The Gransnet 10,000 steps a day club

So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

I think jingl is more of a cyclist?

I'm not as tired as I used to be and sleeping better too. I've started taking some Co-Q10 and don't know if it's that, the waking or the placebo effect.

I'm a great advocate for the placebo effect. I had a sinus headache on Sunday morning so dug out a packet of Sudafed. Took two out to take with a glass of water and took the dogs out for their walk. Within 20 minutes the headache was gone and I was thinking how lucky we are to have medicine like this.

Got back only to find the two tablets still on the kitchen table!

I have tried it. I have walked miles and cycled all my life. And I use an exercise bike at home. But it does make me tired. And tiredness can bring depression. That's all.

But don't let me stop anyone else. (As if)

My pedometer arrived today from Amazon. It is now set up and is ready to go in the morning. With arthritis in knees and hips it will be interesting to see what I cover in a normal day.

Enjoy, Coolgran. My hips and knees are improving, hope you find the same.
Jingl, in my experience tiredness caused by lack of sleep can bring on anxiety (and vice versa), but physical tiredness has improved my sleep pattern, hence a feeling of well being. Slept from 11.30pm right through till 5am last night, that is a good night's sleep for me! We are all different aren't we? smile

Yesterday (Monday) my pedometer showed only 5,000 steps. I did most of those in the morning, and spent the afternoon stripping wallpaper. It was a very tiring experience, my feet ached, my shoulders and wrists ached. I did over 4 hours of it, plus all the tidying up (well, mriam was helping) so though my steps are down, I do believe I probably used more energy, but not in such a pleasant way.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 09-Sept-14 08:46:21

Not such a spring chicken grin - which is why I got into all this in the first place.

Usually I find after a walk I have bags more energy. After that one not so much (understatement)

Pennine trail would have been much more picturesque - alas the route was rather less scneic. Walked DD a mile to school. Walked to the gym (about 45 mins) Did a class then walked home. Ran around doing lots of errands then went to meet a friend in the evening and we decided to walk an hour, have dinner and walk another hour but the quest for the PB was too strong and we kept on walking.

It won't be happening again!

Jingle regarding your original question, I can only speak for myself. I have never been a particularly sporty person, but on the whole I think walking does make me feel better, although I probably should wear trainers more often have been wearing fitflops all summer and whilst they are comfortable for walking, they don't support the ankles and they ache after a long walk. Some days I feel far more energized than others. I'm glad I bought a pedometer, it's got me off my backside more often I have a natural tendency to gravitate towards the sofa, like right now!

Cari you know that we know exactly how old you are. We can count.

#booktitle

wink grin

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 09-Sept-14 09:36:53

That post would have been better if I had said "exactly how old young you are"

shysal Wed 10-Sept-14 08:05:28

Just scraped in at 10,287 yesterday. Aiming for a bit more these days.

Gracesgran Wed 10-Sept-14 09:07:42

This seems like such a good idea. Is the idea that each and every day you do 10,000 steps or is there more to it than that?

shysal Wed 10-Sept-14 09:26:53

chloe1984 Wed 10-Sept-14 20:55:57

Versavisa Thu 11-Sept-14 12:25:08

Had a good day yesterday. Walked to the doctors and back then went blackberrying in the afternoon. Them berries are darned elusive so a lot of steps needed to find enough. Clocked up 16k but today will be a bit quieter - not so many steps between the jam pan and the sink!

Versavisa Thu 11-Sept-14 12:30:37

....and I've forgotten to put my pedometer on this morning!

Gracesgran Thu 11-Sept-14 12:37:57

I like the look of this. Presumably the first step is to measure what you are doing and work towards beating that bit by bit.

Do you have any recommendations for pedometers. That seems a good place to start smile

shysal Thu 11-Sept-14 13:20:09

I have one of these, also available on Amazon. Only disadvantage in that it measures in Km, not miles.
tanita pedometer
The cheaper ones I have had in the past have either fallen off and got lost, or been inaccurate. I hope you decide to join us, and look forward to hearing of your progress.

shysal Thu 11-Sept-14 13:22:44

Gracesgran, I apologise for getting your name wrong above. You will know by now that there was a regular by the name of Gracesmum, Grace being her dog. Must pay more attention! smile

Iam64 Thu 11-Sept-14 13:30:39

8,900 yesterday, but again 3 hours stripping wallpaper, surely that counts as it uses so many muscles grin

shysal Thu 11-Sept-14 13:48:58

Oh yes, stripping uses lots of energy!grin
