So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Don't have a pedometer, but do use the Runtastic ap on my phone for when I walk the dogs. Usually do one and half miles in an hour every day. Except when it's raining, then there's not a dog in sight, they all hide from me! Bunch of wusses!

I also walk miles when I feed my horses. By the time I've walked down the track to their field, then walked around the field (2 acres) distributing little piles of hay to keep them amused and then walked around again once the barrow is empty of hay to fill it up with horse poo, then walked back up the track with it to the muck heap I reckon that must add at least another mile to the day's tally. And on the odd occasion that I ride, if I have to get off I cannot possible get back on again so have to walk home leading the beast! Only go for short rides these days!

Years ago I asked my doctor to refer me to the NHS Why Weight scheme. He referred me to Why Weight Plus, which is for proper fatties. Cheek!

etheltbags, I had several of the clip-on pedometers, but they either dropped off and got lost or were inaccurate. I therefore decided to spend a bit more on a 3 axes one which goes in a pocket, in a handbag, or around the neck. it suits me perfectly and gives all the information I need, apart from using Kg, not miles.

purpledaffodil I have a Fitbit Zip, costs around £40, I clip mine onto my bra and it syncs with my phone or tablet, keeps a total for the day, the week, the month etc. Easy to use too

Purpledaffodil Mon 06-Oct-14 16:21:23

Thanks for that yogagran. It is the clipping part that bothers me as I have lost several cheapie ones in the past that clipped. I did wonder about the Fitbit that goes on a watch type strap but that is extra pricey. As I have mentioned before I currently pop an iPod mini inside my bra, but today it cancelled itself for some unknown reason. And after I had done lots of selfless walking round the shops toogrin

Thank you for the welcome back and thank you shysal for the flowers. They smell gorgeous!

Sadly I can't give a report on my activity tracker as I haven't got it yet. I found I'd ordered the wrong colour (it's important to me) so it will be Wednesday now before it arrives.

It's the Garmin Vivofit. I liked it for several reasons:

It uses watch batteries which are supposed to last a year. I know from experience that anything that needs charging will need it just as I want to go out.

It's waterproof to 50m so I should be ok in a shower, or the shower.

It also tracks sleep.

It's worn on the wrist, so shouldn't be too vulnerable to being lost.

If you've been inactive for an hour a red bar creeps over the face of it, and you have to be active again to get rid of it. That will be scary, but motivational I hope.

It stores data for 30 days without being synced to the computer, so should be OK for holidays.

Whether it will live up to my expectations, of course, remains to be seen. Watch this space!

Are you sure you don't have to swallow that?!

How long before it finishes up out of the window/bottom of the nearest canal?

In Bournemouth for a week, hampered by bad weather this morning but managed to get up to 11,385 this afternoon after a walk by a rough sea watching a few surfers.

I wear my fitbit the 'wrong way round' in my bra, with the clip on the outside and the bit with the readings on, on the inside. That way, it can't get lost or fall off!

Today I had to walk up to doctors in horrid rain, but had a nice walk late afternoon in drier weather and clocked up 11003.

Inspired by you lot, I bought myself a pedometer and set it up last night. I'm appalled to find I've managed only 1906 steps today. In my defence I've been indoors sorting out our cellar and I've been pretty active most of the day, but in a fairly confined space. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. #mustdobetter

I've a feeling I should have joined in before the weather took a turn for the worse.

shysal Tue 07-Oct-14 07:28:34

Welcome to the club Maggie, hope you have some decent weather sunshine. I did some of my walking in the rain yesterday. DD and 3 GCs are all suffering from a tummy bug. They don't want me to catch it, so we are passing things to and fro through their porch. They fancied some grapes, so I walked to Asda to buy some, about an hour's round trip - got soaked by rain and inconsiderate drivers! Offered to post the grapes one by one through the letter box! I managed a total of 12,379 including an exercise class.

Anya Tue 07-Oct-14 08:28:55

Managed 8000 yesterday but coming down with nasty cold and don't feel like getting up never mind venturing outside.

Welcome Maggie I'm the one that props up the bottom of the steps table most of the time so don't be discouraged by the amazing scores of others, (not that it's a competition).

chloe1984 Tue 07-Oct-14 09:16:13

Welcome maggie good to have you with us certainly no pressure to achieve some days I do some days I don't but feel better for keeping a record. * shysal*do hope your family are feeling a little better soon however I just love the grapes going through the letterbox one by one just the sort of suggestion that would cheer them all up. Anya put your feet up , have a hot drink and watch lots of daytime TV or a box set , hope you feel better soon.

Anya Tue 07-Oct-14 09:36:30

Thank you chloe I'm feeling sad because I'll have to miss my Rock Choir today but can't sing with a sore throat and don't want to pass it on to others.

Shysal I missed your post about the grapes somehow grin

jamsidedown Tue 07-Oct-14 11:41:36

Ooh er, not a very good start - 5593 yesterday which includes keep fit class. Still it did bucket all day yesterday so no walks done. Today won't be much better as, in my defence, I had a French class this morning and off to the cinema this afternoon. Only up to 759 so far today. sad

jamsidedown Tue 07-Oct-14 11:44:55

Oh heck that's not right, I was reading 75.9 kcal oriels burned, it's actually 1697 so far. Must work out how this pedometer works ....

Anya Tue 07-Oct-14 13:17:15

Considering your user name that is very funny!

chloe1984 Tue 07-Oct-14 20:16:33

8773 for me today Anya just love the idea of a rock choir , sounds wonderful.

Purpledaffodil Tue 07-Oct-14 20:45:59

Ooh! 11103 today without noticing it really. Went to see Julius Caesar at the Globe and did lots of walking up and down the South Bank apparently. Culture and exercise. What an excellent combination. smile

jamsidedown Tue 07-Oct-14 23:05:32

Hmm, I knew it wouldn't be that good stepwise today, too much sitting down - but Philip Seymour Hoffman was superb in AWanted Man, what a sad loss. Anyway off to bed and a count of 5820. Must do better.

shysal Tue 07-Oct-14 23:27:24

I just felt lazy today, only did 4925!

TerriBull Wed 08-Oct-14 09:57:26

The sun come out yesterday morning in Bournemouth and we managed a long walk by the sea, Branksome to Sandbanks with a break for coffee overlooking the sandy beach. There and back clocked up 10,000 and my total for the day was 13,600. Quite pleased with that, not sure I will be able to replicate it today a lot of rain clouds around.

LOVE my fitbit zip. Much cheaper than their other products plus it has a display which is something I much prefer as like to keep looking at how I am doing grin

Purpledaffodil Wed 08-Oct-14 19:54:09

Thanks Cari. Interesting there is a good display too. My total today was 000 as I forgot to turn the silly ipod on before I tucked it in my braangry.
TBH I suspect my total would not have been impressive today either as I spent the afternoon doing RE and PSHE with Year 1 class (aaaah!) and was fairly static.
Well done Terribull. Sounds like a very healthy break.

chloe1984 Wed 08-Oct-14 21:01:57

13349 for me today quite pleased but did get rather wet!
