Decent pension for all pensioners.

Instead of some pensioners getting excessive amounts and some getting very little why not use the money in the pension funds to give all pensioners a decent pension.

Err.....you sure about this? If I've earned a decent amount, put a fair part of this aside for a pension but am then expected to share it with others who have not? Not sure you will sell that idea to many. It may be highly commendable but methinks many would baulk at it.

But that would take away what little incentive there still is to save! Why would anyone put their hard earned cash into a pension knowing that they had to give some of it away?

I think Bentley is just teasing Frank, as he has done before. Let us wait for the response! It is strange that their posting style is similar! wink

I am in total agreement with HildaW. I worked very hard for my reasonable pension whereas I know many who did not bother. I am sorry but what is mine is mine.

Ha ha ha bentley49 ! grin

Just wit until Frank hears about this idea. The thought of him giving away a penny of his well earned "London Pension" will be too much for him to bear!

HildaW Wed 15-May-13 14:32:21

OOOOer shysal, you suspect a...................da....da...daaaaa..........a plot?????

HildaW Wed 15-May-13 14:33:48

Perhaps there should be an emoticom [wooden spoon]!

Gerry's idea is absolutely ridiculous.
I contributed to my pension scheme to get a good pension for myself and my late wife did but sadly she is not around to enjoy it but I am sure she will want me to have some of it along with my daughter's and granddaughters.
It sounds as if Gerry is like some of the people who I worked with who did not contribute anything to a pension scheme and they are now annoyed that I am better off than them.
I can only agree with what the other posters have said in this thread.
Gerry and some other people should be thanking me for all of the tax I am now paying which amounts to more than the state pension and I will be paying more when I get to state pension age.

Good heavens, are you not 65 yet, Frank? I thought you were older.

HUNTERF Wed 15-May-13 19:51:01

Ariadne

I thought you were 95.

Frank, I cannot believe that I am agreeing with you, that really is a first.

What I object to is a pensioner I know runs a new Jaguar and lives in a very large house worth about £1,000,000 on his own which he inherited from hs parents.
Surely some of his money should be used to give pensioners who have got virtually nothing a decent living standard.

Gerry surely the answer would be for the basic state pension to be enough to give every pensioner a decent standard of living

janerowena Fri 17-May-13 16:03:07

Why on earth should he do that? If he chooses to give some money charitably, that's up to him. It's his money to do with as he wishes. Life is very unfair. But maybe when he dies his estate will pass to some extremely impoverished relatives of pensionable age in desperate need of his money.

Are you thinking that pensioners who have an income above a certain level shouldn't have a government pension? I think I would agree with that, but I do know a wealthy couple who donate theirs to charity. They spend ages deciding which charity should benefit each year, and they can't be alone in doing that.

I think the state pension should only provide a very basic standard of living, essential food and very basic accommodation.
If a person has not paid in to a pension scheme to provide for him / herself I should not be expected to provide any more as a tax payer.

If a person has paid to have a state pension they should get it regardless of what assets they have.
Often they have paid the highest taxes and national insurance contributions.

Frank we have had this discussion before and, as has been pointed out to you a number of times, some people were not in a position to pay into a pension scheme. Not everyone was fortunate enough to have the education to get a well paid job, or to have good health which enabled them to work and save for old age, or simply took low paid jobs which need to be done but which many of us won't do ourselves.

Your theory only caters for the strong in our society - who takes care of the weak?

I think the big wooden spoon is out again. Wind up time.

Agree!
