I've often wondered how much religion plays a part in estrangement.

I was 'raised' Christian and hated IT. The hypocrisy that I saw in that community was appalling to Me even as a minor child... Add the double-standards of my home environment, all these "rules"/ideals existed in principle but the only one following them/MADE to follow them and faced consequences for NOT following those "rules" was ME. Oh and a few 'fellow goats'... A group/community/'family' doesn't need many from my experience and reality -- just enough to make others' "fall into line" lest they become a 'goat' as well.

Here's a list, compiled by an EP of Biblical quotes:

Proverbs 1:8 My child, listen when your father corrects you. Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.

Proverbs 6:20 My son, obey your father’s commands, and don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.

Proverbs 10:1 The proverbs of Solomon: A wise child brings joy to a father; a foolish child brings grief to a mother.

Proverbs 15:20 Sensible children bring joy to their father; foolish children despise their mother.

Proverbs 19:26 Children who mistreat their father or chase away their mother are an embarrassment and a public disgrace.

Proverbs 20:20 If you insult your father or mother, your light will be snuffed out in total darkness.

Proverbs 23:22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.

Proverbs 23:25 So give your father and mother joy! May she who gave you birth be happy.

Proverbs 28:24 Anyone who steals from his father and mother and says, “What’s wrong with that?” is no better than a murderer.

Proverbs 30:11 Some people curse their father and do not thank their mother.

Proverbs 30:17 The eye that mocks a father and despises a mother’s instructions will be plucked out by ravens of the valley and eaten by vultures.

And this is why I'm a Jedi.

Discussing religion and pushing it are clearly two different things-

I've a sibling that pushed/peddled their practice- At family gatherings, their default response in conversations was "Praise the Lord-" My other sibling was finally like, "Enough!"

Meatballs went a flyin' ..

They used their practice to troll family dinners full well knowing it would end in children hiding under tables, babies screamimg, people retrieving their children that had the bejesus scared out of them and leaving-

Even the troll's children, little as they were, asked them to please stop saying it- They did not stop-

Because it's "what God wants .."

Have you a better design?

Smileless2012 Fri 03-Jul-20 19:48:26

But that isn't what God wants rosecarmel.

Madgran77 Fri 03-Jul-20 19:48:31

Madgran I'm a real genuine person all the time, just like you.

Was I suggesting that you weren't? I am not sure where that might have been, and was not my intention!

Starblaze Fri 03-Jul-20 19:49:10

Yes, titanium

? So you know too, huh?

Smileless2012 Fri 03-Jul-20 19:50:19

Yes I do. I've known him all my life; what's your point?

Madgran77 Fri 03-Jul-20 19:52:25

Nothing has read as pushy to me. Someone with strong beliefs and faith will describe those clearly and someone who may not have the same beliefs and faith may interpret that as pushy when that is far from the intention.

Chewbacca Fri 03-Jul-20 19:53:40

Your sibling sound more like a despot than a believer of a religion rosecarmel! I've not come across any one like that.

Madgran77 Fri 03-Jul-20 19:53:51

Yes, titanium

confused !

Smileless2012 Fri 03-Jul-20 19:54:56

Absolutely Madgran just as someone disparaging another's beliefs and explaining why they don't believe can be interpreted as pushy.

Starblaze Fri 03-Jul-20 19:56:37

Parachute jump, paragliding and swimming with sharks?

Nope. I quit.

Smileless2012 Fri 03-Jul-20 20:01:12

Yep, that's life down under for you. I nearly died when I saw a photo of someone swimming with whale sharks; I had no idea how huge they areshock.

Motherofdragons Fri 03-Jul-20 20:02:53

Madgran I agree with you that Skye came across as thoughtful and kind, however, I did think her initial post was spam when I first read it.

Motherofdragons Fri 03-Jul-20 20:04:16

I’ve swam with Whale Sharks. It was an incredible experience. They are such gentle giants.

Madgran77 Fri 03-Jul-20 20:07:50

Starblaze I truly cannot see how you can interpret this discussion as "swimming with sharks"! However,iIf that is your interpretation then so be it!

As far as I can see, there has been completely genuine expressions of differing views, ranging from non believers to very strong believers and many in between. There have been people detailing their faith, others not saying. Several, including myself, giving views on what part religion might play in estrangement in reply to the OPs original question, from their perspective.

What part was "swimming with sharks" as opposed to "friendly interesting debating of differing views?"

That's a genuine question but as you have quit I don't suppose I will get an answer

Starblaze Fri 03-Jul-20 20:08:46

MoD lol spam

Starblaze Fri 03-Jul-20 20:09:52

Madgran erm....

No actually, someone else can untangle that one.

Motherofdragons Fri 03-Jul-20 20:12:19

Madgran - Starblaze was responding to Smileless saying that her son did a parachute jump, paraglided and swam with sharks!

Smileless2012 Fri 03-Jul-20 20:13:44

That's what DS said MOD; an unforgetable experience.

Madgran77 Fri 03-Jul-20 20:23:20

Starblaze oh ok, sorry, completely missed Smileless comment on sharks and therefore another example of a misinterpretation!!! [Blush] grin

Smileless2012 Fri 03-Jul-20 20:29:14

Hardly surprising I mean how on earth did we get onto sharks? oops that was meblush.

Starblaze Fri 03-Jul-20 22:10:34

No worries. We are home. Instantly calm again

paddyanne Fri 03-Jul-20 23:49:31

I have lost friends when they became"born again Christians" and became intolerant to life long friends and family who are gay ,amongst other things.Previous to that they had been happy to spend time with my niece and her partner at our home then they would ask if she was invited and refuse to be in the same place as her.I dont have time for that nonsense,if your god is the root of it I dont have time for him/her/it either .Religion is the root of so many wars and terrible things it should be banned

rosecarmel Sat 04-Jul-20 01:42:23

How do you know what God knows?
