On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits. Plus a few others who make an occasional entrance and departure and that is fine too - All Welcome.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.
Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra. I am sure both Four and Shirley will tell you their strategies.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

So Onward and Downward ? in 2020 and beyond folks. Come and join us.

Morning. Had an awful day food wise yesterday. Spent 2 hours in the garden. Then could not stop eating. Worse was I didn't want to stop myself. It was toast and marmalade and cereal. Why I was so destructive I don't know. Anyone else. Doing this? Must control myself better today. Are well onwards and upwards. Keep up the good fight. Stay well everyone.

fourormore Thu 16-Apr-20 11:36:16

We're doing OK Whiff you have been landscape gardening for several hours this week and sometimes our bodies tell us when they need extra fuel. Just like when we feel thirsty it is our body telling us we need hydration.
Yesterday was yesterday - it's gone - today is a new day!
I was concerned about my exercise as we live in a small terraced house and the 'estate' as we call it (out the back) measures about 6' x 4' (yes feet not acres!)
I've compiled myself my exercise list -
Up and down the stairs x 5
Slides down the wall knee exercise x 10
Marching in the spot or around the house Left 1, Left 2 (counting the right foot as the number) to 100 = 200 steps
Stretches up as far as possible and down as far as possible x 5
Twists to left and right x 5
I intend to increase the numbers each week but at the moment I'm finding this is enough and if I push it I will give up. I need to move it or lose it but sensibly!
Good luck everyone - hang on in there - we're doing FINE!!!

Fourormore thank you. As usual you are right. Don't over do the exercise. As my sit fit instructor says if it hurts stop. She was always very hot on warm up routine. Especially the neck. She gave us written instructions. This is for the neck. Sit up straight look to the front slowly turn head to the left back to the centre and then to the right always centralise after each movement. 6 times each side. Next do the same but when you turn your head look down at you pocket for a hold of 3 repeat 6 times each time. It's surprising how it losen up the neck muscles.

fourormore Thu 16-Apr-20 17:50:13

Thanks Whiff for the advice re the neck. I hadn't thought too much about a 'warm up' as such as, although I do focus on doing each exercise, I am moving around the house in between, but, if it starts to hurt I definitely stop!
Initially my staircase plan was 10 times up and down but I soon decided five is plenty!!!
Good advice that I will heed thank you! flowers

NanKate Thu 16-Apr-20 21:31:03

Thanks for sticking with us Whiff even though you have had days. There is something about toast that is comforting but knowing when to stop can be hard for some folk as you have found, but you are back on track well done. ?

It was a lucky day I decided to post on this thread. You are all wonderful. Especially now . I love reading and posting. My husband wouldn't believe it. He loved technology and would have everything with all the bells and whistles. Life and the world has changed so much in 16 years. For the better and worse. But it's how you live your life and how you treat others which is important.

Who would have thought a virus would be devastating the world. When you think about all the wars there have been and still on going , it's something we can't see or touch that is effecting every country. It's not as if you can sign a peace treaty with it. Always said money can not buy health or happiness.

Stay safe everyone. Jam making and gardening today .

Shirleyw Sat 18-Apr-20 04:38:23

That's right Whif , you got it in one...the world doesn't seem so big at the moment.

I've been on a/l this week and the house has had a good Spring clean also got some gardening in so I have kept active and I'm lucky to not be self isolating so we can both go out for our 'daily' walk. I am also a key worker so again Im lucky in respect that I have regular work and it gets me out still.

What I have been doing due to lock down is going to a nearby co op getting bits also the m&s food store at the petrol station and to the farm shop near where I work rather than going to the huge tesco....the farm shop also joined forces with the local butcher and garden centre so they are selling a few top quality meats and plants as well as lovely fresh veg and fruit.

Popped on scales just now, lost 1 and a quarter pounds, weigh in isn't due till Monday but like to keep tabs. As was not good last week ?

Take care, stay safe

Whiff Sat 18-Apr-20 05:39:38

Shirleyw thank you whatever your job is . You are one of the army that puts themselves at risk everyday by going out to work. I don't just mean NHS but all the unsung heroes that we couldn't do without. Farmers, shop workers, drivers doing deliveries, other food producers, refuse collectors etc. There are many many more that without the whole country would grind to a halt. People who we take for granted who's jobs are unseen. My claps every Thursday are for all of them. My son is a HGV driver for Iceland , my nephew works in a meat packing plant and one of my cousin's is a butcher.

I just hope when this is all over those people who have gone out of their way to be extra helpful and kind carry on being the same. But human being are destructive by nature and have selective memories. And some not all will return to type. My hope is all the selfish people who hoarded and flaunted the distance and lockdown rules are ashamed of themselves but they won't . More likely they will pretend to have been as good as gold.

It's alright woke at 5 and for some reason seem in a reflective mood.

Stay safe and healthy .

Morning all. My weight has stayed the same. Thought I would have gain been a struggle all week. Gardening must have helped. Starting today cutting portion sizes. So 40g oats instead of 50g. Only 1 snack but not until late afternoon. Love to go in the garden but bungalow needs a clean , oranges simmering for marmalade, need to make a stew for my next 6 dinners and apples to stew to go with my yogurt.

Stay safe everyone.

fourormore Sun 19-Apr-20 11:35:45

Well done Whiff staying the same is great under the current circumstances. Wow your timetable for today makes me feel tired just reading it!
I have lost 2.6lbs this week but before everyone jumps up and down in excitement it is only the kilo I put on over the past couple of weeks with my binge biscuit sessions
blushblushblush
I am pleased that it's gone obviously but I must keep it up this week. Why is it so easy to put on simply through a binge session, but you're forced to really suffer to get rid of it!
Good luck to everyone this week and whatever we gain or lose - keep safe!!!

fourormore Sun 19-Apr-20 11:39:04

PS Today is SINday so there will be a biscuit or two and some chocolate treats but that is my system!
Tomorrow it'll be back to absolutely no biscuits all week - I can live with that together my my exercise regime provided I have a loss to report next Sunday ... watch this space grin

Whiff Sun 19-Apr-20 12:05:24

Fourormore well done at the weight loss. Celebrate it . It's a strange time we are living through at the moment. Everyone is finding everything a struggle. For me setting myself tasks everyday is getting me through it . Don't want a repeat of the other week. Put my line up today. Once the towels are finished going to peg out. Love washing that has been dried in the sunshine.

Stay safe and well everyone.

Beechnut Mon 20-Apr-20 06:04:43

Well done losers and staying the samers and better luck this week to everyone.

Up and down a bit with weight this week but at the weigh in it was a 3/4lb loss so I mustn’t grumble.

I’m off shopping today and am buying NO biscuits and no alcohol for the rest of this month. I will see about getting my bike out.

NanKate Mon 20-Apr-20 06:39:21

Great that we are keeping going in these very strange and difficult times. I have stayed the same weight which is my aim on maintenance. For my height and age I should be 2 lbs lighter, but I am happy with what I weigh now.

Let’s keep going girls. Onwards and downwards. ?

Whiff Mon 20-Apr-20 16:28:42

Beechnut well done at the loss and NanKate staying the same. All our usual routines are out of wack and will be for a couple more months. As long as we and our loved ones stay well that's the main thing.

Shirleyw Tue 21-Apr-20 03:35:36

Well done guys....yes not easy in the present climate
Lost 2 and a half pounds I'm pleased to say..

whif...I too love a nice line of washing ....can't beat it ?

....

CocoPops Tue 21-Apr-20 03:39:25

Strange to find I have not gained weight after bingeing on hot cross buns and much more. I lost the plot possibly because of some anxiety over C-19 but I'm not sure. Stuck on 135 lbs.
Good luck everyone.

Whiff Tue 21-Apr-20 06:42:06

Shirleyw that's a great loss well done. Cocopops staying the same is an achievement celebrate it. No gardening for me today both legs very painful. Must have over done the digging yesterday. I know better. I was enjoying myself and got carried away. Lesson learnt. Also I will be getting a telling off later from my children.

Stay well friends.

CocoPops Tue 21-Apr-20 07:06:39

Thanks for your encouragement Whiff flowers

WOODMOUSE49 Sat 25-Apr-20 11:51:43

It's been more than a couple of weeks since my last post so I've spent some time this morning catching up with comments.

Well done to everyone and lots of encouragement for the down days. Watch the digging Whiff. As my chiropractor told me "A little and often". That was prior to the hip replacement. I listen to him these days.

Slip ups happen to me too. Four chunks of chocolate last night, Felt really down. Spent an hour watching, chatting and listening to gorgeous daughter celebrating her 50th birthday via ZOOM. She has some lovely friends.

So glad I started recording where the tape measure stops grin. It really helps me.

These are my measurements for past 2 1/2 weeks

Weight = loss 0 Total loss since 13.03.20 = 9 lbs
Waist = loss 2cm Total reduction = 12 cm
Hips = loss 1cm Total reduction = 7 cm

Plan for today, as it's much cooler (Cornwall) is sawing up wood and stacking it in the log store and a long walk through the woods with dog. FaceTime chat with that lovely daughter of mine.

Whiff Sun 26-Apr-20 09:39:40

Woodmouse well with the measurements. My weight has stayed the same. Not through being careful what I am eating must be all the gardening I'm doing.

Hope everyone has a good week .

Whiff Sun 26-Apr-20 09:40:20

Sorry missed out done. Should be well done.

fourormore Sun 26-Apr-20 10:35:49

Sunday morning dawns again - up 1.2 but although I'm a bit disappointed, I'm ok with it as I am staying in my general ballpark area.
This week during lock-down my mission was to weed the filing cabinet. What a nightmare - did we really need to keep old payslips from the 1990s hmm???
The recycling men took a huge bag of shredded paper on Friday - they have another ready to go this week but the job is complete and we now actually have space for more junk important documents.
Carrying out this mission meant I was sat at the kitchen table, literally for hours on end, so that didn't help.
Back into the real world of isolation this week with the housework on the agenda, so hopefully a better outcome next weekend!
Good luck everyone! flowers Keep up the good work those who are losing but MOST importantly flowers Keep safe! flowersflowersflowers

Alima Sun 26-Apr-20 10:58:51

I have been a lurker on your thread for nearly two years now NanKate. It is great to see that you and the gang are growing downwards quite nicely. I couldn’t get into the “zone” for months, just kept whinging and lamenting the fact that I had put nearly three stones on in about 18 months, mostly due to medication.
Don’t know what exactly happened on January 13th this year but I got the kick up the bum I needed. Started Michael Mosley’s Fast 800 with a bit of the 5.2 and 16.8 thrown in. Fourteen weeks down the line I am now 40 and three quarter pounds lighter than when I started. I never thought I would say this but I love vegetables, especially Mediterranean roasted ones. The more colourful the food is the better. Found the Pinch of Nom recipe book a huge help, very colourful recipes in there! Actually enjoying food preparation now too. Don’t mean to crow, just trying to say it is possible to lose weight, if I can do it anyone can, keep going.
The second anniversary of this thread will be my birthday, I am going to celebrate by eating the first chocolate to pass my lips since January 12th. Onwards and downwards!

Whiff Sun 26-Apr-20 12:22:25

Alima what a fantastic achievement. My hats off to you. I know how much this thread is a life line for me and many others.

Fourormore we are all having a hard time weight wise. The only way my weight is staying the same must be the gardening. As usually over my daily calorie allowance by at least 300 cals. It's not naughty food as I don't buy in and anyway can't go anywhere. It's just extra cereal, fruit and must admit toast with my home made lemon marmalade at the moment. Ok it must be the extra toast. Caught me.

Have a wonderful day and week friends.
