On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

As Whiff so wisely says losing weight is ‘a marathon not a sprint’.

I was tossing up whether to fit in a short walk this morning, well after my coffee and NO biscuit I’m off 🏃‍♀️

It’s been a lifelong struggle for me but at 74 I still think it’s worth it.
Don’t be disheartened Shinamae. Just keep on keeping on.

I've read the small changes are best, gradually reducing portion sizes, sugar and drinking lots of water

So I'm just doing that this time

Im afraid following a few meals out last week I have put on 2lbs since my last weigh in but at least I have faced the music. I have done lots of walking and have also been listening to some very interesting videos on You Tube regarding sugar addiction & how sugar affects the dopamine in our brains making us want more & more. I suppose that is why it’s so hard to just have a little treat without it turning into a full on binge. Eating too much sugar & starch can also cause inflammation throughout our bodies so even more reason to give it up.

I shall make pancakes tomorrow and then I will do my best to cut out the sweet stuff. Raspberries are on offer in our local supermarket so I will stock up & try snacking on those. I’m off to Scotland on Wednesday for a short break so I dare say temptation will be all around. Nothing wrong with a good Scottish breakfast though, I will leave off the toast & fried bread. Have a great week all, and good luck Violet, you’re right just small changes can make a big difference.

Did my sauna last night. And did a 12 hour food fast. Can’t do a food/ tea, coffee fast as I have to drive somewhere this morning and can’t do it without a cuppa. I just hope I can continue when I’m back home at the end of the week. Still not getting any exercise, though.

TillyTrotter Tue 21-Feb-23 09:59:35

I try to visualise the things I am going to need to cut out (like sugar and roast potatoes) and name them ‘Ugly food ‘.
Then if offered any I can say “No thanks, it’s ugly food”.
A mind trick but it works for me most of the time.

silverlining48 Tue 21-Feb-23 15:45:32

You might want to call cheese and bread ugly too Tiggy. Cakes etc too of course but a roast pot or jacket is ok if you use one spray. This is what I learned from slimming world. Managed to lose and keep nearly 2 stones off for 10 years but have let things go and need to reign it in fir now as its suddenly creeping back.
up and down we go smile

TillyTrotter Tue 21-Feb-23 17:24:08

10 years is such an achievement silverlining
It has to be full commitment or if we stray too far from the healthy meals /no snacks it seems hellish to have to get back on track.
It is worth keeping on ‘though.

silverlining48 Tue 21-Feb-23 17:38:16

I am still filling in my weight weekly in my old SW booklet but am on the last page now. I ts seen me through the last 10 years so no complaints.
I weigh every day which just gives me a heads up if I have gained but only fill the book in weekly, yes I am disappointed that after 10 years it’s creeping back on.

MayBee70 Wed 22-Feb-23 10:13:39

I cant remember how long I fasted for but it was definitely 12 + hours. I’m sleeping really well at my daughters and when I ‘m not tired I eat less. Didn’t do my sauna last night but going to do it now. I have definitely lost some weight.

VioletSky Thu 23-Feb-23 16:23:20

First progress! Still making small changes.

Lunch is premade 5 days a week so packing myself a smaller lunch.

Smaller portions of dinner, think 1 less roast potato.

I never eat breakfast but having my morning coffee black.

Snacks, just 2 biscuits instead of 3 or 4 or 7 lol

Trying to do a bit more exercise that doesn't feel like a routine chore, just taking different routes to walk places, might try and get in some yoga at the weekends soon.

MayBee70 Fri 24-Feb-23 21:19:33

Think I’ve ate too much today. Ate a couple of biscuits this afternoon. And I didn’t stick to my fast last night. Going home tonight but hope I can stick to eating healthily. Can’t do my sauna at home at the moment but planning to start going to the gym on Monday. I’ve got rolls of fat round my waist. I’ve always been a hips and thighs person and usually manage to keep the weight off my waist so this isn’t good. I must stop having sugar in coffee. I can actually drink coffee without sugar so I often wonder why I do put sugar in it. And I’m going to try to cut out bread next week, too.

VioletSky Fri 24-Feb-23 22:01:58

When I quit sugar in tea and coffee input the sugar pot in a cupboard

After years and years of making hot drinks I would be on autopilot otherwise

NanKate Fri 24-Feb-23 22:13:24

Something that has helped me is that I have most things that I want but in smaller quantities.

The way I stopped having sugar in my tea, was by cutting it down to half a spoonful, once I got used to that I then had a quarter of a spoonful and finally no sugar.

I always now have a half or third of an individual cake and DH finishes it off.

Shirleyw Sun 26-Feb-23 02:58:41

1 and a half pounds off this week I’m pleased to say. Onwards and downwards…..
Umm, that’s a nice way of cutting the cals nankate, you seem to have good control…it’s thinking before eating isn’t it?…..I have shared desserts in restaurants with d/h….only for appearances though, don’t want to look greedy 😅

Getting chillier again but good it’s staying lighter longer. Have a good week guys.

NanKate Sun 26-Feb-23 07:28:48

I wish ShirleyW I had control ALL the time. It’s so easy to slip back into old ways.

Well done for losing 👍

luckyrose62 Sun 26-Feb-23 09:19:51

At the moment our county council is offering slimming world free for 12 weeks I have been accepted and I have stuck to it this week but time will tell I needed to be able to be weighed each week. I would prefer the Rosemary Conley recipes it is now called GetSlim if you go to NHS site there is a code so it’s only £4 per month instead of £13 I would rather have smaller meals than masses of sw foods that I don’t enjoy as much. As long as we do something even if we yo-yo occasionally 😊

fourormore Sun 26-Feb-23 11:33:36

Well done fellow strugglers for hanging on in there - that's the secret for us all - never give up.
Oh boy - how tempting it is at times to give up! smilesmile
After a few disappointing weeks I am delighted to report a loss of 1.8lb. Shame - why couldn't it have dropped one more little notch - but it's never enough when we lose is it!
Out to lunch today at GCs invitation so will probably eat more than I should but Sunday is my Sinday so I'm allowed!!!
Good luck everyone as we all plod on together!

Whiff Sun 26-Feb-23 11:49:27

Shirley well down with the loss. Wednesday I was a pound down but only count Sunday's weigh in so still the same weight as the last 3 weeks at least it's not a gain.

NanKate my parents never had sugar in tea so never gave my brother and me sugar in our tea. But my nan had 3 sugars and half of the cup was full fat milk. Everything was cooked in lard and always butter. She lived until she was 89.

I used to love milk chocolate but found at Christmas I found it to sweet and like plain especially 70% . Which of course is higher in cals but because of the bitterness can't eat a whole bar like I could with milk choc. Swings and roundabouts.

Exercise class tomorrow. Started on the increase of my tablet Wednesday but so far no improvement in my stiffen limbs. But it took 2 weeks when I first went on it to stop the limb jerks and siezures. On this dosage for 2 weeks then up to the dosage that I will stay on. Hopefully by then I wouldn't be walking like I have planks attached to my legs.

Luckyrose never liked the idea of slimming world to faddy. But if it gives you a boost then it's a good thing. I found I could make lower cal meals than by following recipes. When I make a cheese sauce to go on a lasagne made with Quorn mince and veg that will last me it 6 dinners I used 50-60g cheddar ,milk and 30g of flour but no spread there is enough fat in the cheese to make a good sauce if you put all ingredients into a pain and use a whisk . No one has ever noticed the difference between my sauce with spread or one with. The lasagne I am eating for my dinner tonight is only 257 cals. I only just 4 sheets of pasta . 2 put across and 2 down .

Hope you have a loss at weight in luckyrose.

Have a good week fruits 🙂

Whiff Sun 26-Feb-23 11:51:30

Four we crossed posts well done with the loss. Enjoy your sinday lunch with the grandchildren. Hope you have a yummy pud after.

Shinamae Sun 26-Feb-23 11:52:51

After a few disappointing weeks, I have lost 2lbs this week..🤗

silverlining48 Sun 26-Feb-23 14:24:47

Well done Shinamae, a good loss. I was up and down but on a downward trend at present. Nothing much, but better than increasing. Carry on carrying on.

.

VioletSky Sun 26-Feb-23 14:31:59

I'm another pound down but that might not stick because the weekend and being in close proximity to the kitchen does me no favours! Will see what next week brings

Well done all

Whiff Sun 26-Feb-23 14:39:16

Shinama good loss. Hope for the rest of us.

TillyTrotter Sun 26-Feb-23 17:00:32

I am teetering on the 10 stone mark and will aim to get to 9 stone something in the coming weeks.
Wore a dress today which I last wore in December and it felt and looked so much better. This is the reward for abstaining from the snacks I love.
