65% rise in energy in October!

I’ve just read the latest prediction from Martin Lewis. He reckons energy bills will rise by a further 65% in October. He was spot on with his April prediction so I expect he’s right with this one too. He knows his stuff!

He says: From Oct, typical energy bills will cost a third of the new state pension, and a bigger proportion of the old one. When will this all endsad.

Yes. My husband has said paying our energy bills will be like taking out a mortgage.

It’s very worrying. I took a screenshot yesterday of Martin Lewis’s ready reckoner for likely future payments. I very much hope he’s wrong but his research is usually detailed and accurate. I’ve attached the screenshot.

Thanks GNW - that’s useful. And, of course, that’s without factoring in the extra energy we’ll be using throughout the winter. I fear that the extra money from the government won’t touch the sides. Of course, the extra winter fuel payment is just a ‘one off’, but I doubt the energy companies will reduce the price when the global energy situation eases. So, we’ll be left with higher prices for the foreseeable future; no further government help; and energy company shareholders once again making enormous profits at our expense!

Is this for gas and electricity combined or just for one of them??

Grannynannywanny Wed 13-Jul-22 00:34:45

That’s based on combined fuel bill per month travelsafar

SunshineSally Wed 13-Jul-22 00:45:06

Jeez we currently pay £154 pm dual fuel and that’s for 2 of us (OVO) and it’s only recently gone up! ?

Katie59 Wed 13-Jul-22 07:09:39

We’ve just signed up a new deal and it is 45% up fixed for year, but no penalty to change, so if it is too much we’re not tied in.

Oldnproud Wed 13-Jul-22 07:35:11

I'm kicking myself. Two weeks ago, I could have got a reasonable fixed deal, both for my mum and for myself, but I thought about it for too long sad

Being able to pay your energy bill shouldn’t be like a game of poker should it.

MerylStreep Wed 13-Jul-22 08:21:55

I heard last night that last month 2 million people defaulted on either mortgage or fuel bills.

Riverwalk Wed 13-Jul-22 08:28:57

I heard that Meryl thought I'd misheard, seems an extraordinarily high number.

I agree Lizzie energy is a basic need - it's not like people have a choice not to have it, like say a very large mortgage or fancy car.

I dread to think how lower paid families will manage come the colder weather.

LizzieDrip Wed 13-Jul-22 09:08:53

Absolutely Riverwalk, people can hardly be accused of extravagance because they heat their homes, cook food and switch lights on. And if I hear any more ‘energy saving tips’ I’ll explode! I’m sure we’re already employing every energy saving tip known to man. Come the winter things are going to get very bad for many people, I’m afraid.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Jul-22 09:15:41

France has nationalised the energy supply. Consequently the price for home energy has risen by 4%

This isn’t some socialist far left government, it is politically centrist.

Chewbacca Wed 13-Jul-22 09:19:09

But what will happen if people just cannot pay? Families with young children who are on low incomes, older people on fixed pensions; they can't be left without heating, so if they just don't have the money there to pay, will all of them have their supply disconnected? I would imagine that millions of people will soon be in fuel poverty.

Katie59 Wed 13-Jul-22 09:21:22

The government will have step in and do more than the have already announced, pensioners dying of hypothermia, or children with malnourishment cannot be allowed. Mortgage holidays will have to be taken, there is no point forcing repossession in a falling market.

It is going to be tough, in Europe it will be much worse because energy rationing is a real prospect, Germany in particular may have to shut down a lot of industry

Chewbacca Wed 13-Jul-22 09:24:01

Can anyone explain to me why the daily standing charge varies so much from area to area? My last month's energy usage was extremely low but the standing charges were more than twice the energy used. Even if I'd never switched a light on, or had a shower, the standing charges meant that my bill was very much higher.

HeavenLeigh Wed 13-Jul-22 09:32:42

Scary

LizzieDrip Wed 13-Jul-22 10:00:35

Chewbacca the energy companies say the standing charge is related to the energy infrastructure in different areasconfused Also, we’re paying to bail out the many energy companies that went bust due to government encouragement of competition and Ofgem’s lack of regulation and due diligence. This increased the standing charge in April. I’m hoping the standing charge won’t go up again in Oct - don’t see why it should??? If it does, I’ll be contacting Ofgem for an explanation. As you say, I’ve ‘spent’ over £1 every day without using anything. If every appliance in the house was switched off, I’d still be charged over £30 per monthangry Of course, energy company shareholders are still receiving their ample dividends. Nationalise!!!

MawtheMerrier Wed 13-Jul-22 10:04:25

We’ll be looking back nostalgically at the current heatwave, and wishing we could have bottled it! ????

MerylStreep Wed 13-Jul-22 10:15:05

Katie59
Russia has shut down Nord Stream 1 pipeline which supplies Europe for maintenance ?
Germany are very worried that it won’t be turned on again, as if the Russians would do that. ?

LizzieDrip Wed 13-Jul-22 10:16:59

That’s the irony, if the government had invested in solar power with storage facilities, we could have ‘bottled it’!

LizzieDrip Wed 13-Jul-22 10:18:00

That’s to MawtheMerrior

MawtheMerrier Wed 13-Jul-22 10:19:41

I know - I have solar panels, but the additional investment in a battery is beyond me and not thought to be cost effective if one is unlikely to stay in the house for years and years

Chewbacca Wed 13-Jul-22 10:22:02

If every appliance in the house was switched off, I’d still be charged over £30 per month

Thanks LizzieDrip; I'm really very worried of what my winter bills will be like; I pared my usage back to the bone last winter - heating on for 1 hour a day - and am absolutely dreading the coming months bills.
