What are you doing to boost your natural immunity?

This is for people who, generally, think themselves fit and healthy. Which supplements do you use? Are there certain foods you find helpful? Do you have age-old family remedies that you still use? Do any of you eat fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir or kombucha and how effective are they for you? How about essential oils, do these work for you?

This is not a competition but I can match Monica but MOSTLY by 'I just live for each day'. Perfect. I have experience of an adonis type gentleman disappearing in an instant. Enjoy whatever you can whenever you can.

Bit D all year round, not just winter months.wont do any harm and Def. Will be beneficial. We get very little D from sunshine in UK so to think we do t need it in summer is a falsehood. Immunity is bettered by good circulation of beneficial things like BLOOD! ? there's a lot of bunkum out there about how we can physically alter our body chemistry and the like with 'supplements' ! I think the only benefit of 99% of these snake oil products is to the seller! Keeping active eat varied diet (we are omnivores) and cut smoking /the bad stuff out. Drink ok in moderation 1-2 glasses/week maybe. Otherwise I don't fall under the Influence of 'influencers' !!

Calcium with VitD&K, recommended by consultant years ago.
Having osteoporosis I was also told not to have skimmed milk always blue top.
Osteoporosis under control and walking 6 miles 5x a week pain free.

The Mediterranean diet is just that- a form of diet. To have been born and bred in med region carries generations of well-being or otherwise, I don't hold with the theory that we can buy ourselves out of bad health by suddenly eating brightly coloured /raw foods etc. I've eaten what is probably considered a continental style diet since 20 when I got Wed ,and was taught how to cook etc by my MiL who was German. Lots of what my own Ma used to call "funny food" ! Or "foreign stuff" she liked it too because it was 99% home made from scratch. I cannot get my head around some of the utter junk we have on offer in UK still.

I make my own kefir, kombucha and live yogurt all very easy to do. Also take good multi vit and iron, sometimes top up with extra B12, VitD, zinc and magnesium. Try and walk everyday day to get 8.000 steps bur don't always achieve this.

TwinLolly Mon 04-Oct-21 12:44:49

Vitamins D and C, zinc and Omega 3. Also a probiotic thrown in for good measure.

Alioop Mon 04-Oct-21 12:48:54

Cod liver oil and VitD, plus I walk a lot with my dog for exercise. I drink loads of water through the day and green tea.

hicaz46 Mon 04-Oct-21 13:29:56

Vitamin D and turmeric.

Vitamin D, C, B12 and a probiotic tablet daily - all added to banana/spinach/ protein powder/almond milk smoothie that I make daily for breakfast - a routine I have been following for the past 8 years or more. I’m not an anti vaxxer so all my shots are up to date - shingles, Covid, flu etc. I believe in the value of cooking nutritious meals and eating lots of fresh veggies with our evening meal - always served with a protein of meat or fish. I have an allotment so grow many of the veggies we eat. All this effort is worth it because at 79 I still play tennis twice a week, take 2 yoga classes weekly and am a regular at the local gym for spinning sessions. I’m still using HRT patches .....the only medication I take.....and - I believe - it’s the last piece of the puzzle that keeps me relatively pain free and enjoying an energized lifestyle at my stage in life.

Be active with walking and my little bottle of Actimel every morning keeps me just fine. Also lots of fresh air. Good luck everyone

grandtanteJE65 Mon 04-Oct-21 14:30:10

No, we don't use any of all this, but we eat a sensible and very varied diet, take daily excercise either walking or cycling, and try to stay mentally active as well.

I was taking Vitamins and extra D it still got me. Although I don't seem to be as sick as some others but I'm only day 3 today. I am classed as obese though as I'm at least 3 stone overweight.

Janet5116 Mon 04-Oct-21 15:10:30

Hi the best thing to do is to eat fresh vegetables and fruit with line caught fish and grass fed meat (if you are an omnivore). Avoid most things in packets and fruit juices which raise your blood glucose. Our immune systems cannot be boosted as such. Just eat and drink as well as you can.

MayBee70 Mon 04-Oct-21 15:16:44

It’s sometimes not easy to buy fresh vegetables on a regular basis, especially if, like me, you’re trying to avoid going to shops. And to get the sort of balanced diet necessary can work out very expensive when you’re living on a pension!

Callistemon Mon 04-Oct-21 15:28:26

I have read that frozen vegetables could be higher in vitamins and nutrients, Maybee70 because 'fresh' vegetables could be older and lose Vitamin C in particular.

^My arthritis has flared up really badly so I throw every anti inflammatory I can into the blender!^
What natural anti-inflammatory would you recommend, Maybee70?

We will start taking Vit D again now but tend not to take it every day.

Curcuma as an anti-inflammatory for joints
Do you find it helps, Kali2?

I'm sure some foods make it flare up but can't work out which, wondered if it could be tomatoes.

I’ve found the list I made from the video I saw. Papaya, biotin, devils claw ( I must get some of that), broccoli, kale, ginger, pineapple, nuts, turmeric, blueberries and cherries. Cherries are good for bronchial health, too.

Callistemon Mon 04-Oct-21 15:35:47

Thank you for that MayBee

I've just realised that curcuma is turmeric (I think)

(continued!) range, which was rare. Also GOPO for arthrii

Smurf52 Mon 04-Oct-21 15:46:49

Vitamin D because we don’t get enough sun in this country. I have also taken various types of cod liver/fish oil, glucosamine, chondroitin supplements for the last 20 years because my joints were starting to hurt and stiffen up. Now (touch wood) I don’t get joint pain or stiffness any more at 69.

Recovering from a broken ankle I’m not varying my diet much with fresh foods etc so I’m currently taking a multivitamin/mineral supplement. Due to my broken bones I hope to have a DEXA scan for bone density soon and if need be I’ll add calcium supplements.

Juicywords Mon 04-Oct-21 15:52:29

Internet playing up today?. Have taken 50mcg (2000 iu) for years. Dr John Campbell also recommends it. A consultant I saw recently said my levels were normal, but most people were deficient.

Juicywords Mon 04-Oct-21 15:54:43

Also GOPO for arthritis (not immunity)
