So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."
It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")
One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.
So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.
(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)
10,265 I would have done more but was walking along the sea shore hampered by strong winds this afternoon.
Delighted with my 9333. Not done any long walks just been out and about, mainly in shops and garden centres.
Just back from a week away, during which I did 12,000 on average, every day.
I read some research from the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council, which had followed people who either had, or were at high risk of developing, osteo arthritis in their knees. The volunteers were followed for 5 years. At the end of this period, those who'd walked 5,000 a day were more mobile, had less knee replacements, and fewer at high risk had gone on to develop osteo in the knee joints than the other group, who had walked less than 3,000 a day.
Onwards and Upwards
I'm slightly encouraged by the benefits of 5000 steps, Iam64, having not got into good habits yet since my pedometer arrived. 10000 is a distant horizon. I managed just over 5000 on Tuesday, but yesterday was a write off as I was looking after DGS2, who's not quite walking yet. I'd planned a good long hike to a toddler group with him in the pushchair, but he refused to get in it and I had to carry him to the park instead. I only clocked up 2400 all day
, but as most of these were done whilst lugging the little darling about or bending over to hold his hands, I think I'll double count them!
I got wet 3 times yesterday, achieving my total of 11,258.
Maggie, your days sounds exhausting but fun!
That is good news about 5000 steps, as yesterday my count was 6258, most of which was done whilst out shopping. However I do wonder if I am getting a little fixated, as I found myself walking on the spot whilst cleaning my teeth to up my count - sad/crazy or what!
I do that too, Jam!

Definately allowed to double up Maggie understand the circumstances.
Sad indeed Jam
I didn't put my pedometer on today as I had to attend a funeral.
cari I'm so pleased that you're impressed with your Fitbit Zip, I'm fascinated with mine, love the ease of use and not having to remember to turn it on or do anything with it, it's just there all the time working quietly away!
Only time I've taken mine off is when I spent a few days in Canada last week and I wasn't sure what airport security would say about it. I had visions of being searched and it taken away from me so I left it at home
10,241 for me yesterday. I was doing a test run of GS's journey to work experience next week, involving several buses and walks between stops. Only had the last 1,000 to make up in the evening.
Only 8046 for me yesterday am having to wait in for a delivery today so will need to get a wriggle on over the weekend
7922 yesterday, many torrential downpours today so not very good for today either. My CSX pedometer keeps a seven day record, has a permanent display, calorie count, miles/kilometres covered and would probably make me a cup of tea if I asked it! It isn't as small as the Fitbit so can't fit in the bra but it only cost £16 so that's not bad. Off to do some marching on the spot
Managed to just break the 10,000 threshold Thursday and Friday. Yesterday afternoon the weather cleared up considerably and we were able to walk along the sandy beach at Sandbanks Still in Bournemouth leave tomorrow. Today we are meeting friends for lunch in Blandford Forum, weather a bit iffy so don't know what the walking potential will be.
Encouraging post Iam64, I am sure the benefits of walking are numerous, buying a pedometer has made me much more aware of the importance of moving about more. Some days, for no particular reason, prove to be far more challenging it would be quite easy to slip back to 3,000 days which we all have from time to time.
Only 6684 for me yesterday so not a good couple of days am going to make an effort today ( hopefully)
Well, I barely got over 5000 on Thursday and the same yesterday, despite marching barefoot up and down at DS's for nearly an hour whilst babysitting DGS1 and watching Gogglebox. They've a lovely long living room, so this was very kind on my bunion if not on their lovely comfy thick pile carpet, which is probably now showing signs of a size 7 foot groove
.
It was then that I started to suspect that my new pedometer is not all it's cracked up to be. It's definitely not registering all my steps. I'm off for a yomp into town now to give it one more chance. Otherwise back to Amazon it goes on Monday.
I wish I had a lovely sandy beach to walk along (sigh). I did in my younger days and just didn't appreciate it
.
11064 for me today should have been more but spent large part of the afternoon watching TopHat but did have a dance around the living room .
Not my best week ever. Most days around the 6,000 mark, only one over 10,000 and yesterday I only made it to 2,000 after a totally sleepless night and some wooziness from an early morning flu jab.
Hopefully this week will see an improvement as I'm giving myself a stern talking to!
Sorry you had problems after your flu jab, Versavisa, hope you have recovered.
I managed 12,908 yesterday, and had my usual good Sunday total today with 21,692.
Hope you soon start to feel better Versa and your talking to works! Your Sunday totals are pretty amazing Shysal just about made the 10000 today not sure about tomorrow as I believe rain is forecast but still aiming to achieve a fair number. It's really becoming a habit with me now and am enjoying it ( well mostly )
Have had a run of 3 underachieving days. 9,000 on Saturday, a lot of which were achieved on the beach at Sandbanks whilst the sun was setting. Just a distant memory now I'm back in the rain sodden 'burbs, although to be fair it's probably raining there as well. Due to journey back home only managed 6,500 yesterday and today I will barely scrape 8,000 before I retire to bed. Oh well, as Scarlett O'Hara once said, "Tomorrow is another day!"
10733 for me today and only got soaked twice.
Only managed 5,003 yesterday. Out and about on 'Nanny' duties and rained all day.
Terri, did you choose your favourite house on the seafront at Sandbanks? Rather exclusive isn't it?
I managed 10000 on Saturday, 8500 on Sunday and 9900 yesterday (mostly in the rain), so am definitely getting into this now. Last night I realised at 10 to midnight that I was a few hundred steps short and ran on the spot until my pedometer beat me by resetting itself to zero at midnight, darn it! My DH just watched me as though I'd finally flipped.
I'm just about to watch Saturday's Dr Who while puffing away on my stepper.
