P.J. Proby - now that's a blast from the past. I remember the name and I'm sure that I liked him, just can't remember what he sang. I seem to remember having some of his songs on my original reel-to-reel tape player which I thought was the greatest thing ever. It was the first time that any of the family had ever heard themselves speak. Wow - how things have progressed in a comparitively short space of time
I was in love with Adam Faith and Dirk Bogarde! Hard to believe now! I think Bogarde turned out to be gay anyway, so he was not available to the mortal woman, and especially not to spotty 14 year old school girls!
I remember seeing PJ Proby at The Tower Grounds in New Brighton in the early sixtie's he had the most amazing voice and was totally underated as a singer, the trouser splitting senario was his downfall at the time as he did not need that tacky sort of publicity to justify his act as he could have gone on to be a lot bigger in the entertainment business with out it.
He started out in the music business singing demo songs for Elvis, to see if Elvis liked and wanted to record them. He used to remind me of a highwayman, with his hair tied back with a bow.
We went on a school trip to the cinema to see A Tale of Two Cities and all cried at the end when Dirk Bogarde died. I read all of his biographies when I got older as well.Thought PJ Proby was dead..must utube him.
...you can disappear for hours into utube, can't you. I've jut dug up Exerpt from a Teenage Opera with Keith West and From the Underworld by The Herd. I'd forgotten how gorgeous Peter Frampton was, but I loved both songs and listened to the radio all the time hoping to hear them.
A thought just crossed my mind when I heard that Paul McCartney was getting married again. I had a friend who was potty about him who declared that she would marry him someday. Other friend remarked that she had a 1 in 30 million chance of this happening as every woman in Britain felt the same (I didn't!). Anyway it just occured to me that in fact her chances were actually 1 in 10 million, or 3 in 30 million .......... !?!?
When we were about eleven my friend and I adored the film actor Richard Todd. He lived in a big house near to where we lived and one day we went on a bike ride to stalk see if we could see him. We waited for ages at the end of his drive and after a while he came striding down towards us with his dog at his heels. We waited just long enough to be sure it was him, and then leapt on our bikes and pedalled off furiously in a total panic!!
Right up to when he died, Richard Todd still had that lovely voice, and he always seemed like a very nice person. We only lived about 27 miles from where he lived, but I never got to stand at the end of his drive!
Mick Jagger, Michael Caine, Ray Davies, Dave Berry, all the 60's groups. Loved going to concerts to see The Rolling Stones, Otis Redding, Ike and Tina Turner, The Pretty Things, Kinks, Dire Straits, Sad Cafe, ELO. Loved Radio Luxenbourg and Radio Caroline.
Gene Pitney was my big crush when in my teens, saw him several times as he toured UK most years. I also loved Scott from the Walker Brothers and David McCallum from the Man from Uncle.
Why has no one mentioned Tommy Steele. He was the very first British rock 'n roller and my particular favourite, although Billy Fury, (bless him) came a close second. I also liked John Leyton in the Great Escape, and he sang a good hit song too.
