Virtual cruise from Venice along the river Po with the option to learn some Italian
The suggested format is that this is a discussion thread about the places along the route, links allowed, together with the option of synchronised learning of some of the Italian language using the free Duolingo language course. Sort of like a treasure hunt for information, yet no teams, people sharing what they find.
LINK > www.duolingo.com/courses
Participants using Duolingo will need to register, free, with Duolingo.
Registering with Duolingo does, by default, make one's profile public. On a computer, one can make it private by clicking on the blue disc at top right, choosing Settings, scrolling down and then choosing Privacy Settings, then unchecking the checkbox that is labelled Make my profile public.
Count me in, especially if we can call into one or two baccari per un'ombra following in the footsteps of Commissario Guido Brunetti (solving Venetian crime with wit and pure Italian style since 1992?)
Quick recap, please, for the confused (=me).
*The River Cruise will be coming to an end? Limited links, non-Argy, vegan? Yes?
* The Venice one, with DuoLingo classes, is starting soon? Is this Vegan/omnivore, Argy/non Argy, link free/in moderation/links welcome?
Is that it?
Thanks for the clarification- I should hate to enrol inappropriately.
Make sure you get 3 day Vaporetto pass so you can hop on and off the vaporetti at will.
The Guggenheim is worth a visit. Personally I don’t
Like St Marks, too ornate. The island of Torcello is lovely with mosaics in the church and a fabulous restaurant. Last time I was there we went to the Jewish quarter. Fascinating.
If you’re lucky maybe you’ll bump into Francesco da Mosta!
I am hoping to get one more visit (real) to Venice
Sorry I’ll shut up now.
Actually just one more thing. I left Italy after four years in 1976. and returned to Venice about 16 years later. One evening walking down a random side street I heard someone speaking English and Italian…and .there was an Anglo/Italian couple with whom I had been very friendly when living in Milan!
Huge excitement and hugs..can you believe they were in fact only in Venice for that one evening.
What's the vaporaetto?
Will we get vaporised?
Joseanne
Oh yes, Io. Spiacente.
And…the pronoun isn’t always necessary, more for emphasis.
Sono una donna.
Lei è una ragazza, ma io sono una donna. She’s a girl but I am a woman.

The boat bus.
I did bump into Francesco da Mosta once Lucca. Well not bumped into exactly
I stood in the queue to get his book signed in Waterstones in Birmingham. He wasn't very friendly. Not exactly Venice, although I've been a few times .We have lots of canals though!
Hello Chewbacca and Hello MissAdventure.
This is how it works on a desktop computer.
I have not tried it on a mobile telephone, so this may depend whether someone using a mobile telephone cn do a mouse drag. So if it does not work please say.
First go to Google maps.
LINK > www.google.com/maps
Search for
Venice Italy
as there are other places called Venice.
You should get a map of Venice.
You may well get a map with Venice as tiny in the middle of the screen with the words
Saint Mark's Basilica
on the screen.
Over to lower right, there should be, arranged vertically, a + sign, a - sign, and a shape know as the "orange pegman" or sometimes just the "pegman".
To get into the street view pictures, one first needs to zoom in by clicking on the + sign. Do it slowly as many times as necesary until streets are diplayed.
Then one drags the orange pegman (that is mouse down, then drag, and when the dragging starts, there shouldlight up blue lines and possibly some blue circles superimposed on the map.
The blue lines are where somebody from Google has travelled with the special multilens camera, either in a car (generally, but not in Venice), or in a backpack, or on a barge, or on skis, whatever, with the camera system gathering an image from each lens every ten metres. Once one is "in" one can move along the street.
The blue circles are stand-alone 3d panoramas. Some sent in by members of the publc.
To get "in" one drags the orange pegman onto one of the blue lines or onto one of the blue circles and one then releases the mouse button. That mouse up event should result in being "in".
Please have a try to get "in" somewhere, anywhere, just to find out if that method works on the device that you are using.
If it does not work we can try to find out why and maybe get it to work.

The Venice one, with DuoLingo classes, is starting soon? Is this Vegan/omnivore, Argy/non Argy, link free/in moderation/links welcome?
I'm hoping it is va bene tutto or should that be tutto va bene?

Hello ixion.
> *The River Cruise will be coming to an end? Limited links, non-Argy, vegan? Yes?
The virtual cruise on the river Main has arrived at Bamberg earlier today.
There are links to videos.
The idea I have in nind, subject to change depending upon input from other paricipants on the virtual cruise on the river Main is that we look around Bamberg, whatever we find, and maybe have one or more overland side trips in a similar style as earlier in the virtual cruise.
Then at some stage we leave Der Goldene Delfin at Bamberg and we travel to Venice, depending upon the time and interest, perhaps stopping off on the way for side trips, reaching Venice sometime on Friday. We then move to this thread, explore Venice over the weekend, then leave Venice on a cruise ship to travel to the river Po.
The other thread will not be regarded as completed as at some time we may return to Bamberg and rendezvous with Der Goldene Delfin and then travel down the canal towards the Danube and then proceed along the Danube.
> * The Venice one, with DuoLingo classes, is starting soon?
Yes, all being well.
> Is this Vegan/omnivore, Argy/non Argy, link free/in moderation/links welcome?
Well, whereas the river Main one was specified as vegan, this one has not, following comments, been specified as vegan.
Tis partly because some non-vegan items may be mentioned in the course but also so as not to be dictatorial.
However, a culture seems to be emerging that, as a courtesy, it will be vegan. For example, a lady mentioned food in this thread and her examples were vegan.
So, if there were two virtual cruises and someone were paricipating in each thread, using words related to food preparation in each thread, then there might be a culture that the recipes in this thread are vegan and that the recipes in the other thread are omnivore, as a courtesy rather than as a rule.
This thread is intended to be very definitely non-Argy.
It is a fact that Argy style appeals to some people, but not to others.
Some people are happy to both do Argy style in an Argy thread and also to do non-Argy style in a non-Argy thread.
That is fine.
The river Main virtual cruise has benefitted enormously from the use of links. So for this virtual cruise links welcome, no need for moderation on number, good links enhance the experience in my opinion.
I hope this helps.
Per me un Martini. ?
Per favori.

I'm hoping it is va bene tutto or should that be tutto va bene?
Oh.
I had thought that there were going to be two.
This one non-Argy, vegan by courtesy rather than rule, links in abundance, exploring Venice and the valley of the river Po, learning Italian using Duolingo.
One started by someone else in the Italian lakes, Argy, omnivore, whatever rule they want as regards links, with whether or not to have learning Italian with Duolingo whichever they choose.
Actually, I think it was very courteous and nice of you giving vegan examples in this thread.
