Acid reflux

I have been suffering from this recently. I fear it is due to falling off the low carb wagon and eating too much bread. I was interested to read on the low carb support thread that carbs are thought to cause reflux.
How do others manage this problem? My GP suggested eating little and often (rather than my usual lots and often!) and taking Gaviscon. She thinks the irritating cough I thought was due to blood pressure meds was probably through soreness from the acid.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Annie see my post further up . Sounds as if you have the same as me (gastro oesophageal reflux) The cough is also related as the acid irritates your throat . I have found Gaviscon after every meal or snack helps . Also colperamin from the chemist gives some relief . Prop your bed up at the head end . I sometimes have to sleep sitting up on the sofa too .

I discovered DH hiding the wrappers of dozens of packets of Rennies (he thought I'd blame him for eating too strong curries).I insisted he saw the GP. As suspected -Helicobacter pylori. Treated simply and easily. No more heartburn and gastric reflux. Its always worth testing for.
When I worked with non verbal adults with learning disabilities, if there was an unexplained change in 'challenging behaviour', we always tested for helicobactor. It was amazing how common it was.

Nellie, I cannot take anymore foods out of my diet, I survive on rice cakes , chicken and honey , hence loss of weight

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 10:44:33

f77, I don't get heartburn, don't get pain now from IBS but have a very strict diet , no green veg, no fruit, no bread ,

Now I wonder if not eating from 6pm until 9.30am next morning could be too long and causing more problems.

I long for bread, haven't eaten it for years, but wheat free products always seem to have soya and that's a no no.

I must get this sorted , I am wasting away

Annie, if your diet is so restricted you will be deficient in essential minerals and vitamins. I urge you to get a medical consultation.

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 13:06:08

Harrigan, I have had seven blood tests, doctor expected malnutrition as did I, only deficiency was bit low in vit D and folic acid. I eat a jar of honey a day ! only explanation is I am getting minerals and vitamins from this . I feel so stupid, no, I am stupid , this has been going on since February, I was too embarrassed to join this thread earlier but last night felt desperate . I just seem to have lost the plot this year

Jane10 Sun 15-Oct-17 15:57:09

Anniebach! That doesn't sound good. Can the GP not refer you for a really detailed dietary analysis from someone who could help you to have a more extensive diet?

PamelaJ1 Sun 15-Oct-17 16:06:48

A jar of honey Annie, that will be a jar of sugar then!
Not a good thing IMO.

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 16:17:27

It comforts me Pamela

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 16:27:44

Jane, I asked , a nutritionist telephoned me, talked about genetics ,meant nothing to me, then said just eat what you want to.
I asked locally if there was someone I could consult, one woman contacted me, £70 for a diagnoses, by pendulum!

I must be fair to my GP, I have trouble trusting, some years ago I had severe stomach pains, was treated for stress, IBS, one evening an ulcer popped , so much blood, frightening.

Oh well, I will have to get a grip , seem to have lost all self confidence and trust, sorry all x

Annie how about some complan or protien drinks, don't kow if they would be any good, but may help.

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 16:51:12

I had forgotten about complan, duh, had it for ages after the ulcer burst , thank you, it would be a start , if I had some energy I could try harder to get myself together. Oh I have whinged blush

Jamison Sun 15-Oct-17 17:00:35

No your most certainly not a whingerAnnie, do hope you start to pick up soon.

What about talking to a pharmacist? Sometimes they have very good ideas and maybe able to help you.
I am another who panics if the store of Gaviscon gets too low - the GP knows about it and when I had an endoscopy a few years ago it showed nothing so the surgeon just said to watch what I eat and try and cut out what sets me off - very difficult sometimes when you are out in company - and just now and then I would give anything for fresh crusty bread and jam!

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 18:07:08

Ooooh Welshwife, crusty bread and jam ? Perhaps one day.

Can't ring my pharmacist , she is one of my sisters, things are not good between us, she would be professional but cold

I used to have dreadful acid reflux. However since going on the LCHFdiet it has disappeared. I did relapse on holiday and had fish and chips. Boy, did I regret it. DH always jokes that the shares in Gaviscon must have plummeted since we went low carb.

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 18:09:26

What is the LCHF diet please BB?

TerriBull Sun 15-Oct-17 18:29:11

I'm thinking LCHF, stands for low carbohydrate, high fat diet maybe ? Because carbs, even the healthy ones porridge, bananas seem to give me acid reflux. Bread definitely does.

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 18:42:54

Potato causes me problems and I have just picked up the courage to eat one , gulp

BBbevan Sun 15-Oct-17 19:16:20

* Anniebach* LCHF stands for low carb, high fat. Or asAnya once correctly said healthy fat.So no bread, potatoes, rice etc. But full fat yogurt, butter and cream. There is an excellent LCHF threat on GN under Diet and Exercise. Lots of help on there, support and great recipes.
For supper this evening we had chicken satay and steamed broccoli followed by one square of 85% chocolate. As I said it is very easy to do, no counting calories and no acid reflux.

BBbevan Sun 15-Oct-17 19:17:18

Thread not threat?

Welshwife Sun 15-Oct-17 19:20:49

What about fruit? I love fruit but need to be careful what I eat - apples OK and most peaches, strawberries but citrus is mostly bad and pineapple can be a killer. Melon tends to be good.
How do you manage the 5 portions bit ? We have a lot of veg in soups etc when it is cold and I often mix and steam veg.

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 19:23:56

Good grief, my diet consists of mostly rice and potato , thank you BB , I will, look for the thread now, I long for a return to sleeping through the night and putting on two stone ?

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 19:27:02

Welshwife, don't do the five a day bit, greens trigger IBS and I have always disliked fruit , can't even tolerate the smell of citrus , apples yes I can tolerate but that's it

Jane10 Sun 15-Oct-17 20:00:56

BBevan one square of chocolate! What restraint! shock
