On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits. Plus a few others who make an occasional entrance and departure and that is fine too - All Welcome.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.
Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra. I am sure both Four and Shirley will tell you their strategies.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

So Onward and Downward ? in 2020 and beyond folks. Come and join us.

Hello GNetters, I've been lurking by the door for quite a while and today I'm feeling brave, so here I am.
I've never been a dieter but recently have had some health concerns and realised that I finally need to get a grip and lose some weight - about 12 to 15kg. However I've felt at a complete loss as to how to go about it. Groups don't appeal, nor do fad diets. I've been following this thread and have enjoyed the kind and gentle pace.
So here's what I decided I could manage. Just over 2 weeks ago I started a food diary, just writing down everything I ate in a day and trying to just eat a little less. Curiously, the very process of writing it down has made me much more mindful of exactly what I eat and whether I am hungry or not. I'm just getting on the scales once a week and so far I have lost 1kg both weeks. I'm a bit of a mixture of amazement and disbelief.

Thank you for the encouragement. Welcome to GrannyLaine

Thank you Beechnut

GrannyLaine, I started a food diary at the end of November. I knew I needed to lose about 2 stones and my eating was getting out of control. I keep this little book beside my chair, along with a small calorie book called 'Pocket Calorie Counter' by Carolyn Humphries. I note down everything I eat and weigh myself each morning, recording in my wee book only if there's a weight loss. The reason I don't weigh myself weekly is because if there was a gain, I would lose heart and go back to bad habits again. I've lost just over a stone now on 1500 calories a day.
I always have a wee bar of chocolate every evening! Always...!

GrannyLaine Wed 11-Mar-20 20:10:06

Hi Marelli
Before I started the food diary I was a dreadful snacker and I do have a sweet tooth. I knew I was eating badly. This has really turned things round for me and I can't quite pinpoint why. I'm hopeless with counting calories but my daily treat is a small glass of red wine with dinner.

Marelli Wed 11-Mar-20 20:16:00

We need that treat! We're not punishing ourselves, after all. Slowly but surely, is the way to go. ?

NanKate Thu 12-Mar-20 07:03:21

I too started a food diary which helped me to see exactly what I was eating. It kick started my healthy eating plan. ?

Good morning everyone. Good news of some losses amongst us. Including me - 1lb down. At last, let's see if I can improve or continue with that. Did anyone watch Miriam Margolis' tv programmes as she went into "fatness", public perception, reasons for weight loss, body dysmorphia, boot camp, surgery, looking at young and old. She shared her own unhappiness in being fat all her life, but ended on optimistic thoughts for herself. What a brave woman to show herself so openly and publicly.

NanKate Thu 12-Mar-20 10:54:08

Yes I did Lettice. M M always makes me laugh.

I was worried about the young large people celebrating their size. They are fooling themselves if they don’t ‘wise up’ about the health implications for the future.

Shirleyw Thu 12-Mar-20 19:46:21

I think I had better start a food diary....we are entertaining this weekend so no hope then lol....Good old Monday I shall start food diary....actually, might do me good to write what i shall have at the weekend even though it all wont be healthy.....

Lettice Fri 13-Mar-20 16:08:46

Shirley W don't be scared of writing down your weekend splurge. It's part of life and we are still living even on a diet. Over a week it seems we need to cut down 7000 calories to lose 1 lb. To do that you need to know what you are eating now, in order to see where you can cut and where you an compromise. You need a realistic view of what you are doing before you can do that. We all have splurges, good luck
PS can anyone tell me how to address a user with Bold type.

NanKate Fri 13-Mar-20 16:24:02

Lettice here is how to do it.

Type an asterisk then the name then another asterisk, with no spaces.

Hi,
I'm still hanging out with y'all but have not checked in for a bit. My local swimming pool where I get weighed is closed for maintenance, so today I went to another pool and weighed in there to find I've lost 10lbs in total. That's since January 6th so on average about one pound a week.
I'm pretty sure I would not have lost this weight without your support so Thanks Everyone. I will carry on (reduced carb, no sugar, lots of water, the occasional G'n'T/ glass of wine) and hopefully shift a bit more flab. My jeans are loose round the waist and hitched up with a belt now. I have kept quiet about losing weight but am really hoping my daughter will notice when I get out of jeans and sweatshirts and into shorts and tees. Good luck everyone.

NanKate Sat 14-Mar-20 08:35:20

Well done Cocopops 10lbs that’s brilliant. Keep going.

Yennifer Sat 14-Mar-20 10:47:52

Well done cocopops!

I'm ashamed to admit I went back up to 10.6. Undone 4 pounds of hard work but I've been trying to go gluten free after a lot of stomach problems and haven't been thinking about what I am eating. After I had 2 tummy bugs in a row my tummy was in such a mess. It is much better now and I think a food diary is great and will do that for calories, not just when tummy is upset x

fourormore Sun 15-Mar-20 11:55:06

It's everyone's fault but mine of course! hmmhmmhmm
DH birthday last Tues so I arranged lunch out on Sunday with the added twist of few rellies turning up to surprise him! The wine and food was good but it was his fault for having a birthday! The rellies even brought a cake so it's their fault as well really!
The actual birthday was Tuesday and as he had not received even a card from any of our three AC we were both feeling miffed and had lunch out again. So it's the AC fault as well.
Then add in the virus panic with our PM telling us we're all going to die I just didn't care any more hmmhmmhmmso it's PMs fault as well.
End result a gain of 1.8lbs sadsadsad
Good luck to all my fellow strugglers - hope we're not all feeling fed up! It will pass I'm sure!!!

Whiff Sun 15-Mar-20 12:10:30

Well done Cocopops. Well my weeks of staying the same ended this morning. Up by 0.75lbs. But it's a new week. Not disheartened. Proved to myself than when I reach my goal I can maintain it. Hope no one is panicking about the virus. As that can lead to comfort eating. My worse fault. What annoys me about the news they say how many people have got it and how many died but never how many people got over it or if it will leave them with lasting problems. Anyway here's hoping we all have a good week.

GrannyLaine Sun 15-Mar-20 14:45:20

Sunday is weighing day and I've lost another 1kg. So total loss now is 3kg, food diary is my saving grace. Remembered a lovely MaxMara little black dress I had and passed on to my daughter. I'm beginning to think I might one day be able to wear it again..... fingers crossed

Greymar Sun 15-Mar-20 15:35:13

Afternoon folks, has anybody tried the Second Nature scheme please?

NanKate Sun 15-Mar-20 20:49:43

Fourormore it’s lucky we don’t have a Naughty Step ?

fourormore Sun 15-Mar-20 21:01:10

I'm already on it except it's staircase grin
You do appreciate it's not my fault though don't you!!! hmm

Beechnut Mon 16-Mar-20 06:21:15

At my weigh in this morning I am up 1 1/4 lb so it’s a spell on the NaughterStep for me.

Hope you all do better so I will have to sit there on my own and it will be encouragement.

NfkDumpling Mon 16-Mar-20 06:29:05

Well done GrannyLaine and thank you! I’d forgotten all about keeping a food diary even though its worked for me in the past!

Ive not had much exercise lately and the few pounds I’d lost have crept (well, galloped and barged) back on and brought a couple of mates.

I shall find myself a notebook!

Shirleyw Tue 17-Mar-20 06:14:43

I will be joining you beechnut, I also put on 1 and a quarter lbs.....in my case I got off lightly, thought it would of been a lot more...still, a fresh week, weather looks good so far....this time next week should be a minus figure...

Shirleyw Tue 17-Mar-20 06:16:36

............meant to of wrote, I've updated my Fitbit yesterday, it took absolutely ages, been having problems with it but all sorted now. I like to keep tabs on my steps.
