On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course from the beginning are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits.

We now have some other excellent new regulars who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Please join us at this difficult time in all our lives with the Pandemic.

So Onward and Downward girls ??

My GP phoned yesterday afternoon with blood test results. Sodium levels are very low. So have to stop taking my anti reflux tablets. Folic acid levels very low putting me on tablets for 3 months. The heart test showed something but the GP who ordered that wants to talk to me about that so booked an appointment 16th April if she wants to speak to me before that she will phone. Got to have another blood test and take in urine sample on Monday morning.

When you are young the only test you want to positive is the pregnancy one when you are trying for a baby. When you are older you hope for positive results so at least it confirms that there is something wrong and then it can be dealt with.

Not worried about my heart as I found out last year I was born with a heart defect. Only took 62 years to find out. The only sign anything is wrong not every day my heart races but only for a few seconds and goes back to normal.

I don't worry about things I have no control over. But knowing the GP wants to talk to me has made me determined to loss the last of the weight I want off.

Hope you are all well and enjoy your day. ?

Good morning everyone. Seems there was a bit of an issue with Gransnet site as only just managed to get on here!
It sounds as though things are on the way to being resolved Whiff ,which is good?. I'm right with with the determination to stick at it. I think there are times when the time is just right but as well as that health can give you a kick start.
I lost a pound this week which I was reasonably happy with. I stuck to diet strictly so I think im still in the mindset of my younger days when you could drop a couple of pounds without blinking!
I know I wanted a motivating start but I think I need to increase my calories now. I have been on just over a thousand. The NHS website says I should be on 1500 to lose one or two pounds a week.
It's good to have a motivating start, and losing 4lb over past 2 weeks has been. I expect there may be no loss next week but feel if I stay at current 1000 theres nowhere to go!
My youngest daughter has also moved back in with me. She moved in with her boyfriend's family before lockdown last November. At the time it was the right decision as she was working in a care home and I hadnt been vaccinated.
Initially it was fine there but being confined to one room with a family she barely knew has affected her mental health badly. Shes now working from home and is part of my bubble. Quite novel having someone in the house!
Shes still with her boyfriend but I made clear its garden visits only etc.
She to struggles with her weight. She felt uncomfortable cooking in someone else's house, and they provided the meals anyway. Unfortunately they were not good from a healthy eating viewpoint.
So she is back in her safe space mentally and feels able to tackle her weight which has undermined her confidence.
It will be beneficial to both of us. For the past month I have been using low calorie ready meals out of sheer convenience. Now there are two of us it will be more interesting to cook, and be nice to have someone else cook tbh!
I think I'm starting to get into a good work pattern now as well.
I have worked p/t since 1995 so to go to 5 days 9-5 has needed a little adjustment.!
Hope you have all had a brilliant week?

Whiff Sun 28-Mar-21 11:02:19

Dorset well done with losing the pound. Glad your daughter is with you. As she wants to lose weight to that's great as you will be able to work out and cook healthy low cal meals from scratch. Which is cheaper and is always nice to cook for more than one person. I still make my whatever soup for my lunches. And my stews last me 6 dinners. The one I am eating at the moment is Quorn chicken pieces plenty of veg with pasta in it. 209 cals per portion. I used to have 40g dry oats cooked on coconut milk but found I wanted a snack about 11. So for the last month .up it to 50g and don't need a snack of a morning. My weight has stayed the same this weight. Which is ok even though I have stuck to my calorie allowance. I allow myself 1200-1250 per day.

Started the folic acid tablets on Friday as soon as they came. Wednesday was the last day I took the anti re flux tablet. Blood test tomorrow and taking in sample. Don't know if I will get the results this week. I suppose it depends on what they show.

Spent 3 hours in the garden yesterday. Had 10 x50l bags of multi purpose compost. Put 5 in the back garden. Moved some rocks using my putting them on the fork and wiggle drag them to where I want them. Planted the new plants. It's been raining heavily over night and still raining. The garden isn't flooded money well spent.

Have a good week everyone ?

fourormore Sun 28-Mar-21 11:03:49

Good news Whiff - like you say we 'oldies' prefer positive results so we know what we are dealing with don't we?

I hope things settle down too for you and your daughter Dorset - what a worrying times some of us are having but hopefully we are on to the final laps now - fingers crossed!

Disappointing loss this week - 0.4 of a pound but it is a loss and the old weight chart does seem to be forming a downward slope. I'm not surprised, as like most of us, things have been going on during the week and I did succumb just a little hmm as was feeling a smidgen sorry for myself.

One little warning for others like me that have been out of the public eye for a while - when we went to a funeral this week it was the first time I had worn 'proper' shoes for a long time and although they had been regularly worn before the pandemic, they rubbed my heels raw! Slippers, socks and/or bare feet indoors for 12 months - then trainers for a bits of walking exercise have obviously allowed the skin to soften a bit! Be warned - I never imagined that would happen as they seemed fine when I put them on!
Good luck everyone as we continue on our quest!!! flowersflowers

Sarahmob Sun 28-Mar-21 11:16:01

Good morning ladies, I had problems getting on too, but I’m here now! What - a - Week, a colleague at school has tested positive for COVID and as she is part of my staff team, I find myself in isolation. I’m fine, vaccine looks like it’s doing it’s job and this mornings lateral flow test was negative so keeping everything crossed. On the plus side I decided to use the gift of these days off work to forge ahead with some planned decorating so Thursday saw me stripping wallpaper, Friday painting and yesterday papering. Going to be putting my kitchen back together today. The downside is that my daughter is now struggling for childcare as I usually look after my grandson on a Monday and Tuesday, but it can’t be helped. Roll on next Sunday when I’m free to roam again.

The plus side of being so busy is that it’s kept me focussed on the task in hand and not food, so I’ve recorded a decent 1 and 3/4lb off this week. This sees me hit the 4 stone marker since I began dieting last July so I’m really chuffed.

Well done on your loss Dorset, I think upping your calorie intake a bit is often useful. It helps to stop your body thinking that you are starving it and putting you into preservation mode. I read somewhere recently that people whose metabolism does this would make excellent cavemen. Maybe that’s what I was in a previous life because this is exactly what I do ?

Hope you all have a good week ?

CocoPops Sun 28-Mar-21 22:03:28

You are all doing so well. I didn't this week because Mr.Will Power went AWOL! I put a pound on so this morning I went for a 2 hour dog walk and forced myself to walk quickly.
The good news is I've got an appointment for my 1st Covid shot tomorrow. That's a good bike ride away which will aid the weight loss. I hope.
Good to hear your Dr. is on the case Whiff and so good that you and your daughter can be a support to each other Dorset. Sarah a loss of 4 stone is absolutely wonderful and calls for new clothes. Yes?
Enjoy your week everyone.

Shirleyw Mon 29-Mar-21 04:02:57

Morning all..,.. well done on losses.....
That pound will soon come off cocoa.....looks like it’s warming up this week so good weather to go out walking.

Lost 2 and a half this week....V. Happy with that. 5 more to go .

We are meeting up with daughter and granddaughters today....been months since last seen each other in the ‘flesh’ so to speak. It’s good to meet up by the lakes as we have a new rescue and it will be the first time they meet, they say she is good with children but one always has to be careful....the girls are used to dogs and pretty sensible.....J will be having lots of fuss and treats today??....
Dosent seem like Easter does it?...good Friday the re homer is coming for a 6 week check....no family will be down ...Easter Sunday I get my 2nd jab .....be just a normal weekend again.....
What are you guys up to over Easter weekend.?

Whiff Tue 30-Mar-21 05:29:27

Four hope your poor feet are feeling better. I only wear trainers in exercise classes. When I am out wear proper shoes or boots flat heels of course. I have to to support my feet . My walking is weird enough . Trouble because as my neurologist says my brain and body are out of sync on a bad day my brain says I am walking in a straight line then realise I am heading towards a wall or towards the road. ??. It's a loss and that's the main thing.

Hopefully with the warmer weather we can get into the garden and it's nice to have the lighter nights.

Cocopops a blip. Hope you had your jab ok and aren't suffering many side effects. I was ok the day I had mine but the next 2 days felt knocked about. But it's better than having Covid . Mind you my daughter said having the jab made her feel worse than when she had Covid. I was just happy she had it. Hopefully my son in law will get his soon. She had hers as there was a spare vaccine going at the Covid clinic she helps out at and everyone working there had had theirs.

All the new clothes are coming into the shops with plenty of bargains. Have fun Sarah getting smaller sizes. I was amazed I have such bright colours now. Why is when I was a 32 thought black would make me look slimmer?.

Shirley well done with the loss. Not far to go too your target. Hope you had a wonderful time with your daughter and granddaughter's.

Got another kidney infection. Had to go to my GPs anyway yesterday a pre arranged blood test and had to take a sample to be sent off. Can phone the urology department today as I haven't heard from them. Hopefully won't have to wait to many months for appointment. Got upset yesterday having another infection. Only 2 weeks since the last one . I am not the sort to feel sorry for myself and hate when I do. But yesterday just made me miss my husband all the more. That's what I love about here I can admit when I am having a weak moment and know you won't judge me for it. I know the antibiotics will kill it but just fed up , definitely think my body is trying to kill me. But one the plus side not had a seizure for a year. Swings and roundabouts.

Can't believe it's Easter this weekend. Not that it will make any difference to me. Just another weekend with probably something good on telly.
Have a good days my friends. ?

Sarahmob Tue 30-Mar-21 12:51:16

Oh Whiff what a rotten time you’re having with these infections, I hope that you soon get your appointment and that the specialist can get to the bottom of what’s causing them. ?
I’m certainly looking forward to doing some shopping once everywhere opens up.

Dorsetcupcake61 Wed 31-Mar-21 07:10:38

Hi Whiff. I hope you get some answers soon as it must be really dragging you down?.
Well done to all those who lost this week.
I had a yung chow rice but otherwise keeping at it!
At least we are having some Spring like weather. Looking forward to Easter. Nothing special happening but looking forward to a long weekend. First time full time in 25 years I find I appreciate a weekend!
Have a lovely rest of the week everyone?

Whiff Wed 31-Mar-21 12:54:05

Sarah and Dorset thank you. Phoned urology department yesterday. I am on the list. Just got to wait for them to contact me for a phone consultation. Then hopefully get some tests done.

Lovely sunny day here. Awaiting Sainsbury's delivery.

If it's nice tomorrow should feel well enough to go in the garden for a bit.

Hope you all have the sunshine.

SuzieHi Thu 01-Apr-21 08:22:22

Just found this forum. I’ve been on the nhs app 12 week plan- currently on week 11, have lost a stone in this period. Very pleased as I’ve never stuck to a diet for so long before. At the end of jan I just took a look in the mirror and thought NO! Had got into eating too much- 3 meals a day, snacks, cake, wine every night.
Started on 1400 cals a day( inc 1 glass of wine). Headache on and off for a week
and hungry! Husband kept saying something wrong with you... so hungry. Had a cuppa soup or apple when hungry. After week 2 ( only lost a lb) decided to go down in cals to 1000/1200 max. Better as the losing just over 1lb every week. Week 4 bought 2 books on Keto recipes. Now eating less than 28g carbohydrate a day ( as Rec for Keto weightloss). Feeling Great! Ps husband a bit moody/ says I’m boring if talking about it! Still making nice food for him and Xmas cake/ biscuits for him in the cupboard. Ignoring him really - but keeping going until ive lost another 7lb then I’ll be same weight as 20 yrs ago Don’t know where my resolve has come from this time....mirror?! Fed up in lockdown?

SuzieHi Thu 01-Apr-21 08:53:39

Oh...forgot to say including one g&t t a night. With slimline tonic Then I just keep drinking the tonic all eve. Seems like a treat

Whiff Thu 01-Apr-21 12:27:00

Suzie brilliant weight loss. Glad you found us. I was so glad when I first joined it. NanKate started a lovely thread. Look forward to reading more about you.

Brought these for my garden. Put another 4x 50l compost on the fromthis morning. Will need to order more compost . Though 10 bags would be enough. Someone switched the sun off today typical lead up to a bank holiday. ?

SuzieHi Thu 01-Apr-21 22:17:11

Thanks- yes good thread. Will enjoy getting to know you all. I’m a keen gardener too- spent 4 hours out there this pm! First hour in the greenhouse as it was a bit chilly and blustery at first. Evening sun here though - nice

Shirleyw Fri 02-Apr-21 05:38:19

Happy Good Friday, dosent seem like Easter...my visiting family in garden arrives Monday so this weekend much the same as any other day lol...Im on annual leave this fortnight. Its rather lovely just staying home, been pottering around, sorting out winter clothes to go in loft and bring down summer clothes. Have a load to go to clothes bank.

Hi Suzie, your doing great. I have the 12 week NHS better health app...calorie counting is the way to go for me plus lowish carbs...I too like a little tipple...i used to drink wine but i always wanted something sweet to eat so i now have measured out bacardi (25ml 58 cals) and diet coke or 25ml brandy on ice for weekends.

Weather getting chillier again but least its kept dry. Hvae a good Easter break

Dorsetcupcake61 Fri 02-Apr-21 09:16:57

Hi everyone and welcome Suzie. Thought I'd just pop in as no work today due to BH,yayyy?.
I love your garden elephants Whiff. ?. I hope you are feeling a little better and the medical appointments happen quickly. I have a liver ultrasound next friday due to my self inflicted increase in fatty liver! I did try and rebook initially as had appointments in the morning. I wasn't able to as all booked up for foreseeable. So off I will go ,have rebooked
appointments.
I have been sticking to my calories and I'm very careful weighing things out etc. I was a bit disappointed to step on scales this morning and find I had put a pound on! Its not my weigh in day until Sunday so hopefully things change.
Maybe it's because I started off on quite low calories? I must admit I find it quite hard to get over 1100! I will keep on keeping on?. One thing I have definitely noticed is my stomach feels massively less bloated. I bought some leggings online earlier in the year which were just that bit to snug, now they are fine!
There was an interesting programme on Channel 5 this week,or maybe channel 4. Why cant I lose weight? Which provided food for thought, pardon the pun?.
Well the sun is shining here although a bit chilly, and strange talk of wintry showers?. I hope you all have a lovely few days?

Sarahmob Sun 04-Apr-21 07:22:43

Good morning all, Welcome and well done Suzie. I’m excited about today as my 10 day self-isolation period is over and I’m finally free to go outside and meet everyone. The sun is shining here this morning and we’re planning to drive to the beach for a long walk later on. Looking forward to the fresh air after being cooped up all week.
1/2lb loss this week which is ok (better than nothing) and the scales are inching towards my target. I’m now the same weight I was when I was 20 which is the lightest I’ve been in my adult life so really proud of myself.
I’ve been reading a really interesting book this week about retraining your appetite in preparation for the point at which I want to start maintaining my weight.
Hoping you all have a great week and enjoy the bank holiday.

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 04-Apr-21 09:33:51

Happy Easter everyone???.
Well done Sarahmob both with loss and freedom. Wishing you a lovely walk in the sunshine ♥️.
I have put on 2lb?. I think for the first time in my dieting life I am quite non plussed. Yes I had a chinese rice. Last night my daughter cooked a nice meal that I didnt calorie count but wasnt indulgent.?.
It was almost tempted not to write on here and to ignore weight gain in diary. Instead I have added it and also just to be sure recalculated my calories on NHS website. I should be on 1517-1950 a day, sticking to lower end of want to lose 1-2lb a week. I have a diet journal and tbh most days have struggled to get up to 1500 and certainly never reached top end.
So would have assumed to stay same not put on 2lb!
There are only 2 explanations. When I seriously returned to dieting I kick started with VLC at most a 1000 a day. Looking back to mid March I have still lost 3.5lb. Maybe it's a reaction to VLC maybe need to do for longer than a week. I also have been eating mainly prepared foods which may have caused some water retention?
Either way onwards and hopefully downwards after a bit of a reorganisation of what eating hopefully helps!

NanKate Sun 04-Apr-21 10:35:13

Hi Girls,

Thought you would like to know that if any of you fancy some chocolate ? today you have permission to indulge. I’m tossing up what I am going to have today and when. However back on the wagon tomorrow for me.

Have a good Easter day folks. ????

Gwiz5 Sun 04-Apr-21 11:12:22

I’ve been on a journey of self health and since 28/06/2020 I’ve lost 3 stones 10lbs and gone from a size 16 to a 12 ( still a 14 on top if there are buttons involved though ?)

I exercise daily using weights and my x trainer for those days I am not able to get outside and walk my 11-1500k steps ( this I do at weekends often 20k steps )

I’m 52, 5’0- menopausal and started this journey after being very ill with covid bed bound for 4 months and already ‘ chubby’ - the inactivity led to my gaining another 18lbs. My start weight was 13:6lbs my current weight is 9 stone 10lbs.

I’m calorie counting , not a member of any of the usual groups as I don’t agree with the restrictive programs. I use the nutracheck app to track my daily intake.

I’m fitter and healthier than I’ve been in a while. I’m still in the overweight category mostly due to my height ( or rather the lack of it !)

I’ve got a way to go as far as toning and reducing body fat and I’m loving the weight training. I’ll see what I look and feel like when (if) I get to 9 stone.

I’m proof that if you want it and are patient then it comes big you have to work hard and stay on track be true to yourself and own your goals.

fourormore Sun 04-Apr-21 12:19:56

Welcome Gwiz5 you will love our group as we all support and encourage each other through the ups and downs!

I'm happy to have lost a pound this week - although I am getting out for short walks these days I know I am not doing nearly the same amount of exercise as 'normal' so don't expect miracles. As long as I don't gain I'm happy and losing about a pound a week will do me for now!

Thanks for the permission to 'sin' NanKate - guess who will get all the blame next weekend!!! gringringrin

Happy Easter Everyone flowersflowersflowersflowersflowersflowers

Whiff Sun 04-Apr-21 15:16:26

Happy Easter everyone. Ahead of you there NanKate my grandson's brought me a small Lindt bunny had that with my breakfast. I can't leave chocolate alone . The oldest made me an Easter card from him and his brother. Really enjoy it guilt free.

Sarah well done with the weight loss and your freedom. Hope you have a wonderful time on the beach with your family. Wonderful to be the same weight your where at 20.

Dorset it's a blip. I try to have 1200 cals a day and I loss weight . But lately it's been 1300-1350 so my weight has stayed the same but I am ok with that. But will keep trying to have 1200 a day. Good news about your liver ultrasound. After I had jaundice I was told I had a fatty liver but they wasn't concerned about it. Luckily I haven't any lasting liver damage from the jaundice.

Four well done with your weight loss. I have spent 2 hours on the garden moving big rocks using my garden fork and wiggle method. My daughter put the step counter on my phone with all the walking moving the rocks my step count is only 419 for the day so far. Yesterday just cleaning the bungalow I did 915. How's that work!!!!!!???

Gwiz5 welcome the pears are a great bunch. Brilliant weight and size loss. I started my weight loss journey April 2017 . Counting calories has been my way to loss weight was over 19st and a size 32 when I started now a size 16. Want to get to 11st. But haven't set a time limit to reach it. One day I will. Love the new me as you must. I found out I love bright colours and patterns. And much to my surprise thanks to my wonderful daughter wear trousers daily. Trouble is I know I am smaller but still see the obese woman I was. She got me to try new things. I have a lovely Seasalt dress I love. Brought it before Christmas 2019 first dress since my wedding dress. Look forward to your posts. ????

Shirleyw Mon 05-Apr-21 03:51:01

Morning....up 2lb, no excuses lol......*sarahmob*, what book are you reading on maintaining ? As I’m just about there, another half a stone . I’M working out in my head when I start to maintain how and what I’m going to eat....not going to be easy..

NanKate Mon 05-Apr-21 04:08:16

Morning another one who can’t sleep !

I agree learning to maintain weight is as hard as losing weight IMO.
