First time Heating Combi boiler

On a learning mission! We have just had central heating installed for the first time in our lives, only ever had a hot water one before, never radiators etc.
A new Worcester combi boiler put in which I am finding rather noisy. It goes on/off every 15 to 20 mins, on for about 4 mins each time, and when on it has a low humming sound which in my bedroom and the spare bedroom sounds a bit like a distant tumble dryer doing it's thing is the only way I can describe it. I have good hearing so haven't slept much the last two nights, my OH has hearing loss and doesn't notice it. Annoying downstairs when watching tv too.
Do any of you have any experience of such a thing? Everything I see online says they should be just about silent once clicked on. We shall be seeing the fitter in the next day or two but would be good to know what it should be like.
Grateful for any advice.

Your boiler is cycling too often. You need to alter the return temperature. Anyone can do that, mine is now on 58 and was set at 70 by the installer

I have a tank in mine, ariston, which can hold water at a hot temperature for an instant stream of hot water at the tap. I turned that off, also easy to find that push control. My hot water now comes on demand

You also need to take air out of this new system from time to time, it is called bleeding and is easily done with the small key, holding a flannel underneath. You can hear air hissing out and then the liquid comes, when you need to tighten that valve again. They are at the top side of the radiators

The master rad will usually be in the bathroom or en suite and that is what I bleed first

We have a Worcester combi boiler. It has an ECO feature which makes the boiler turn on quite regularly so your water would be hotter more quickly, when you turn on the tap.
Look at your instructions manual and turn this feature off, see if this makes it quieter.

Thank you for replies.
The fitter bled the system twice on Saturday when he was here.
We turned off the Eco feature but it still comes on every quarter of an hour or so.

I have a combi boiler in my 5 year old new build.

It is situated in the utility room so I do not hear it at all. It does not go on and off every few minutes - it only comes on when I turn a tap/shower on. If I turn up the thre3mostat for the central heating it is on a lot more, but I do not hear it at all. I hear the pump that circulates the water to the radiators - is this what you are hearing?

I would go back to the installers and ask them to talk you through what is happening, what the principles of the combi boiler are, and what your settings should be for max efficiency and min noise.

I had a combi boiler fitted over a year ago. It is fitted in my airing cupboard and I never hear it.

You shouldn't be having this issue. Go back to the fitter- you should have a guarantee if it has recently been installed.

I had my combi-boiler replaced three years ago and it is guaranteed for twelve years. I was told Worcester boilers are not what they used to be and my fitter won't install them anymore.

I hope you get this sorted soon.

When the heating is off my boiler only comes on if run the hot tap. Hot water on demand.

Obviously when the central heating is on the boiler comes on whenever the main thermostat (in the hall) registers a drop in temperature.

I haven’t got my heating on yet, have you?

In both cases I only hear the boiler I’m standing right next to it and my bedroom is right above.

Yours doesn’t sound right at all.

You shouldn't be able to hear your boiler from another room. It needs adjusting.

This is definitely odd. I have one (though mine is probably an older model) and knowledge of two other Worcester Bosch boilers and they don't do this.

I'd definitely contact your installer for help. Tell him you are unhappy and being woken up by it.
I wonder is your installer Worcester Bosch trained... though presumably a boiler is similar to any other?

I don't mind waiting for water to come through so leave "eco" off.
Have you registered the boiler with Bosch?
Call them maybe - they have an amazing technical team who may know at once what the issue is.

They may even send someone out themselves as it's a new boiler?

Thanks all. This is so helpful, being new to central heating. Nearly 70 and OH nearing 80 and we have never lived with in a house with it. Learning game!

It was installed with the radiators at end of last week so everything is new. The firm our fitter works for uses Worcester boilers, he is calling in today and we are seeing his boss tomorrow. It's just good to hear what it should be like so I know what is right and what's not.
I just messaged my son to see what his older one is like and he said much the same as yourselves. He only hears it in the kitchen and only when he turns tap on, he's new to the house so not really tested the heating bit yet.

How lovely and cosy it will be when it's running well!
😍

henetha Mon 15-Sept-25 11:54:29

My boiler is Worcester Bosch and it's fine . It's about 7 years old now. My gas man looks after it very well for me.
It's on the back wall of the kitchen, so no noises that I'm aware of to keep me awake at night.
I hope you can sort yours out and have a lovely cosy and warm winter with it.

Thank you all

Any joy,jusnoneed?

valdavi Mon 15-Sept-25 21:30:04

It's not an oil-fired boiler is it? In my experience they're a bit noisier than gas, although much quiter than they used to be.

jusnoneed Mon 15-Sept-25 21:44:24

Happy to report the problem appears to of been sorted. Fitter returned this afternoon, managed to hear it when it came on. Baffled at first but between him and his brother, who is an electrician, they got it going with no noise now. Not sure they knew exactly why it was doing it, but so far so good!
Thanks again for all your replies.

Valdavi, no its a gas boiler.

Greyduster Mon 15-Sept-25 21:48:06

Unless you are running the central heating your boiler should only be firing when you call for hot water. You shouldn’t hear it.

NotSpaghetti Mon 15-Sept-25 22:05:51

Please make sure you get the boiler registered at Bosch!

Have a good peaceful night!

Katekeeprunning Tue 16-Sept-25 14:54:08

Enjoy the coziness of your new heat

LizH13 Tue 16-Sept-25 15:44:59

Glad you now have it sorted. Our radiator heating was installed only 2 years ago and apart from being vaguely aware of it at first, we never hear it now. The boiler is in a cupboard off the guest bedroom and my daughter was amazed when they stayed over as she (fortunately) never heard it.
Enjoy your warm winter, I’m so glad we’ve got ours.

Worcester Bosch have a poor reputation compared to other providers like Vaillant. We've just replaced our still-working 19 year-old Vaillant with an updated version for fear that we won't be able to get one soon if Ed Miliband gets his way (He still uses a gas combi-boiler in his constituency home - more Labout hypocrisy

NotSpaghetti Tue 16-Sept-25 17:50:31

orly - bug why would HD remove a working boiler?
That makes no ecological sense at all.

NotSpaghetti Tue 16-Sept-25 18:13:19

Worcester Bosch have a poor reputation compared to other providers like Vaillant.

I don't think this is true, Orly. At least I haven't heard this.
I know they are a lot cheaper than Vaillant but my German friend who is "Gas Safe" registered (or whatever it is if it has changed subsequently) fitted a Worcester Bosch in his own house (and ours).

He is not at all a cheapskate and has an engineering doctorate!

Maybe the newer ones are different?
I'll ask him if I see him soonish.
I'd be interested to know where you got your reputation info from though as one of my daughters will be needing a boiler in the next couple of years.

I would add that probably any boiler is a delight after not having Central Heating!
