Black flooring for kitchen?

Hello all, and sending good wishes.

Now, if you had a kitchen that measured approximately 12m sq, and had light beech cupboards, sort of black granite type speckled worktops, tiles that are black, cream and light coffee, floor currently light beech (but not the same colour as the cupboards) and needs replacing, what colour floor would you go for?

It's a kitchen dining room, the (cat proof!) dining chairs are black with chrome legs, most of the kitchen bits are either black or chrome/silver.

I have lived with the current floor since we bought the house in 2005, and the floor does need replacing.

Have looked at various "wood" (i.e.laminate/vinyl) options, but just wondered if black might be a good, possibly even "stylish" option!

Your opinions are welcomed!!

Having twice lived with a black vinyl floor in the bathroom, I can safely say that I'd never put down black flooring anywhere, especially a kitchen. Life's too short for washing floors that often!

My daughter has a black tiled kitchen floor.
When wet it looks lovely but is an ice rink.
When dry it is a magnet for every bit of dust and dirt from miles around!
I have an Indian slate floor, before committing I purchased a single tile and abused it with all manner of substances, I put hot pans on it and dropped things on it.
It is fantastic, hardwearing, non slip and never looks grubby. ?

I never wash my kitchen floor! Somehow life goes on.

kittylester Thu 13-Sept-18 12:11:28

phoenix, just don't! We had a navy blue floor and even I was moved to sweep it occasionally!

lemongrove Thu 13-Sept-18 12:17:06

The darker, the more things 'show up' as others say.
We have a very pale Karndean in the kitchen [put down in strips like a laminate] a sort of pale driftwood look.Obviously, I do clean it, but it looks clean all the time even before I wash it.It has been down for 10 years and not a mark on it.

Chewbacca Thu 13-Sept-18 16:54:55

Sounds similar to mine lemon. I was so pleased with the end result in the kitchen that I had itextended right through the downstairs floors too. So easy to clean, doesn't show up the muck and forgiving with bumps and scrapes.

Someone I knew had a white tiled kitchen floor. She told me she "just washed it every night - it's no bother"

Life's too short.

I have a marble pattern on porcelain tiles and they hide a multitude of sins as I’m not one for mopping the floor daily. (total slattern)

Joelise Thu 13-Sept-18 19:54:59

Another vote for Karndean here , we have a oak finish on ours , it's so easy to clean and doesn't show the detritus that lands on it .

Again, thanks to all.

We have a pretty tight budget, so Amtico &Karndean are, unfortunately not an option sad

Mr P is against having ordinary vinyl, as we used to have it in the downstairs loo and the dear departed Lily used to claw it!

I have pointed out that we have vinyl in the bathroom that hasn't been "cattacked" but he isn't prepared to risk it in the kitchen, hence looking at what is listed as LVT, the samples we have received so far have been very impressive, thick, solid, tough finish and click together like laminate, but as we don't intend to do it again, it's important to get it right!

We used to have black tile effect vinyl in a kitchen with darkish oak units and a black worktop - we have cats and the litter tray was on it - I did have to sweep it every day but didn't need to wash it often. We have cream shiny tiles in the kitchen/utility/downstairs loo and they're a nightmare - not only do they show every splash of water and cat hairs they also show marks just walking on them in bare feet!! Washing them makes slippers stick as you walk angry We have wood effect vinyl in the conservatory (another litter tray zone) and that always looks lovely and is so easy to clean.

lemongrove Thu 13-Sept-18 21:38:23

yes, there are some very nice wood effect vinyls around.

Chewbacca Thu 13-Sept-18 21:48:35

Just read back on my earlier post about Karndean and it is not a fiddle to clean at all! It's a DODDLE to clean! why does spell check insist it knows best

lemongrove Thu 13-Sept-18 21:52:56

Chewbacca it was your bookmarks that had me puzzled! grin

Chewbacca Thu 13-Sept-18 22:08:50

Eater stains instead of water stains. Bookmarks instead of foot marks. Fiddle instead of doddle.

I don't know why I bother lemon! I'm thinking straight but by the time the words come out of the ends of my fingers, it's gibberish. I'm having similar problems verbally too! grin

phoenix Thu 13-Sept-18 22:10:22

I interpreted it as "boot marks"?

Chewbacca Thu 13-Sept-18 22:13:22

Books. Foot. Boots. Who knows Phoenix? All I know is that somebody keeps stomping across my lovely new floor and leaves ruddy big marks! And it can't be me because I only take a size 4 shoe!

lemongrove Thu 13-Sept-18 22:14:52

Similar problems verbally Chewy ah! that will be the poteen catching up with you.

phoenix Thu 13-Sept-18 22:16:10

Going back to the topic, sort of, I wish I could persuade Mr P to consider ordinary vinyl flooring, I'm pretty sure that the current incumbent mogs wouldn't scratch it, but he is not prepared to risk it sad

I feel that we could probably find one that was a similar pattern/effect to the worktops, so might look quite good, a sort of "sandwich" as in worktop, light coloured cupboards, then same sort of floor as worktops.

Flossieturner Thu 13-Sept-18 22:19:57

I really like black tiled floors. The house I have seen with them always, seem stylish.

Chewbacca Thu 13-Sept-18 22:21:08

That would look good Phoenix. I have this on the floor:- internetflooringsupplies.co.uk/karndean-knight-tile-lime-washed-oak-kp99.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwlejcBRAdEiwAAbj6KWpHIRcNa6XvxkpM0vB4DtHopBPECHjJz8bFIxpH_f1Qe2JhkIAouxoC9DsQAvD_BwE

And the countertops are like a wooden butcher's block. Cupboards are cream, tiles neutral, like yours. Could you go to a flooring company and get some samples to put down and see what works best in different light? I had several samples down for weeks whilst I decided. Its a big decision to take and, like you said, you want to get it right first time.

mrsmopp Sun 23-Sept-18 10:31:10

The problem with slate or tiles is that if you drop a plate or a dish, it will smash to smithereens. I would bear that in mins as I'm always dropping things. I would go for amtico or karndean. My sister has flotex because it is warm underfoot, it reduces echoing, it's indestructible, and you can scrub it. She had samples to drop on the floor which helped when making the choice.

Whatever flooring you purchase don't buy anything with a shine.
I have engineered wood flooring in both the hall and dinner.
The floor in the hall has a mat finish and is great but the diner floor has a shine and it shows every mark and bit on it.
You could clean the floor every day and within a couple of hour of walking it needs sweeping again.

phoenix Wed 26-Sept-18 16:37:58

Mr P is rather taken with this one:

I have a black slate floor and with a hairy, muddy dog it is a disaster ! Shows every mark and I could be forever cleaning it. I have learnt not to look too often blush
