Bed Cushions

Every design programme, every bed showroom, every hotel room has beds piled high with an assortment of cushions. Looks lovely. However they all have to be removed in order to get into bed, the most obvious place being onto the floor. Am I missing something here, or have we (nearly) all been brainwashed into buying cushions which serve no purpose except to chuck on the floor?

This is fascinating! I love the look of the artfully placed cushions and pillows on beds but am completely unable to arrange them at home so that they look like they do in magazines or in hotels. That doesn't stop me making more and trying to achieve 'the look'. My husband, like others have written, finds them pointless and flings them all on the floor every night. If he makes the bed he picks them up in the morning but plonks them anywhere ?

Love my cushions and various throws on the sofas downstairs, as do the grandchildren who love chucking playing with them on on the floor!
But on the bed, I just can't be bothered with them. I use a triangular pillow, known as "a poorly pillow" in our family, to sit up and read in bed, it fits neatly by the side of the bed when I snuggle down to sleep.

Unless you are in the habit of throwing open your bedroom to passing strangers in the hope that they might be journalists on the lookout for a random subject for a home interiors article, or you insist on dragging every visitor to your home upstairs to admire your artfully arranged cushions on your bed, what the hell is the bloody point?

If the only people seeing your bedroom is you and your husband/partner/significant other/dog/cat (delete where not applicable) then why spend time (and money buying the damn things) arranging cushions on the bed every morning, only to toss them off (!) on to the floor when you go to bed?

Do you fold the end of your toilet roll into a point as well?

kittylester Tue 17-Jan-17 07:30:31

Don't do the toilet roll thing phoenix but I love the look of the cushions on our bed - in my opinion it makes it look really inviting.

marionk Tue 17-Jan-17 10:03:33

Hate them. Just get in the way

JessM Tue 17-Jan-17 10:07:33

I haven't . I'm as likely to buy a bed cushion as I am to buy a nuclear warhead.

BRedhead59 Tue 17-Jan-17 10:16:03

Cushions on chairs not beds - Colourful quilt covers and pillow cases get my vote

Blinko Tue 17-Jan-17 10:17:18

DS1 to DS2 'What is it with women and cushions?' hmm

radicalnan Tue 17-Jan-17 10:21:47

There is no point to them at all, I have loads but they are pointless........most men know that, but because men are rarely right IMHO we carry on the national cushion fetish.

loopylou Tue 17-Jan-17 10:22:56

I totally agree phoenix! Pointless frippery imo and I find them very irritating in hotel rooms I just lob them across the room ?

HootyMcOwlface Tue 17-Jan-17 10:23:20

Haha phoenix I could have written that! I don't get the point of them, nor the runner - what the heck is that for?

Diggingdoris Tue 17-Jan-17 10:24:23

I have just three pretty ones in the centre of headboard and use them when I go for an afternoon nap/book read or like right now when I'm on the bed doing leg exercises(afterTKR) whilst catching up on messages on my tablet. They go on armchair at night.

Lupin Tue 17-Jan-17 10:24:57

Stylistically they can look lovely - but they are a wretched nuisance in reality. It's a minimalist bed for me...but I like bedspreads over the duvet...a quilty as possible.

Lilyflower Tue 17-Jan-17 10:29:30

I have a couple of bed cushions on the spare bed. Mine is cushion free but I do iron the duvet cover and the pillowslips and we turn the top ones over before we sleep so they stay looking nice. Also. I have a satin turned over bedcover on the foot of the bed to look lovely. I like to live like the Dowager Duchess of Downton even though I have to be my own phalanx of servants!

An additional point:- I love that the Gransnet posters know the difference between cushions and pillows as so many young people don't and call cushions pillows. Almost as bad is the way that bathroom basins are referred to as sinks by many younger folks.

CaliBoingo Tue 17-Jan-17 10:31:17

Honestly, I don't even know what to do with cushions on my sofa, let alone my bed. When company comes, the cushions all end up on the floor. Not a great look.

I'll tell ya what I do require, though - loads of bed pillows on the bed. They're a must for when we sit up reading or watching TV. The wall behind is artexed (Arrghh! Hate it!) so we need the extra padding lest we slice our scalps.

titleyann Tue 17-Jan-17 10:33:04

I have two huge cushions on my bed. Love them because they are great for cuddling into when watching tv in bed or reading. Great for propping up my grandaughter too. However when you put dozens on the bed it is a bit pointless. oh I also have a cushion on the chair, a small one with the first line of a poem. First thing I see in the morning and cheers me up.

dirgni Tue 17-Jan-17 10:35:15

I was watching a design program on to and the designer said "Matching bed cushions and curtains very 80's!!

dirgni Tue 17-Jan-17 10:35:54

Sorry was watching on TV!

cloverpark Tue 17-Jan-17 10:53:35

We don't see the point of cushions on beds either - we always take them off in hotels and put elsewhere. Certainly don't have them on our bed at home.

greatgranny Tue 17-Jan-17 10:55:43

I personally don't like stacks of cushions on a bed, and men seem to loathe them. Even on sofas most people push them aside to get comfy. A couple are fine, with perhaps a cosy throw as well.

Cagsy Tue 17-Jan-17 11:15:21

Well I love them, although hotels can go over the top, I think they bring a touch of luxury and comfort. I just put them on the armchair overnight and back on the bed when I make it. Got loads on the sofas in the lounge too, and the kitchen - makes the place look more cosy and inviting i think smile

Marion58 Tue 17-Jan-17 11:15:26

Sprite 66 - they are awful! The odd one may be but ok it seems to be a case of who can upstage the other with the amount. To be honest I like individuality and too many homes these days look like they have all been kitted out from the same shops! Can't stand those signs everyone has either saying 'home' 'love' etc etc. Oh and whilst we are on the subject those humungous clocks! Are we all blind?

GrammaH Tue 17-Jan-17 11:28:27

No!

Theoddbird Tue 17-Jan-17 11:31:19

Love mine smile

callgirl1 Tue 17-Jan-17 11:36:47

I`m with you Phoenix, the only ones who see my bedroom are me and the window cleaner! What`s the point of the extra work involved arranging damned cushions?
Oh, and Lilyflower, I call our bathroom sink the bathroom sink, to me a basin is a bowl!
