So pleased to hear you are home labradorlinda and from now on you can only get better at your own pace. You have had major surgery and it takes 3 months before you feel yourself again. If you feel like a nap at odd hours, feel free as there are no written rules.

Is DH the chief cook and bottle washer? You have my sympathies if he is not au fait with the kitchen.

Look after yourself, the worst is now over and you can only get better.

We had haddock with pesto, sweet potato and celeriac mash and broccoli for dinner and it was lovely. I had a child's size portion and really enjoyed it.
This is the first time he has cooked something like that .. I won't starve . We've just done our Tesco online order , delivering tomorrow so we'll be well stocked up..
Think it's an early night for me... night night...

labradorlinda you certainly will not starve. What a lovely meal.
I hope you slept reasonably well last night and were able to get through a day at home. As said before, you can only get better.

Hello everyone, hope you're enjoying the weekend.
I had a bad night in bed last night with low back pain/sciatica. All I wanted to do was turn over onto my side but I can't.
Have felt stiff and sore today but mixing walking and resting..
Taking my meds regularly and using the ice pack . I am thinking of trying to sleep on the recliner as it seems to help with the pain.
Sorry to sound whiney but has anyone got any tips or advice?

Could you "recline" in bed with extra cushions/pillows behind you but make sure you have at least one pillow between your legs to remind you that you should not turn on your side?

If your recliner is like mine your feet are not even the same height as the rest of your body and may feel uncomfortable after a while. If you do try it you should also put a pillow between your legs to remind you not to turn over.

I slept better in my recliner. It's worth a try if it means you manage a decent amount of sleep.

I did notice my heels felt sore as though they were going to blister so I'll wear socks tonight.

See if you can put something under your heels (rolled towels?) to lift them up from the bedding. I had the start of sore heels too because of sleeping on my back, which was one of the worst things to deal with from my point of view. Once you have bed sores it’s hard to deal with them.

I doubt if socks will do the trick because it is still friction on your heels.

I am well aware it is a no-no but I would fit a slim pillow under my legs so my feet are marginally dangling but still comfortable. This is difficult because of the length of time you will need to do it, weeks as opposed to days.

Dangling off the end of the recliner might help? When I was in hospital I was given a light inflatable sort of sock thing for my foot and ankle to relieve the pressure. Anything like that on Amazon?

I have looked on Amazon and there are a few which fit the bill, around £20. If you could find something which elevates the foot and there is not even sheepskin touching it may be a better option.

Last time I was in hospital there were no inflatables available. A nurse filled a rubber glove with warm water and tied it off securely. It fitted under my heel and felt like jelly. Worked very well.

I looked on ebay and for half the price there are items which would raise the heel off the recliner/bed. Definitely worth looking at Amazon and ebay.

It was 7 months this week when I had my operation, and your first week Labrador linda.
Hope the heel isn’t giving you trouble and you are slowly starting to feel better. After 10 days I remember my first walk. It was great to be outside in the fresh air.

Hello everyone, thank you for your support and advice yet again.
It's a week since surgery and there have certainly been highs and lows.
I am settling into sleeping on the recliner. It seems to help with the sciatica which has raised it's painful head!!!..
We're getting into some sort of routine and my OH, although he's struggling with his back, is looking after me well.
I can now walk properly with 2 sticks... striding out and it seems to be less painful walking this way.
I rested my heels on a sheepskin over night and that was much more comfortable.
It's a dreadful day here weatherwise.. I think a little nap might be on the agenda later and, dare I say it, a glass of wine later

Onwards and upwards labradorlinda. Have a nap whenever you can. It's horrible weather here too. I'm enjoying a quiet afternoon in with lights on as it's so dark. I've even gone mad and put the fire on! Such extravagance!

Hello everyone. I have been reading through these threads about hip replacements and very interesting they are and helpful. Silverlining et al.
I am to have a hip replacement, no date yet. It will be in private hospital, under the NHS.Knee will need doing at some point too. Am in a lot of discomfort, so good to read about you all post-op.
Would like to find if anyone is in the same position as me though. Hip and knee.
Could have gone for knee then hip, but surgeon decided hip first as more straightforward for recovery.
Should I start a new thread for this?

susytish I personally think you will have more continuity if you do not open another thread because I have a feeling it will be the same old soldiers who will join you. We have stuck together for a few months now and there are some decent snippets of information on this thread.

I have had both knees replaced and I now need my r) hip replaced as I cannot lie on that side in bed but I am trying to ignore it.

I've had both knees done and one hip. The knees went before the hip.

Hip certainly is a more straightforward recovery.

susytish you may be pleasantly surprised when you have your hip surgery: My surgeon told me at my initial consultation that often, knee pain is referred pain from the hip. I certainly had considerable pain in both. Because hip surgery is so successful, that is usually the first priority. I've had no pain in my knee whatsoever since I received my magical new hip joint!

Welcome susytish. Would agree that hip before knee is best because of quicker recovery. We are all at various stages of pre and post op so plenty of experience to call on. I had my op in a private hospital on the NHS too. I still had to wait but had it done about 16 weeks after my first appointment. It really is a very successful procedure as can be seen from all the posts here.
As an afterthought I was given a raised toilet seat and two sticks so might be an idea to have a think what else you might need so its in place prior to your operation.
Theres lots of info on here, as well as on part 1 of the thread which I started in Feb this year. I was in exactly the same position as you are now and we will soon be on part 3 so a real mine of information and support.

PS susytish Do get yourself a couple of long handled shoe horns ( try Ikea £1) I am still using mine 7 months later. Really useful as backscratchers too
