On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits. Plus a few others who make an occasional entrance and departure and that is fine too - All Welcome.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.
Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra. I am sure both Four and Shirley will tell you their strategies.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

So Onward and Downward ? in 2020 and beyond folks. Come and join us.

Evohal6 it was good of you to point out why you are anti sugar. But do not accuse me of bad manners. I do not bang on a about people going out in the sun because my husband died of skin cancer 16 years ago at the age of 47. And no he was not a sun worshiper. Also your husband's cardiologist should have advised low fat Greek yogurt as mine has done. Oh and by the way I have lost over 7 stone of timber as you call it by dieting and exercise. I did this before it was found I had heart problems.

Evoha16 Sun 05-Apr-20 17:58:01

Whiff I’m very sorry that you - in common with many of us - have had trauma and illness in your life. My use of the term ‘timber’ was an attempt to lighten the tone of the post ( it’s L’pool slang) and I apologise if you have found it to be offensive. However I still consider it rude - and take exception to -being told to ‘pack it in’ - I wouldn’t speak to my dog like that! Re your advice re ‘low fat’ yoghurt I will check with our cardiologist first before changing the type we use. Again I wish all posters continued good health in these unsettling times.

Hi everyone,
My daughter left her bathroom scales on her porch for me to collect today. (She says they are accurate).
I saw my grandchildren through the window and we blew kisses to each other smile. Weight loss has slowed down because I haven't been so vigilant. Altogether I have lost 11.8 lbs and have returned to the I weight I was in 1970. Unfortunately I have by no means returned to the same shape! I will battle on in an attempt to shift the muffin top.
Good luck everyone. flowers

Well done Four for losing a pound in these very difficult circumstances.

Evo when I started this thread almost 2 years ago my aim was to be supportive, encouraging and for us all to choose our own way of losing weight without any of us pushing our own eating plans as being the best. This has proved to be very successful as a core of us are still together and generally losing or maintaining weight. We have found that we have a myriad of diets/eating plans. Mine has been calorie counting and now portion control.

I know you are trying to help with your advice, but this is a choose your own way thread.

You are welcome to be here if you too are trying to lose weight like the rest of us.

Finally I want to point out that my 7Up diluted drink is sugar free.

I'm up and down at the moment ... I put on a couple and lose a couple. I need to exercise more now ...I do find my sleep is a lot less due to not walking so much....since lockdown I have halved the daily step requirements some days. ...I easily walked 12000 plus daily but 6000 is the average it appears lately. Yes, Im Busy cleaning and cupboard sorting etc lately like most of us but I'm sure getting out in the fresh air makes us sleep better.....Also, the old 'mid riff ' is thickening a bit more. How are you at keeping fit during these times?

Well done fourormore losing 1 lb.....

Stay safe guys

Fourormore I could have sent you a private message but I want everyone to know what a wonderful woman you are. After reading and replying to your messages. Last night was the first night for a few nights that I didn't have nightmares. I woke this morning feeling like my usual positive self. The feeling of utter loneliness has gone. My first thought was to thank you. And my second a list of things to do each day top of that list get my weight moving again.
Thank you for all you said and hope my replies made sense .

Cocopops that's a brilliant achievement to be back to 1970 weight. At least the clothes are better now a days. Unfortunately having children is wonderful but do terrible things to our bodies and they will never be the same.

NanKate well said. I am glad you are all here and not judgemental.

Shirleyw as my daughter said yesterday everyone is struggling with weight as we aren't doing all the things we usually do. She misses her yoga but with a 2 year old and husband working from home never has a minute to herself. My exercises have gone by the way side at the moment and replaced by attacking the garden . My battle against the loneliness I was feeling. But at least I can see what I have done. Looks like I have giant moles where I have removed old plants. Having bags of compost delivered today. I have to take things slowly due to health problems but it's what I want to do and can always have a nap.

Whiff Mon 06-Apr-20 06:55:18

Pressed the wrong button.

I will finish by saying stay safe everyone it's going to be a few months before our lives return to normal and unfortunately as the figures have told us some families will never be the same. I am glad you are here.

CocoPops Mon 06-Apr-20 07:03:46

Hi Shirleyw I was keeping fit with cycling and swimming but all our pools here closed more than 3 weeks ago because of C19. Now I just take my dog for her walks and yes not sleeping so well as you say.
I really need to summon up the enthusiasm to get into a routine of daily exercise at home before the old joints cease up completely! Have certainly got time to exercise now.

fourormore Mon 06-Apr-20 11:06:44

Thank you Whiff for your lovely words blushblush- it is lovely to be appreciated and to hear it did some good. flowersflowers
We are feeling down/depressed, frustrated, bored, all sorts of adjectives but our main problem I feel is that I don't have control of my life!
I am never at home all day every day - although retired if we don't have childcare, I am ministering through the Church to my two dear old ladies or I will just go for a walk or a browse around my favourite charity shops!
DH has said to me so many time during lockdown 'Can't you sit still?' - The answer is No!
Keep well and safe everyone! We will survive as we will continue to support each other.
PS The loss of the pound is weird!
To be honest I am reading longer in bed and therefore settling down to sleep later. As a result we aren't waking until about 9ish every morning! Real slugs but as DH says - no need to get up, we've only got 12hrs to kill until bedtime! As a result we haven't been eating until 'brunch' so in theory I am missing a meal each day!
Like everyone I am content to basically monitor my weight each week, being careful and aware, but we all have enough to worry and fret over at the moment.
Take care everyone! flowersflowersflowers

3 weeks into finding the new me

5 days since last measurement

Waist - 1cm less Total loss = 10cm
Hips - 1cm less Total loss = 7 cm
Left Thigh - 3cm less Total loss = 3cm
Right thigh - 1cm less Total loss = 1cm

Will do weight next time.

Missing my pilates sessions. Mat is in the corner of the room and I have old DVDs but it's not the same as doing with the others. Not done any for 3 weeks.

So tonight: 6pm - I'm doing a 20 min session with the netball coach and his wife from the local village team curtesy of Village community facebook page, They will be in their garden (sun's out hopefully). I'll be in my living room. 30 sec fast exercise / 30sec rest. He's doing to "go for it" folks. Wife is doing it for the "steady as it goes' folks. That's me.

Thinking of you fourormore. This is my second attempt and it seems to be working as my head is in a totally different place. Lockdown turned me around,

Stay safe everyone smile

Great cm loss Woodmouse. Started doing my exercises today again . Felt better for it.

Shirleyw Wed 08-Apr-20 03:26:42

Yes, cocopops, we daily walk the dog but she is 14 and stops and sniffs a lot more now so it's not a brisk walk these days with her lol.......I got Leslie sansones up on you tube so did her walk aerobics, and did a few light weights so I hope I keep up the routine now I've started, also bought active wear from m&s and pick it up today (as well as a food shop so not going out unnecessarily?)...

That's a good idea with your village community woodmouse.....great measurement loss too.

Stay safe

Whiff Wed 08-Apr-20 06:47:55

Just a check in to see if everyone is ok. And just to say I am doing well no more feeling lonely. Because the weather has been lovely have thrown myself into digging and mastering the art of sit down weeding. When I moved here there was a free standing shower stool. Which I use in the garden. Very strong and comfortable. Must have been giving my neighbours a laugh or they think they have a raving mad woman living next door . As I am saying things why won't you move ,for goodness sake you are only holding on by one root plus many more insane comments. Out there again as it's nice again. Housework can wait for another day. Usually spend a couple of hours out there so have a good work out.

Stay safe everyone. Looks think it's going to be months more before life gets back to normal.

Beechnut Wed 08-Apr-20 07:00:16

It’s good to hear you are feeling better Whiff. Garden work brings satisfaction I find as well as weariness ?

Enjoy your daily ‘sniff the neighbourhood’ Shirleyw. ?

NfkDumpling Wed 08-Apr-20 08:10:21

Just checking in to see how you're all getting on. Very well it seems! I'm just maintaining for now. I'm confined to barracks as DH is on The List, so we're both shielding so very little exercise for me. The garden isn't big enough to have much effect on exercise.

BUT, I've just done the GN workout in the kitchen and, after three weeks of sitting and doing not a lot, feel I've done something! Who knows, I may have worked off and ounce or two!

Shirleyw Fri 10-Apr-20 03:22:26

I'm a bit miffed....official weigh day is Monday but just popped on scales and only lost half a pound maybe another half will be off by monday...considering I'm back with SW and online this time....should be more....oh well.....

Whiff Sun 12-Apr-20 09:16:47

Happy Easter even though it is a strange one this year. Put another pound on. Know exactly what I am doing. Eating to much . But as I am so obsessed with weighting and counting calories I know exactly how many more calories I am eating every day. Just got to stop it. Are well today is the start of another week. Going to try my hardest to control myself. Hope everyone is is fairing better.

Have a good day everyone and stay safe.

fourormore Sun 12-Apr-20 12:22:45

Join the club Whiff I have put on 1.2lb and know exactly why - the biscuits have come back into my life sad!!!
However, I am keeping within my ballpark area - up a little one week, lose a little the next - so as long as it doesn't spiral out of control I'm ok with it.
Shirley remember we are all in the same boat and don't beat yourself up. smile
Keep up the good work fellow strugglers and remember we are in the middle of unprecedented times. Life is not normal and we need to be kind to ourselves. We will get back to normal but in the meantime none of us must beat ourselves up.
Happy Easter everyone and keep safe flowersflowersflowers

Whiff Sun 12-Apr-20 12:50:01

Fourormore wise words as usual. Off to do my exercises. Stay safe everyone.

Beechnut Mon 13-Apr-20 08:48:43

I nearly forgot to do this.
A gain of 3/4lb this week. No excuses. It’s Easter so I bought myself some extra treats and have been scoffing them along with some I was given, and drinking alcohol. I must say I enjoyed them with no guilt.
It’s another start to my week so let’s see how it goes.
Good luck everyone.

fourormore Mon 13-Apr-20 10:47:54

Good for you Beechnut have a treat without accompanying guilt! I was like that last week with the biscuits but today is the start of a new week and the biscuits are banned!
(Well we'll see! ) We do need lifting a bit at the moment so we must not beat ourselves up for the occasional treat.
Once this is over and we get back to even normal day to day exercise - walking to the shops for starters - we can start to focus again.
This is the beginning of week 5 for DH and I as we went into basic house arrest early due to his health. After 4 full weeks of only being able to 'exercise' by going up and down the stairs etc. what can we expect!
Be kind to yourselves everyone! flowersflowersflowers

Whiff Mon 13-Apr-20 11:12:30

My exercise for the day is day 3 of getting a *** rose bush out. Got a third out only took me hour. Having a hot chocolate low cal of course. Enjoying the sun and a lovely wind chime in a neighbours garden. One thing about being in lockdown proves what a resilient bunch we are.

Drink time and back to work. This bush will not defeat me. You shall come out!

Whiff Mon 13-Apr-20 13:44:31

After 2 hours got that rose bush out. That's my exercise for the day. Just resting this afternoon.

NanKate Wed 15-Apr-20 07:48:18

Morning folks.

Sadly I didn’t have any Easter treats this year but I did glug down a bottle of wine with DH. Need to get myself back on those pesky scales.

Keep going.
