if not sanitising hands straight away it is passed on weather it’s a cold or Covid. I have noticed more people in my area are going without masks now ( no lanyard in sight) & obviously shop keepers do not want to challenge anyone

Yammy Fri 22-Oct-21 12:19:23

Yes, we both wear masks in shops and busy streets. Even collecting the grocery delivery from the door.
I think they should be made compulsory like in Scotland until the take up of the vac for those eligible is over well 90%.
Then some of these foolish people who ignore advice that is not mandatory might waken up. Or they should be told that their vaccine is being sent to a third world country. Where it would be taken up.
I know of someone who laughingly said they had been with a group of others to an event and they were betting on who would get it. They were the unlucky one and extremely poorly.

I still wear a mask and will continue to do so until the pandemic is declared over. I don’t understand the resistance to them - it’s not a huge ask, so why? I’m fact, I almost like wearing one sometimes because I get menopausal acne and it covers up the worst areas!

Shelflife - the number of facemask lovers...

... "facemask lovers"? That mild slight tells me most of what I need to know about your post. It's akin to those anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, who start their comments with a generalised insult to anyone wearing a mask or being vaccinated - where we are referred to as "sheeple", "fools", "losers", and constantly being told to "WAKE UP" (nearly always in Capitals).

Most people are aware that masks do not offer complete protection - put simply, the virus can squeeze in between the fibres - but they do give some protection and therefore under the circumstances I cannot see why wearing them in crowded and overcrowded spaces should not be mandatory.

Even sneezing into your elbow or handkerchief can be preventive to some extent - that's why people do it.

Can you give peer-reviewed scientific evidence for your claim that they "DON'T WORK"... and why you feel it necessary to shout your claim in Capitals?

Nannapat1 Fri 22-Oct-21 12:24:46

I wear one when required to do so, which for me is London Transport and any healthcare setting.
I can remember when we were told that they weren't effective, at least not the sort the public tend to wear and how they wear them, before we were told the complete opposite!
I am surprised that so many seem to regard the mask as the key means of reducing Covid-19 infections, when surely it is one of several measures, which when implemented all together are very effective.
