What was the first record you bought?

Mine was 'Roulette' by Russ Conway. Not very proud of that!

Weary Blues - Bunk Johnson

An old-time jazz trumpet player from New Orleans, Johnson had been found driving a tractor in the New Iberia rice fields, given a trumpet and a new set of false teeth (I kid you not) and a band to play with. Sort of jazz paleontology...

My second purchase was Tito Gobbi, singing Largo al factotum.

@Petallus Little Red Monkey eh? It featured a new 'thing', the Clavioline, an electronic keyboard that fitted under the piano keyboard - this was progress! It was monophonic, and they became quite popular being seen fitted to pub pianos I recall. I think the record was by Frank Chacksfield.

To know him is to love him by the teddy bears. Followed by Kathys clown.

janeainsworth Fri 26-Oct-12 13:32:05

when I remember the Toggery too, but never bought anything there!

Mine was 'Seven Little Girls - sitting in the back seat'. Not sure who sang it.

That's interesting feetlebaum. I suppose it was the Clavioline that produced that shrieky noise at the very beginning of the track. I remember clearly standing in a record shop and asking for it to be played before I bought it (as one did in those days) and then going hot all over (with fright) when it suddenly came on.

'All I have to do is dream' the Everly Brothers. Still sing along with it and it takes me right back to standing in the living room and pretending that I was performing blush

Charlie Drake's "My Boomerang Won't Come Back" smile

Dad had just bought us a record player and that was my choice. My brother had Lonnie Donegan's "My Old Man's a Dustman".

Ah, memories ................

I agree with most of the above records, but my very first single purchase was a Woolworths cover version of Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, by someone called Paul Rich, and I still have it, in playing condition, and it was bought in 1959! My first LP was Blue Hawaii, by Elvis Presley.

Wasn't "Sitting in the Back Seat" sung by the Vernon Girls? One of them had glasses, and apparently received more fan mail than the rest of the group.
My first record bought with my own money was "Tammy" by Debbie Reynolds - I loved that romantic film!
The poor youth of today don't know what they're missing, those booths (in this case in the Co-op, Stevenage) where many a happy Saturday afternoon could be spent listening to the newest releases. I-tunes can't possibly compare! Technology is wonderful, but I sometimes think we just had more fun! grin

Frankie Vaughan "Green Door".

FlicketyB Fri 26-Oct-12 19:37:59

Red Sails in the Sunset, Tab Hunter, he was fabulous, and as I discovered later gay, ah well I was only about 14.

numberplease Fri 26-Oct-12 21:49:23

Never knew that about Tab Hunter!
I may be wrong, but wasn`t it the Avons who sang Seven Little Girls...?
In complete contrast to my first single (Itsy bitsy teeny weeny) my second one was Harry Secombe singing" God Bless the Prince of Wales".

ninathenana Fri 26-Oct-12 22:54:03

Bits n Pieces by Dave Clark Five. Can't remember where I bought it though

RINKY Sat 27-Oct-12 00:08:39

My first was Brontosaurus Stomp by the Piltdown Men.
Downloaded it a few weeks ago and had a rare old time replaying it for a bit.

Next was Expresso Bongo and Move It by Cliff

Joan Sat 27-Oct-12 06:59:58

It might have been 'Oh Carol' or the Everley's 'Dream'.

'Dianna' has been mentioned: when I was 16, a 14 year old at my judo Club fancied me, so the others kept singing Dianna at me "I'm so young and you're so old, oh Dianna etc etc"

I was in love with Adam Faith, but can't remember his songs now.

I wasnt quite sure what it was called or who by, so her info was as follows...

Cracked Road by Neil Diver....
Somehow she managed to get the right record smile

My dad bought me the first two Beatle LPs for Christmas when I was about eight, I think one was called With the Beatles and also the other LP was the one with the cover that's shot in black and white and features their four heads. Their music was the first I really got into. My parents, having said English pop music before the Beatles was absolutely awful became appreciative of them at the same time, which made a welcome change for me because they only ever played classical from what I can remember. My youngest son now has them along with a lot of my later albums such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Santana, The Doors which I liked when I was a bit more grown up. He reckons they are worth something now, not that he intends to sell them.

Peggy Sue by Buddy Holly

My mum asked us to recommend some records for her 'friend's daughter', as a surprise Christmas present. We were really jealous, as we didn't have a record player, but we suggested the Beatles EP with 'Fool on a Hill', Georgie Fame's 'Bonnie and Clyde', and the Monkees 'Daydream Believer'. Imagine our joy on Christmas morning when we woke to the Monkees record, at full blast! - they were really for us, along with a zipped Dansette record player. To this day, I fill up with emotion whenever I hear that track! Thank you mum!

Nansypansy Sun 28-Oct-12 06:04:37

I didnt really like it, but my nan paid for my first record because she liked it! It was Magic Moments by Perry Como. Oooh that makes me feel old!
