Carrying Cash or just Bank card

Heard on TV that people more and more are not carrying cash at all and paying for goods and services via card.
What do GNs feel about having cash or now don't? I have small coin purse which I use for the hair salon tip but apart from this, I don't tend to use cash. Do GNs feel safer out in public without cash?

Esspee, yes, for exactly that reason. Besides which if you don’t use your PIN you forget it.

"The Bank of England has announced that the old notes will go out of circulation on 30 September 2022. This mean you will not be able to use the notes in shops, but you will be able to exchange them for new notes. Some banks and the Post Office may also accept them if you wish to deposit them into your bank account." News

I like to carry both. My local chippy only accepts cash, my window cleaner wants cash, and if I go in a charity shop for a couple of books they usually have a £5 limit for card payments.

I have both but tend to use cards wherever I can. One of my local shops and my hairdresser prefer cash as they are charged for card transactions and they try to keep their prices low.

I've not carried cash for years! Always keep bank card in phone case and phone in jeans front pocket-good luck to anyone trying to get at it there! I can just about get it out meself! Safe as-well safe as me tight jeans!

Think I've had the same two fivers in my wallet for well over a year now

Me too. I call them my 'lucky fivers' and joke that I'm saving them for when they're worth £20!!!

Some car parks only take cash.

Don't they just! And always an odd amount, with no change given either in some. I went to one befor lockdown that charged 60p(!) For first hour, then £1.30(!) For2+ then £5.20 (!)all day.......no change so call it £1/£2/£6 why -don't -they?! Theft by stealth.......

I always have cash and still pay for a lot of things with cash. I don't like how things are going, it's like we are being told how to run our finances. I know a lot of us elders feel safer using a card and that's good. I still go into the BS every week to draw out how much cash I need, that's what I like to do at the moment.

Always ask for the contactless feature to be removed when card is being replaced. Don't trust them (or me!). Always keep two cards active in case one bounces. Has happened, albeit mechanical error. Never close to my limit. Never tip a hairdresser. They set the price. I pay up in full without question. Spent all my working life in the financial arena. Enlightening indeed.

No cash here.

You can still use the old £20 until September 2022

My DD has visited us and over three days we needed five car parks. Only one took cards. We ran out of the right money and ended up spending more as Gabrielle56 said.
We have a local ‘general’ shop and they won’t take card payments under £5.

Our car parks all allow payment by app Ringo or paybyphone so no cash needed

Mollygo Tue 12-Oct-21 08:00:52

Some of our carparks allow payment by Ringo but it adds to the cost so we use cash. Others accept card so we use that and then there’s the cash only ones.

I rarely need to use cash. Use my card 99.99% of the time

I use a card or contactless for nearly everything now. We still pay the window cleaner in cash, though.

During the summer hols when Gdcs were staying, I was surprised to find that even the people who ran the big bouncy castle and other rides in the town centre, accepted contactless. Ditto the man with an old fashioned carousel in the market place - but he did charge less for cash - £2 instead of £3.
