Wasted school time

This morning the BBC showed a large number of school children aged about 11 singing a song they had learnt to show their support for the football.
So many of these children will have lost months of schooling and have a lot of catching up to do before they break up for the summer holidays.
It smacks of indoctrination to me that nothing is regarded as more important than football. Not all children are sport fans including one of my grandsons who would have been bored and resentful if he was forced to take part in such a waste of time and effort.

Are you sure about that?!?

It worries me too that so many children will almst feel like the world round them will disintegrate if England does not win...
it is not healthy.

Wrong on every level, primary schools use lots of international sporting events as a tool to educate the children on different cultures and customs alongside the national curriculum.

I dont think my DGC will find that their world disintegrates if England doesnt win.

Oh! Just remembered, not all are English grin
They have half Danish friends too.

I'm 100% sure that tomorrow morning children in junior schools all over the land will not be feeling distressed if England has lost. Their world does not fall apart, they just move on. The children will be more interested in what is being served up for lunch.

My granddaughter's class has just had a fun day. Outdoor games, ice cream, a visit from farm animals, bubble machines.
The school as a whole had been brilliant dealing with the children's mental health, I can't fault them. They also do their normal lessons but there has been plenty of light relief. Lots of singing and dancing too.

Having taught in schools when England defeats were common I can assure you children just take it in their stride (sometimes much better than their fathers do) and get on with things.

I think younger ones are more upset that parents won't be allowed to their sports days.

It’s becoming glaringly obvious that you don’t know English schoolchildren as much as you like to think you do.

Callistemon Wed 07-Jul-21 21:42:06

Ha ha - my English DD is watching the match with her Danish friend!
?

Callistemon Wed 07-Jul-21 21:44:05

Ps they are not school children.

Some people like to cause division where none exists.

Some people like to cause division where none exists.

Don't they just. I refer to my post earlier today @ 15.47. When I posted it, I'd meant it to be tongue in cheek and really didn't think anyone would seriously do it. Wrong!! gringrin

Sorry can I just clear something up ? Did this all start because somebody saw some schoolchildren singing a song? Possibly sweet Caroline ? And thought they should have been hard at work catching up on some random maths or English target ?

How did we get then to this sort of comment “ It is great to support your home team, yes, but when it come to sheer nationalism, bordering on 'hating the opposition' - then no, it is NOT the school's role at all.”

Really ??

Ellianne Wed 07-Jul-21 22:43:05

So now all the excitement is over, here's the answer to Kali's question What would be wrong about learning about the other team's country? ie Denmark's.
In Key Stage 2 History this is one of the components: Viking raids and invasion, Danegeld. Plenty of material already here to learn about Denmark in the curriculum.

Pretty much yes Lucca! Bonkers isn't it? grin It's been a gift for the Society of the Perpetually Outraged!

Lucca Wed 07-Jul-21 22:45:15

No doubt somebody will be along soon to complain that they missed some tv programme or other because of the semi final where England won.
Gareth Southgate for PM !

Callistemon Wed 07-Jul-21 22:47:58

I don't know how children singing a song in support of England's football team had anything whatsoever to do with hate and nationalism either.

Nor indoctrination.

Apparently it was sung at Gareth Trippier's old school - I expect they are very proud of their ex-pupil.

Chewbacca Wed 07-Jul-21 22:48:47

Gareth Southgate for PM!

Hang on Lucca, they're looking for a Head of State on another thread; can't you send him there?

MerylStreep Wed 07-Jul-21 22:51:15

some people could start an argument in an empty room.

Callistemon Wed 07-Jul-21 22:52:02

They sang Sweet Caroline.

Not Land of Hope and Glory, I Vow to Thee My Country or Rule Britannia!

Callistemon Wed 07-Jul-21 22:57:34

Who? Me?
Never.

Why do sports fans sing Sweet Caroline anyway? It 's not just football fans

rafichagran Wed 07-Jul-21 23:06:07

Lovely to see the children singing and having fun.
It's about being proud of the England team and showing support, it is only a small part of their day, and this type of event is not all the time.
Please dont be miserable and begrudging, the children have had a bad year too so let them have a bit of fun and show pride into the England football team.

Chewbacca Wed 07-Jul-21 23:06:23

Dunno but it's better than ENGERLAND! ENGERLAND or Ferry Cross the Mersey!
