So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Only 4520 for me yesterday. It was such a lovely day that I spent most of it catching up on gardening. Hope to do better today, including LBT class, although have grandparent duties for part of the time.

Still can't believe it but yesterday I did 20,007 steps! Had a long walk looking at the architecture in London and there always seemed to be something around the corner to lure me on. Needless to say I think I will be having a quieter day today so that my feet can recover.

Aka Wed 03-Sept-14 15:07:46

Can you still walk today Versavia?

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 03-Sept-14 16:08:22

I can't!! Took a wrong turning which meant my total for the day was 17 kilometres (about 26,000 steps). Was fine til I did five more (k not steps) this morning and have now seized up completely. Think best to postpone swimming tonight and lie on the sofa watching Bake Off instead. Shame grin

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 03-Sept-14 16:09:13

Versa - we would love to know your route - we are always looking for new and interesting places to walk!

Versavisa Wed 03-Sept-14 16:12:18

Aka just checked my pedometer and it says 44, one extreme to the other! Can walk but just tired. Yesterday's walk was lovely though.

Cari enjoy Bake Off and I think you deserve the rest.

grin

Counting the minutes!

Versavisa Wed 03-Sept-14 17:39:07

Cari As far as I can remember (it's all logged on Runkeeper I think) we started at Putney Brudge station, walked up the Kings Road to Sloane Square, walked up Sloane Street to Knightsbridge, walked across Hyde Park to Marlborough Gate, then walked back across the park to High Street Ken. Lots of diversions into shops (not the designer ones!) and restaurants and byways. We were mainly looking at the buildings above street level as they are fascinating. We logged 8.5 miles and I was pleased not to have tripped up as I was looking up so much!

10078 for me today do not anticipate adding many more as I too am sitting waiting for the Bake Off. Well done to youversa and you Cari amazing totals.

TerriBull Wed 03-Sept-14 19:32:24

Fantastic result Versavisa. Didn't make the grade today, have just gone over 9,000, maybe a few more before bedtime but I wont get up to the magic 10 once I sit down for Bake Off at 8, probably wont get up again. Up to town tomorrow, for hubby's b'day I have a meal and a theatre trip booked and we won't be taking the tube!

chloe1984 Wed 03-Sept-14 19:43:45

Have a great day Terri

TerriBull Wed 03-Sept-14 20:01:26

Thanks chloe. Amazing total Cari.

I have just bought a fitbit and after wearing it all day have clocked up 10494 steps and 4.87 miles. I only went out for a short walk but live in a town house and have been up and down the stairs so many times today as was packing for a holiday in Suffolk/Norfolk. Might be going to Walberswick too!
Am looking after GD tomorrow which usually involves going out for a good walk.

10,191 for me yesterday. Got a free day today so have a choice - be lazy or go for the record! May end up somewhere betwen the two.

Versavisa Thu 04-Sept-14 10:52:00

Very few steps for me yesterday, as might be expected. If I can get fitter I hope to be able to recover faster.

Has anyone noticed any benefits yet? I haven't, though it's early days I know.

shysal Thu 04-Sept-14 11:57:59

Versa, as I have mentioned before, I have been sleeping better. On Saturday I only did around 4000 steps, and got about 2 hours sleep! My resting heart rate is going down and I am sure I recover more quickly. Hope you will soon feel the benefits.

chloe1984 Thu 04-Sept-14 13:57:23

I too am sleeping better and seem to have more energy although that could be me just trying to boost my total, but on the whole am enjoying the challenge.

chloe1984 Thu 04-Sept-14 19:57:56

10356 from me today

Iam64 Fri 05-Sept-14 08:16:24

shysal Fri 05-Sept-14 08:35:56

Rosannie Fri 05-Sept-14 12:26:29

At last! 11, 534 steps yesterday the first time I have broken the 10,00 barrier since I joined your club! Youngest grandchild is full time in school from next week so hoping to have time for longer walks.

chloe1984 Fri 05-Sept-14 12:40:52

We'll done you Rosannie not sure I'll make it today but, plenty of time yet.

Versavisa Fri 05-Sept-14 15:00:42

Glad to hear some of you are sleeping better now (that's what I was hoping to hear) as I'm not. My sleep pattern is all over the place but I'm trying to ignore it and hope it fall into a decent pattern eventually.

chloe1984 Fri 05-Sept-14 20:03:04

10201 from me today not hopeful for tomorrow as travelling and furniture shopping.

Rosannie Sat 06-Sept-14 00:38:48
