Bed Cushions

Every design programme, every bed showroom, every hotel room has beds piled high with an assortment of cushions. Looks lovely. However they all have to be removed in order to get into bed, the most obvious place being onto the floor. Am I missing something here, or have we (nearly) all been brainwashed into buying cushions which serve no purpose except to chuck on the floor?

Bagatelle Tue 17-Jan-17 11:40:40

It's called marketing. We are told that this is what we want so we buy it. Like you must have the up-to-date mobile, or go abroad on holiday.

Yes, it's brainwashing. Stand against it!

starlily106 Tue 17-Jan-17 11:46:15

No chance of me using cushions on my bed. No money to buy them! Just as well, because I wouldn't buy them anyway, I like my bed plain and simple.

I too thought bed cushions pointless but I may succumb as I am going to decorate my bedroom which will be light coloured but with a fuschia blind (bright pink), my Christmas Present from DD. As my bedding is mostly white I have to have a cream/grey throw over the bed during the day (cat that sleeps on my bed) so a splash of colour would be nice. I live in a Park Home & when you come in through my front door my bedroom is on the right (no door just "string" curtain) so is on view.grin

My DH could never see the reason for cushions anywhere & would moan complain about the ones on the sofa until I explained to him that womens spines are different to mens & we need the support hmm He changed his mind when he started having back problems, finding the most comfortable for support grin

I have a throw on my sofa for cat as he jumps on there when he comes in from outside (can't train him to wipe his paws) & sleeps on there at night.

Don't like to see piles of cushions on beds thoughconfused

LadyGracie Tue 17-Jan-17 11:53:44

I would have no were to put them at night, my D'S has them, beds full, no I don't like them!

TillyWhiz Tue 17-Jan-17 11:57:52

I hate to find them in hotel rooms - they are the first thing to be removed. How many bodies have been lying against them and there is a big doubt as to whether they are cleaned/washed when the bedlinen is changed.

Florentine Tue 17-Jan-17 12:11:21

well, what do we expect? I notice that there is no end to what we get completely brainwashed into believing desirable, even necessary. Cushions on the bed are a case in point. Maybe they look 'pretty', in a fluffy kind of way, but they are impractical and a nuisance. Also, aren't we supposed to have bought into sleek, simple design and decor? I find them a complete pain in the neck, and so I refuse to bow to pressure. We should, however, admire the clever ploy of making people feel they want something that, actually, someone else decides is good for us to buy, but is actually only good for their tills/financial results/pockets!

David1968 Tue 17-Jan-17 12:33:53

No cushions in the bedrooms other than on chairs. Plenty of pillows though, and they all get used. (Every time we go to a rented holiday house, we end up piling all the ruddy fancy "bedroom" cushions into a corner.)

grandMattie Tue 17-Jan-17 12:43:38

So glad that the consensus is NO!
Personally, I loathe them and don't see the point and agree that it is good marketing and weak-willed consumers grin. No-one visits my bedroom, have made sure there are the colours i like in the bedroom without the need for cushions.
Anyway, I would never dream of buying any, and can't be a..ed to make any.
I have cushions on the sofa, but put them on the floor as soon as I sit down... DH and I being very tall, don't need them to reach the back of the seat. grin

Willow500 Tue 17-Jan-17 13:09:01

Oh dear - I have 4 on my bed and agree they're a nuisance as I have to take them off and the top pillows to get into bed however they do stop the cat darting out from under the bed and pouncing on my feet grin All my sofas have cushions as do the spare beds and OH's bed - he too flings them and his top pillows on the floor but does manage to rearrange them next morning when he makes his bed. I cleared out the airing/linen cupboard a few months ago and chucked out loads of old cushion covers, old pads and pillows - then decided the sofa ones needed revamping so bought some more blush sigh

Diddy1 Tue 17-Jan-17 13:12:21

Cushions on the bed, we hate them, BUT we do have two which have always been around, and somehow finish the bed odd, I always put them on the ottoman at the foot of the bed at night, then its easy to put them back in the morning, they are totally useless I have to admit. As far as the runner on beds in Hotels they are just decoration I think, shoes should be taken off and left inside the door, even in Hotel rooms I think.

Larsonsmum Tue 17-Jan-17 13:22:19

About 14 years ago I thought it would be a good business to set up - making cushions, as I was shocked at what stores were charging for 'bits of material with a zip'! I spoke about it many times, but deemed it would be a passing notion, and having huge numbers of cushions would 'die out'. Has it heck! They have become bigger and better and as you point out are not only on sofas and settees now, but are in bedrooms, cars, baby's prams, etc, etc, too! They are a HUGE business now! I missed a trick. BTW, my husband hates cushions, and they go right on the floor as soon as he sits down.

Witzend Tue 17-Jan-17 13:27:07

I haven't! Can't stand the things. More than once have had to chuck them on the floor in hotel rooms. Once put them in the wardrobe, hoping the chambermaid (chamberperson?) would take the hint, but no, they were back on the bed again later.

I think people are brainwashed by property programmes, where they tell you you can't sell a property unless you 'dress' it with cushions, throws, twigs in vases, etc.
Are people really influenced by such superficialities? I suppose some of them must be.

Witzend Tue 17-Jan-17 13:28:23

Can't stand them on beds, is what I meant. Nice squashy ones on sofas, etc., fine.

pollyperkins Tue 17-Jan-17 13:41:43

I also cant stand them on beds, nor can DH, We usually ut them on top of the wardrobe if poss in hotel rooms. I take the point that people use them when watching TV but we almost never do (certainly not at home - no TV in bedroom. ). If we were to, surely pillows are adequate - we prop ourselves up with pillows to drink our morning tea in bed. And pillow cases are much easier to launder than cushion covers. Also we have no pets so that argument doesn't work for us either.

I do like cushions on armchairs and sofas though to put behind my back. Quite uncomfortable without them. They also add to what is a public room (unlike thrbedroom). But DH and DS juts throw them on the floor - very annoying!

If you need a touch of colour or prettiness in the bedroom why not buy a patterned duvet cover and pillow cases?

Alima Tue 17-Jan-17 13:43:18

I am with the "what's the point of extra cushions on the bed" brigade. Waste of space and simply extra crap. Do have squishy cushions on the sofas but they often end up on the floor too. Similar thing, what's with all the candles strewn around now? We rid the world of chip pans and get candles instead. Very odd.

MammaN Tue 17-Jan-17 13:44:38

I haven't been brainwashed. I won't be buying any bed cushions - ever - let alone some time soon to follow fashion. Don't see the point and find them irritating in hotels. I think the bit of material is for decor. They mostly match the curtains and aren't made of material that you would want to be washing frequently because people have put their feet on them. I suspect they're only washed at the same frequency as the curtains.

M0nica Tue 17-Jan-17 14:11:54

Never owned a bed cushion - and I do not know anyone of any age who has them in their house. I thought there use was limited to bed and breakfasts and hotels with pretensions.

entropy Tue 17-Jan-17 14:28:05

Total waste of time, space and money. Cherrytree69, as a 'dedicated follower of fashion' should realise that the main purpose of the Fashion Industry is to empty our bank accounts.

Bluesmum Tue 17-Jan-17 14:33:39

Life used to be too short to stuff mushrooms, now mine is too short to play cushion arranging/re-arranging on a daily, nightly basis!! I hate the way beds are dressed these days! They just look totally unmade jumbles most of the tine! We recently changed to two single, twin beds, and I have been mortified to discover I cannot buy single bedspreads that enable me to cover the bed, down to the floor on both sides and at the bottom, with a nice allowance at the top to make a false pillow type fold! All single bedspreads are now square, so touch the floor both sides but only reach the foot of the bed and the pillows! I recently spoke to the manager of a bedding department in our local large store, who confirmed this! I would love to know who decides we need to changes like this!

Bagatelle Tue 17-Jan-17 14:35:31

Yes, entropy, the main purpose of the Fashion Industry is to empty our bank accounts. However, a 'dedicated follower of fashion' is unlikely to notice that!

I wonder how many jobs depend on the cushion-manufacturing industry?

Ruthyo Tue 17-Jan-17 14:44:17

We are selling our house so every morning the bed is neatly made with the cushions nicely arranged in case of a last minute viewing!

VIOLETTE Tue 17-Jan-17 14:52:04

I love them .....each to his/her own ! I have five on the bed to match everything else in the room ..curtains, duvet cover, etc AND I also have the folded throw at the end of the bed to be pulled up over the bed when the cat decides to stay on the bed overnight ! Other half hates them with a vengeance ...and throws them everywhere, so much so that it is difficult to climb over them on the floor to get to my side ! The two spare beds also have cushions .....the cat has cushions the chairs have cushions .......anyone coming to my house can have a cushion over their head so they won't see them if it upsets them !!!!wink

NanaandGrampy Tue 17-Jan-17 15:06:59

I love them too.

Yes they can be a nuisance. Yes I throw them on the armchair at night sometimes .

BUT I love the look of them, they're cheap to change , and I think the aesthetics are as important as the use.

Niobe Tue 17-Jan-17 15:16:16

I love the look of them but don't have any at the moment as I don't have a chair in the bedroom. When I find a chair that I like I will get some cushions . That way they can be put on the chair at night, the idea of putting them on the floor does not appeal to me.

Grannylu Tue 17-Jan-17 16:27:01

Such a silly fashion! You can't get into bed without removing all those pointless cushions, and where do you put them? On the floor? That's one daft fashion I certainly shan't be falling for.
