We are currently holidaying in France, there is no mustard!
Not even an outrageously priced artisan mustard.
The Leclerc supermarket in Bayeux is enormous, you can furnish your home, equip your garden there but alas no mustard.
Arlette Gondre (Pegasus Bridge cafe) went to England last week to buy French mustard!

I hadn’t spotted the gender. I’m mortified.?

Did you know there's a band from Glasgow called "Colonel Mustard and the Dijon 5".
Weird, what has French mustard got to do with Scotland?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 31-May-22 20:37:27

No way ixion!!! Had to study it to A level, loathed having to do so and have only spoken it since under duress. Ditto Spanish.

Mary Queen of Scots was married to King Francis 11.
She was more French than Scottish, so I expect that's the connection.

I may have to start scooping it back up from the side of the plate!
(haha)

As Mother used to say "That's how Mr Coleman made his fortune!"

My mum used to say that as well!!!

Report from the front line - our organic shop had two jars of moutarde and ortie (nettles) and one with lemon. No plain mustard at all.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 01-Jun-22 08:58:37

All of us ‘in the know’ will now be stockpiling mustard, like loo paper at the start of the pandemic. Though maybe one is a tad more essential than the other.?

J52 Wed 01-Jun-22 09:16:45

Our Local Sainsbugs had loads yesterday, all types. I only bought two jars, one Whole Grain, one Dijon ?.
Yes, The Auld Alliance between Scotland and France dates back to 1295. Drawn up between John Balliol an Philip IV of France, against the aggressive English.

Waitrose now.

Might mustard baths and poultices for when we get “chesty” become a thing of the past? (See thread about things which will die out with this generation of oldies)
Will it be farewell to bread poultices next? ????

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 01-Jun-22 11:23:58

Quick Joseanne, grab them before someone else does!!!

grandtanteJE65 Sat 04-Jun-22 11:44:56

Buy a tin of Coleman's mustard powder and make up you own!
As far as I remember the instructions are on the tin.

If they are not, try 1 tablespoon mustard, 2 tablespoons sugar, a pinch of salt, ditto pepper and as much vinegar and water as needed to make the consistency you want.

Taste it cautiously, and add more sugar, or honey, if it is too sharp.

You can use malt vinegar, or apple cider vinegar, as you please.

Alternatively, you could look in your shops for German mustard - there is no shortage of it here.

I buy a joint of bacon for boiling most weeks and make myself some very inelegant sandwiches which I plaster with mustard. I too saw all the different mustards at a German shop and tried their ready mixed mustard. What a waste of money. So weak.
So I’m making my own again. Using mustard powder. Four pinches of powder in a soup ladle and a few drips of water; made in the morning ready for sandwiches.
The German mustard, supposedly English style, is in fact typically German. Very mild and beautiful for dipping sausage and chips, in.

Powdered mustard is ideal mixed with white pepper and salt, to coat a chicken with before baking. It doesn’t taste like mustard but gives a very nice flavour to skin. Incidentally, try cooking your chicken in the microwave for 8 minutes or so, before putting it in the oven. It seals the chicken, which turns out beautifully moist.
A grandson has used this tip to turn around the fortunes of the pub where he works as a chef. In fact the brat has pinched all my best recipes!

Merde! On fait quoi maintenant? ?

Grantanow Sat 04-Jun-22 12:08:40

It's the Boch again!!!!

Jaxjacky Sat 04-Jun-22 12:12:03

I think Coleman’s English mustard is pretty tame in the last few years, so I buy from other sources.

Bellanonna Sat 04-Jun-22 12:17:19

MtM - maybe only the women like it?
I know I do, and DH doesn’t. They have senape which I think is a bit different.

Copying the thread title from Gransnet daily into

translate.google.com/

then translating to English, then doing a "vice versa swap" Google translate corrects both mistakes,to give

Où est la moutarde ?

though for some unknown reason inserts a space before the question mark. hmm smile

The OP isn't sitting a French exam and despite being a linguist and life long pedant, I still find it a bit rude to pick up on the spelling.
We know exactly what the OP means.

As for mental red pen Maw, we had to use green pens to correct. It was too upsetting for the weans to have work corrected in red pen. wink

I know I'm a total pedant but every time I see the heading I want to change the accent from acute to grave.

Calme-toi. Don't let la moutarde monter au nez!

Actually the gender is a far bigger mistake (feminine) but who cares? We all understand.

grin

And the gender - you can take the teacher out of the school …..
That mental red pen!

Old teachers never retire they just keep on correcting.smile

Jules59 Sat 04-Jun-22 12:51:06

There has been no French mustard In Morrisons locally for months…..
sacre bleu..!!!

I did not comment on what the OP wrote.

I commented on how Google translate had corrected what was posted by a business.
