The Gransnet 10,000 steps a day club

So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Ps versavisa, obviously not asleep at a decent hour!

Versavisa Sat 06-Sept-14 02:09:03

No Rosannie and I'm still not asleep. Having major trouble getting to sleep most days. Am going with the flow and only going to bed when I'm exhausted.

Rosannie Sat 06-Sept-14 16:09:24

I hope you did manage to sleep eventually Versavisa, I'm having a lazy day so will probably be awake tonight too. No chance of 5000 steps today never mind 10, 000!

Clocked up 14,500 on Thursday day up in London and a lot of walking, but only managed a miserable 7,800 Friday due to aching feet. 10,525 for today clocked up mainly taking our granddaughter to the swings in Bushy Park. Putting my feet up now with a glass of wine.

10144 for me today out to tea tomorrow so lots of cake not many steps perhaps grin

Iam64 Sun 07-Sept-14 09:16:25

10,800 on Friday, and 8.900 on saturday. This thread has encouraged me to increase my steps again, and so far, so good with the foot problems smile

I have just had a look at iPod mini bought for my birthday by Mr Purple with music in mind and it has a fitness, step counter app built in. Has anybody used this? I do want to have a go at doing this before winter sets in and waistline expands beyond all recognition. smile

Aka Sun 07-Sept-14 23:24:30

Yes, definitely walking more. Of course started off great guns first week or two, but settled into a steadier pattern now, with a respectable total most days and one which is gradually increasing.
Well done others.
Sorry Purple I have used Map my Walk on my phone but prefer the simplicity of a good pedometer.

shysal Mon 08-Sept-14 08:03:49

Aka, my progress (or otherwise) has also settled into a pattern, and I don't always achieve my goal. It looks like Sunday will be my best day, as I can fit in 2 decent walks. Yesterday I totalled 22,694.
Ian64, pleased to hear that your foot is improving.

chloe1984 Mon 08-Sept-14 08:18:48

Only 7568 for me yesterday as mostly spent sitting chatting to family and eating cake. Hoping for a better day as off to the coast for a walk. shysal have nothing but naked admiration for your amazing total well done totally awesome.

Iam64 Mon 08-Sept-14 08:33:05

9,800 on Sunday, my dogs are delighted that things are returning to normal on the long walk front. We did almost 6,000 on our Sunday morning walk, so had a good start in trying for 10,000. Thanks shysal, for the comments about my feet. Fingers crossed that almost 8 months of inflammation in the feet is now well and truly on its way out. Well done to everyone, this is an inspirational thread.

TerriBull Mon 08-Sept-14 09:26:30

Very bad day yesterday around 5,000 mark, but we had a big family lunch so little opportunity to go walking. Will do better!

Versavisa Mon 08-Sept-14 10:18:14

After 20+ steps over the weekend (14,961 Saturday and 6,587 Sunday) I seem to have slept better. Hope this is a turn for the better.

I enjoy looking at the pedometer whenever I stop and think about it. I seem to have managed not to reset it accidentally for a while now so perhaps I'm more aware of it.

You all seem to be doing good amounts of steps. Well done.

Aka Mon 08-Sept-14 10:42:19

Funny how days are so different. I've already walked further today (by 10.30am) than I did all day yesterday.

shysal Mon 08-Sept-14 14:16:07

As I have said, I had a good day yesterday, but I spoilt it by picking up a giant freebie cooking apple whilst on a walk. I later stuffed the centre , encased it in pastry and baked it in a butter and sugar sauce! I hope the 955 calories I clocked up will have covered this binge (the dumpling was huge and I ate the lot, in installments, with Elmlea cream, instead of eating dinner!) blush

Get thee to The Naughty Step shysal shock

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 08-Sept-14 15:29:55

In a moment of utter madness I clocked up 46,000 steps on Thursday. I have no desire to walk anywhere ever again!!

Aka Mon 08-Sept-14 16:15:57

Wow! What did you do walk the Pennines Trail?

Purpledaffodil Mon 08-Sept-14 16:42:50

Thanks Aka. I tried it today just to see if it worked and it seems ok. You can buy a very butch armband to hold it in place, but I tried tucking it in my bra and that seemed to work, of course I could be logging extra steps with my less than pert bosoms.grinTrouble with pedometers I have had in the past is that they were cheapie ones with clips and seemed to fall off and get lost very quickly. I did manage 5000 so far today, thanks to a trip to the shops. I look in awe at those who achieve 20k plus flowers

Aka Mon 08-Sept-14 16:55:46

Out of curiosity just dug my pedometer out of my pocket and I'm up to 11,123 already. Doesn't feel like I've done anything, but other days when I think I've done well it's only 6000ish.

Weird.

shysal Mon 08-Sept-14 17:08:49

Did it take you all day Cari? That would have taken me about 7 hours plus stops. It was more then a moment of madness! Respect!

chloe1984 Mon 08-Sept-14 19:48:35

Well 14015 for me today was really pleased until I read your total Cari well done I am sure I will never ever achieve half of that in one day. Am pleased that I have persuaded my DD and Sister to join in with step counting even if I did have to buy the pedometers grin

TerriBull Mon 08-Sept-14 20:57:13

10,637, I would have been pleased with that once till I read about Cari's 46,000, about four days' worth, does that mean you have 3 days with your feet up now?

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Sept-14 21:02:15

After you've done all this walking, do you have any energy left for anything else? Don't you feel tired all the time? (not including spring chickens, like Cari)

shysal Mon 08-Sept-14 22:21:44

I actually feel more energetic! I did a full on Body Attack class this morning, and have walked 14,469 steps as well as mowing my grass, cutting the hedge, food shopping etc. I know I am younger than some, but am doing my best to remain fit and healthy for as long as possible. Exercise can make one feel good mentally as well as physically. Don't knock it until you've tried it, Jingl! smile
