Loo roll shortages/panic buying

I read an article today about how to cleanse ones nether regions in the absence of loo roll due to panic buying. The article suggested that a bottle of water could be directed at the parts to be cleansed but to me, seemed a "hit & miss' solution. In the past and sometimes present I have found it more helpful to keep a small (dedicated) washing up bowl in the bathroom, small enough to fit into the toilet bowl with lid and seat lifted. Fill bowl with warm water, place within the circumference of toilet porcelain and use as one would a bidet. Clean and comfy without recourse to loo roll. Hope this helps if there's a paper crisis on your local area?

As I was told by a health visitor shortly after giving birth, re keeping a lot of stitches clean, ‘Sit on the edge of the bath and give yourself a ‘bidet’ with the shower attachment’. (Assuming you have one. Obviously no good for anyone who’s ditched the bath for a walk in shower.)

Glad to say we have masses of bar soap. Some time ago a BiL visiting the S of France found a trad. olive oil soap factory that sadly was closing, and bought a vast block of the stuff, which was duly cut up with a very sharp knife and spread around the family.
It doesn’t look very nice but lathers up beautifully.

Was in Asda yesterday morning. No large packs of toilet roll, only a few 4 packs of their own brand. I got one as we were getting a little low any way. No hand sanitiser though. They also didn't have they asda brand bake beans, just the smart price ones. I had to buy Heinz! There was a lack of pasta and rice too. Crazy!

I watched the video of the altercation over toilet rolls in Australia and it was unbelievable. Two women had absolutely filled their trolley with multiple packs of toilet rolls. It was stacked sky high and they had emptied the shelf! Another woman came along and removed one pack of toilet tolls which was all she wanted. The first two women went ballistic and a fight ensued. Staff intervened but the 2 women refused to let the woman have a pack. Crazy crazy! What on earth they will do with all the rolls goodness only knows. Rationing will have to come in to protect sensible people who only want one pack.

I think the shops are whipping up the panic buying myth to get us to buy more.

Although I admit to doing a panic buy shop. Cat litter and cat food. Well, if daughter (who is currently looking after my cats while I work abroad) is isolated, my furry babies will still need to eat. Got to get your priorities in order.

She has plenty of loo rolls. I bought hundreds when they were on sale months ago. Currently insulating the pantry wall. Saves on the heating!

People were buying trolley fulls of loo paper in Morrisons on Friday. I went to my local shop yesterday and bought some there. They had plenty They don't charge that much more but for some reason people descend on supermarkets like gannets.
The medical shelves were empty. There have been shortages of ibuprofen for a while and I had to buy a more expensive pack than usual but I did get some. There was no paracetamol.
No one needs a trolley full of toilet paper and they have been very lax in not rationing them.
Their banking system was having problems so the lines to pay were longer than usual so the store had the impression of people preparing for a siege. It is easy to get caught up in it but people should really try to get things in proportion.

I won't go into details but 2 members of my family have severe bowel issues and go through 6 loo rolls a week. I always keep more than most and have added to my stock weekly since December. My drain in the garden serves 6 other households so I wouldn't use newspaper. All three of us have a compromised immunity.

Welcome to our world of washing hands, hand gel, face masks esp in lifts and hospitals. And not going to crowded places.

Here in Australia, there have been huge fights breaking out in the supermarkets. The language is awful, women have been charged. Why oh why does everyone want so much loo paper when 90% is made in this country, is beyond me. One supermarket opened this morning at 11am, the full shelves were emptied within 30mins. Typical media feeding bulls..t to the public.

Agree Ramblingrose especially the Daily Fail??‍♀️

Well put lemongrove.
The hype is out of control and the media is to blame.

B9exchange
re France. I renovated the bathroom a couple of years ago, out went the bidet and in came the double sinks. Moreover, the new loo cannot cope with 3ply loo paper.

Going shopping tomorrow morning in our local HyperU in France. Will be interesting to see if anything seems different, re WC paper, hand gel and the like.

Juliet27 Sun 08-Mar-20 10:55:19

Kimrus how unfortunate that there in Australia a lorry load of toilet rolls caught fire! and I had to smile at the story that a guy ordered 48 boxes instead of 48 rolls of paper...said it would last him 12 years. Wonder if he’s selling it at a profit. I was also amused that one of your newspapers companies has added pages of plain sheets of perforated paper to their newspaper. You’re certainly keeping clean ‘down under’!

Alioop Sun 08-Mar-20 10:56:02

At the min here in N.Ireland we have 9 cases, yet go into shops & the shelves are wiped out of loo roll, hand wash etc. The guy at the till said it has all gone totally nuts! Also heard in local Tesco a guy went in with a trolley& swiped the length of the shelf of hand wash into it. Idiot!! Think of others who need it in their normal weekly shop.

Mamie Sun 08-Mar-20 11:01:59

Our local town here in France has no hand gel. No shortage of loo roll, but shelf empty of pudding rice in one supermarket. Plenty of Basmati though. I wouldn't call it panic buying but people are definitely stocking up, but then there are no internet shopping deliveries.
We have a bidet and would never be without one.

Craftycat Sun 08-Mar-20 11:09:16

Maybe I'm missing something but why will we need masses of loo roll because there is a slight risk of catching this virus?
Hand sanitiser going quickly I can understand ( I had 2 bottles in the house before all this anyway) but loo rolls & pasta??!!
Are we all going potty or are we being manipulated by stores via media to buy more 'stuff'?

Mamie Sun 08-Mar-20 11:11:50

The only reason I can think of is if you have to self-isolate and might be in danger of running out. We have stocked up on a bit of extra food (and wine) for that reason.

grandtanteJE65 Sun 08-Mar-20 11:12:43

You pour water from the jug, which you hold in your right hand onto your left hand and wash your bottom with it.

This is why it is extremely rude to use your left hand when eating in India, Pakistan, the middle East and most of Africa.

If you are afraid of a shortage of bread, buy dried yeast or fresh yeast and flour. It is easy to bake bread and it tastes so much better than the shop bought bread and is cheaper too.

I've cut all my soaps in half to make them go further.

ananimous Sun 08-Mar-20 11:21:17

It's hard work sawing through my toilet roll supply.

blueskies Sun 08-Mar-20 11:40:19

Ramblingrose22 spot on and I would add the Metro to that list too.

allule Sun 08-Mar-20 11:41:17

I wonder if some retailers are encouraging this to run down the supplies they stocked up in case of a no deal Brexit?
