Bored With Eating

Does anyone else get bored with eating or is it just me??
I cooked dinner tonight, normally my favourite, and just picked at it and ended up throwing it away.
This isn’t a new thing.
I find food boring and is just something I have to do.

Oh Dear !!!!
I never get bored with eating.
Every evening I look forward to my favourite breakfast; Hot rye toast with butter and home-made marmalade.
I have favourite meals in the weekly menu also.

Hunger is the best sauce, as my DM used to say.
I don't enjoy food as much as I once did but if I am hungry and I begin to fry some onions in olive oil and add garlic, red pepper, courgettes, aubergine, tomatoes and boil water for pasta, by the time it's cooked its not boredom I feel. smile

I think that as we get older our taste buds change and they certainly change due to some medications .

I used to spend hours cooking in the kitchen now I can't be bothered .
Poor health since early November means that food , that I enjoyed previously no longer appeals .
Suddenly , I find chicken bland .
Eggs are tempting as they were before .
Sometimes , tea isn't as nice as it used to be . I used to drink so much of it .
My IBS , which was under control before has become more frequent and painful .
Annoyingly , I've become lactose intolerant and that isn't helping .
I can't tolerate nuts either .
I'm about to try gluten free bread .

Food intolerances run in my family and I'm fortunate to have enjoyed food for so many years !

I get bored of eating the same things so I vary it by cooking batches and freezing it.

It sounds like you need some change around meals and eating.

I think if you live alone it can be hard to make a meal that is interesting with only yourself eating it. Do you have a friend who you could exchange meals with sometimes? Once at you and another time at theirs. And perhaps both of you set a task of creating something you don't normally eat. It could be fun as well as companionable? Are there any local supper clubs that are not trying for Michelin star quality?

Your taste buds may be under stimulated. Try adding flavours that excite your palate.....chili, maple syrup, other spices, lots of pepper, dark chocolate, kimchi, etc. Put things together that you might not normally think of. I find getting curious and creative with flavours and ingredients keeps me interested.

This thread reminded me of my grandmother who asserted that to enjoy your food properly as you grew older you needed a small glass of something before your meal. The type of drink wasn't important. If someone gave her a bottle of something she would drink that. As she still ate her "dinner" at lunch time this meant if you called to see her in the morning she would offer you a drink around 11.30. At one point she had a very large bottle of cointreau. She also bought Martini had a couple of glasses then topped up the bottle with brandy.
She lived to be 90 and was still living independently and cooking herself dinners.

I love cooking but my DH has no interest in food at all, he won't eat spicy food so If I want something like curry I have to put his to one side before I add the curry spices, he also doesn't like a lot of pastry so pies are out. I find it really frustrating but I do it because he would be happy to cater for himself but it wouldn't be very nutritious, it sucks the joy out of it a bit 🫤

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with throwing uneaten food away. It would otherwise have been eaten so it’s gone, either way. It’s not always apparent that you won’t eat it all. I have always cleared my plate in the past but recently have found myself starting to eat a meal and then it seems overwhelming and I lose my hunger. This has only been since I had pneumonia my appetite really fluctuates but when I cook it I honestly think I will eat all of it. But sometimes I only get half way through. I don’t cook massive portions either.

Totally agree with you. I was getting so fed up with doughy tasteless bread. I then started to research ultra processed food and to my surprise supermarket bread tops the list. I now go to a small baker who makes seeded sourdough - what a difference and I don’t get that bloating - there is no yeast in sourdough- supposedly the healthiest bread. More expensive of course but worth it.

I still like to eat, but I can't eat as much, neither can O H . and I find food doesn't taste the same, it's maybe an age thing, I do like home made soup, and can eat it any time, also eat lots of salad....something that's easy to make

I live alone and absolutely never get bored with eating.
I enjoy planning my meals to ensure I get plenty of variety . I relish being able to look after myself properly, getting the right nutrients for my body to stay as healthy as possible to serve me well through life.
I don't eat ultra processed foods and enjoy making my meals from scratch to ensure that they are delicious.
We mustn't think we are not worth it.
We absolutely are!

OMG, I wish I was bored with eating but I'm not. I'm 76 and I just LOVE eating. I don't over eat but I jolly well wish I could! Food is yum. Every now and again, with so much slower metabolism, I have to apply a few weeks of small portions, no sugar, green tea and lots of walking & exercise. It keeps me trim enough, but I do miss my usual favourites. We have a grandchild and a widowed son living with us, and my husband has taken over the cooking for us all. No wonder I like eating!! smile

Do you have a friend nearby you can cook for one week and they will cook for you the next? It sparks the interest in producing a good meal and if you cook for 4 as most recipes provide for you have another 2 dinners to freeze.

No can’t say I’m bored with eating, some days I eat more than others, some days I cook, and others I eat snacks and ready meals. I used to find when cooking for a family I’d just not fancy the meal after the time spent making it. Maybe try a few added spices or different cuisines to see if that sparks more interest in food?

If you never feel hungry, and are otherwise fit, try taking twice as much exercise as usual.

It doesn't matter whether you go out for a walk, wash floors or play tennis or swim. Any physical activity should increase your appetite.

If you are bored with eating and or cooking, try buying a completely new cookery book - recipes from another country.

I don't know if this will work, because I love both cooking and eating and have never fathomed the "can't be bother to cook just for myself" attitude, as I am always starving as dinner time approaches.

You either live to eat or eat to live and you join me in the category that eats to live. I'm tired of perusing restaurant menus and finding nothing I really want. Maybe we just haven't found that special something yet. Oh I don't know, if I lived alone I'd survive on Rice Krispies and wholemeal thin toast and marmalade.

I agree that our taste buds aren’t as good when we get older. I enjoy my lunch best. I make a picnic on a plate -salad sandwich, 2slices Marks ham rolled up, 3 cherry tomatoes, small amount of walnuts, 6 large crunchy sweet grapes and a chocolate ginger biscuit with tea to finish? Yum yum! I do get tired of dinner though and sometimes cereal with sliced banana appeals more.

Yes I and my OH both seem to have lost our appetites (since retiring 4 years ago) more so in the last year or so. We do cook, but often feel we cant be bothered and nothing really inspires us foodwise anymore. As for eating out - standards seem to have dropped and prices risen so much higher, we often feel that’s a waste of money now too.

I understand your boredom with eating.I used to enjoy most things but eating alone now my husband has died is tedious. I am using good quality ready meals ,some of them are quite small .I find it helps to eat with a TV programme on so I do not focus solely on the food.

I get like that and when I do I order from a local food prep place who deliver delicious ready made meals they have a range of about300 dishes I pick a week's worth of dinners things Id not usually have and the variety breaks the boredom After a week I'm back to normal
