Oú est le moutarde?

We are currently holidaying in France, there is no mustard!
Not even an outrageously priced artisan mustard.
The Leclerc supermarket in Bayeux is enormous, you can furnish your home, equip your garden there but alas no mustard.
Arlette Gondre (Pegasus Bridge cafe) went to England last week to buy French mustard!

La moutarde de Dijon de Waitrose est vraiment excellente --super forte. Mais ça c'est comme il faut!
En France j'achète le marque Amora Extra Fort. C'est pareil. Mais c'est pas disponible en ce moment. ?
For English mustard I used to buy a type called Gunpowder which really knocked your socks off. Essential for cold roast beef sandwiches. Also it too is no longer available,

hate english mustard but french mustard is a must with steak. hope there's some on the supermarket shelves.

Agree with Germanshepherdsmum, pedant here too particularly with French, there’s also an error with franchises

dumdum Sat 04-Jun-22 13:06:26

* oops I didn’t put that, put francaises

The OP isn't sitting a French exam and despite being a linguist and life long pedant, I still find it a bit rude to pick up on the spelling.
We know exactly what the OP means.

As for mental red pen Maw, we had to use green pens to correct. It was too upsetting for the weans to have work corrected in red pen. wink

I did not comment on what the OP wrote.

I commented on how Google translate had corrected what was posted by a business.

Your name was not mentioned, Stardreamer, please read carefully what I wrote and stop assuming every comment is about you. It was a general comment about picking up on others' spelling or grammar.

However, I am perplexed as to why you have to post about your foray into Google Translate.

The original OP is about the shortage of mustard, nothing else.

Ah, yes. I was thinking it was a Chat thread, but it is a Food thread.

I suppose I just thought it was interesting, so posted about it, thinking that this was a free-roaming Chat thread.

But, as it is a Food thread, it was off-topic, so I apologise.

I’m saddened you are venturing overseas when our homeland is desperately needing visitors to spend money here.
I know it’s a joke writing about lack of mustard but our own folk need is to spend money here.
Ok we do have freedom to holiday anywhere but please support UK businesses.

Maybe if you ask for de la moutarde they will find you some. Le moutard is a kid (child)!

Plenty of people will be holidaying in Britain this year, LovelyLady but that is entirely their choice.
Perhaps many feel they will get better value abroad, say in Spain or Portugal, with the chance of much better weather too, than in 'rip-off Britain'.
And even if everyone did stay here it won't make enough of a difference to the tourist industry until the foreign tourists return, which doesn't look too likely at the moment.
For me, I shall holiday wherever I like, but I'll almost certainly get better value and service in many countries abroad, where the latter is not a dirty word.

I think a fair number of people came here from abroad for the Jubilee. I don’t take holidays any more but live in a popular coastal area so I will do my best to keep local people in employment all year!

Maudi Sat 04-Jun-22 17:22:45

I'm in France at the moment on a lovely campsite nr Royan on the coast, just stocked up at Lidl but never noticed any mustard will look more closely when I shop again. Lots of Brits here in Motorhomes and caravans.

Twig14 Sat 04-Jun-22 18:10:08

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Jun-22 18:17:09

Mamie Sat 04-Jun-22 18:24:54

Not any more. The Colmans factory closed a couple of years ago.

Home from our lovely holiday now.
Whilst away we all spoke French, there were 5 of us, my husband is the only fluent French speaker.
At no point were we criticised or corrected on our French.
The French were so pleased we all tried to converse in their language.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 05-Jun-22 09:49:18

Often easier to speak than to write!

It’s still made in UK, just not in Norfolk. I remember the press at the time - it’s part of Unilever, now made in Burton on Trent, but still actually grown in Norfolk.

Maybe time for a few artisan UK brands to spring up?

Arran mustards are delicious (according to my DH). Our family bring them back from holidays there.

Yes, The Auld Alliance between Scotland and France dates back to 1295. Drawn up between John Balliol an Philip IV of France, against the aggressive English.

Please don't let this turn into another SNP rant yet again against the English.
I live in an area with a huge sign saying last battle on English soil 1745, a lot of the old farmhouses and churches are crenulated and fortified and the area is studied with Bastille houses and Castles.
The English can't be blamed for everything. If the French have run out of mustard let them eat H.P.sauce.
